Started skating at 41 as a mum, just after getting PhD - turning 50 next month. Super stoked, it’s the most fun decade of my life. A bit optimistic but want nice kickflip and maybe tre flip next decade 🙂Who knows? Every trick or goal is just ‘something you haven’t got yet’ 🤔💕
Stop treating casuals as juniors. I am 51, have a PhD, was awarded / returned on principle a Medal in the Order of Australia (OAM), have publications, grants, over 20 years of experience leading impactful networks and projects and been a Rockefeller Fellow and Yale SEAS grantee
It’s fun, you always can learn something, landing things feels awesome even if baby progress, so why not skate forever? 🤔🛹💕 some lil vids of skateboarding in my

Just a reminder you can stereotype skateboarders all you want but here’s a MIT Masters in Architecture graduate who qualified for the Olympics at 34, and that’s just some of the accomplishments in the community. Goes well beyond academia over to the arts, film, education & more
Video description: Various skating film clips. Filmed in streets and skateparks.
Also just highlighting a campaign I co-founded
@ConsentIsRadSB
to encourage consent culture and / check out a fundraiser for Vietnam am helping with
Happy skating all ❤️
Super sorry for the cringe rocket grass landing clips but I worked hard for the baby progress lands so this is for anyone else sticking with learn to kick flip hell lol …and I’m 51 middle age lady now so societally invisible right?
I made wise decisions to dedicate time to family and community while engaging in meaningful work inside and outside universities and organizations. I bring valuable expertise, networks, qualifications and skills directed to bring change. See us entirely, not as an admin category
Throwback to when was with family on a drive to a formal event but saw this usually busy carpark spot was quiet and lonely so quick stop to say hello. Happy fun on cute little rail 💃🏻🛹
Skateboarding is beautiful & embracing the life of a skateboarder requires strength, courage, perseverance, creativity, humbleness, belief, skill & sacrifice. The rewards speak to the soul. Ignore those who hate on it. They don’t understand real joy, street skills & character.
Delete most of my skate clips on Insta because the comments and DMs are weird, mean and I really just want diversity to be seen, and meet cool people. It’s also not easy to find 50 year old skater mums who love street skating down the local.I will embrace extreme bingo soon.
Not every day you receive offer of a book contract on your birthday 🎉 Excited to be writing ‘Skateboarding and Social Justice: Activism, Power and Change’ with such a great co-author

Can understand how some of you never stood up for the kids at school picked on by bullies. You were weak. But in academia, a lot of you now have big salaries, security, titles and status. You are smart and have power. Take a stance or be ashamed of who you’ve become now and why.
Born in Vietnam, daughter of a maid. First home: orphanage. Bio father unknown: soldier, rich man, poor man, local, foreigner, lost? Am nobody, anybody, everybody. History: a vague mix of info in French-Viet & some Chinese. Am dust of life making sense of it every day.
@milhousereborn
we have pretty good healthcare in Australia 🙂 free hospital, and I stretch a lot. I use to dance, my ankles are really flexible. Be like water my friend lol. Asian people do tai chi right up in old age too, to centre body and grace so hope to learn that soon off Internet
Skateboarding is central to my life but 2 months ago a guy sexually harassed me at my fave local. I pretty much stopped going there, even though lots had my back and called him out. Few nights ago heard that skateboarder publicly hassled more women, fighting etc. No shock. Tired
There is no honour to let such hate be rewarded. More social scientists need to speak up too. An OAM was gratefully received for my Vietnamese community work in 2006. It is time for me to return it as stance of support for LGBTIQ+ community & anti-racism. Full statement later
Australian politicians and journalists: “Look, Court has personal opinions, which, if you put them aside—“
Margaret Court, PUBLICLY: “Homosexuality is an ‘abominable sexual practice’, gay people are ‘like Hitler’, lesbians ‘ recruit’ the youth and trans kids are ‘of the devil’.”
Old clip Thursday - was actually a really fun street session back when I was in my 40s and a cranky lady in a power suit with big newsreader hair told us ‘kids’ to stay out of trouble 😇❤️🛹

As a woman of colour, even with a PhD, peer reviewed publications, years of community engagement, lived experience and so on, it’s still often an uphill battle to get people to take your insights and expertise as equal to a white person who has same or far less experience.
Am rubbish at transition and I always look so surprised when I roll away from a trick on anything higher than a 5 cent coin these days haha

Probably first 49 year old mum (I turn 50 in just over week) to get $100 prize for going in skateboarding competition hehe. UQ Life Alumni and Students Division mini ramp jam today. I got PhD here in 2010. As Viet war orphan life’s path is always surprise. Thanks

Just a punk, who did ballet, and got a PhD on the way. You can take the kid off the street but you can’t take the street out of the kid 💃🏻🛹
Throwback few years ago. Nostalgia pics in lead up to my 50th in October
What do people wear on academic panels? Am still proud of turning up at UQ in a boob tube, best Supre jacket, skinny jeans and silver glittery heels to first ever academic conference (because someone said you “had to dress up”).
It’s tough out there. But remember you are awesome & have skills, studies & experiences to create worlds you & others can share & thrive in. And don’t restrict your worth to anyone telling you to fit in, measure up to or follow rules that put yours & others’ best interests last
Fitting in was a challenge for Vietnamese orphan Dr Indigo Willing, so she has created her own community. She co-founded Girls Skate Brisbane to give girls and women a safe space to skateboard.

