Unhoused residents described this push, through regulations and design, from the sidewalks and streets to the ocean as a new frontier of displacement. Restrooms have also been locked.

DIY urban design interventions in collab with unhoused residents and organizers based on dissertation research
We took advantage of a break in the rain to paint two crosswalks by a homeless encampment, brought to our attention by three separate requests. Cars killed two residents in past years and injured another in January.
The city doesn't keep us safe, so we keep us safe.

Hostile design: Towing criminalizes people for finding a place to sleep.

That is also