Why does watching skate videos make you feel you are more confident and capable, like you can skate better and maybe super awesome next time you roll (whether you do or not)?
As an extreme nerd, I want someone to explain the positive psychology at play

The racism growing up was intense and it was hard to feel human. At 49 I still get yelled at but need to transcend beyond caring what people think. I am Vietnamese and we are strong, smart and tough. We also take care of others and stand strong in footsteps of great ancestors.
Who else rolls around switch pretty well but learned your bail and fall reflexes in reverse can be none existent? My cheekbone hurt like hell back when I did this and still doesn’t trust me lol but I try skate around switch a lot more now.

As an adopted child from the Vietnam War, it haunts me everyday that now elderly (who survived), today’s adults and children, and shockingly, tomorrows as well, will still carry the impact of war. In a new project tba I will explore several reverberations and community power
Little mum meets big ledge 🐨 These ledges are hard work at 51 😆 thank you

for West LA Court House visit today as part of street skate, cute dogs, modello beer and taco mission after 4 day SDSU conference.
50 is my magic number atm! Heading toward 50 years old in October. And over 50+ interviews combined done with my co-author for a book. A lot of data to analyze! So time to jump into hibernation again. See you after a writing blitz. Let’s hope I come back with a clean kick flip!
Skateboarding in middle age helps people navigate depression, bond with their children and cope with personal trials, a new study from the University of Exeter shows.

50 going on 5000+ years old according to Vietnamese legend of ancestors of the fairy princess Au Co. After ten years as an academic I feel a million years old, but as a skateboarder my vibe is eternally immature!
Exciting news for 2022, from March - Dec will be working w. team of researchers on the ‘Rolling Free - Leading Equity, Diversity & Inclusion in Skating’ Women Leaders in Sport - a national project for Skate Australia. More news tba.

Found a random person’s ATM card on ground during Black Lives Matter march. Found them later on FB via mutual friend due to their unusual name. They left this as a thank you when they collected it from my door step this morning. How’s that for negatively stereotyping protesters?
How is it almost September? Well then, gonna be 51 in October. Handed in co-written book manuscript w. Anthony yesterday! It’s a great age and decade to do whatever🌻
Many non Indigenous sports journalists and scholars are disappointed in the aggressively harsh punishment an Indigenous player received for reacting to the news of the death of a key symbolic figure of colonization.

After around 45 minutes each time of practicing kick flips but constantly failing and almost swearing to quit, I land like this a couple of times and feel that one day landing bolts is possible. This is hard. Why did I not take up knitting?

The pressure in academia to write with an extremely dull and lifeless technical vocabulary is often the standard. I desire the rich descriptions and bold, rowdy observations embraced by ethnographic and qualitative research. The gritty kind, not the pretentious flexing though.
2020 saw in 3 journal articles, an edited book, a co-authored book deal, 3 journalism articles, launched a website on consent, 5 invited talks, media coverage & taught research courses across disciplines. A big year, on casual contracts, grateful to my friends & opportunities 🙏🏽
Once a kid at school said mockingly to me at lunch time ‘got fwide wice?’ (as in fried rice) so I proudly got out my sandwich from my lunch box, told them this is for lunch, and threw it in their face like a cream pie at a circus. But was devon and tomato sauce on tip top bread
When racists yell out “fuck off we're full" fair enough, Asians ARE swamping the streets ...with great food. At restaurants. On Masterchef. At the takeaway. So be sure to yell back "then don't eat so much of our yummy food!"
My day off 💕 visit new Lota skatepark. It’s perfect! Rotation on kickflip attempt on bank felt like progress even tho bailed lol. You win some lose some. Still smiling. Life at 50 is super fun with skateboard 🙂

Have always wanted to skate picnic table like in American skate vids. I think this take 50 tries and super slow but at least rolled away 🙂
Some of us are the turtle not the hare and that’s OK 🐢🐰
Finished lecturing in qualitative methods for 2022 and from next Monday more time just to do research and writing. I also coach beginners skateboarding, short term gigs and things for community. It’s low pay, it’s for the love and people but super dope using PhD this way 💕🦋
I think next week I’ll be able to skateboard again (6 weeks of resting after rib injury) and can’t wait to skate baby curbs, lowest snail height rails and mini mini quarters. My happy places at 51.
Can take the kid off the street but can’t take the street out of the kid ;) Lil skate on way to Mum’s for dinner at Christmas. Don’t tell her why I was late.

The irony of a time when a man said I just skate ‘to meet guys’. I co-founded one the largest girls & womxn’s skate networks in my state because guys were almost the only skaters you’d meet. Skating is for every gender, & much more fun & fresh now. The supporters of this rule.
First try lol. Fighting to save my silly ledge tricks but hey I’m only turning 52 later this year so still time to grow this into a krooked grind 😆📹

Yes so rad. And a MIT architecture graduate who has designed skateable sculpture in Sweden, an artist for WKND, 7 X Games medals and at 33 a future Olympian
Was born in Vietnam War. Am from an orphanage. Adopted. Part of the Diaspora. I write about these things. From deep in my soul. But I also write a lot on skateboarding
Asians do write more than just migrant trauma. We have many, not just one narrative.
With Insta and FB down, it nice break from so many dudes commenting, as if they are a Miss Universe judge & SLS or X Game judge all at once, but on a nearby 50 year old mum’s just for fun skate video. I look how I look, & skate as I do. And I grow stronger
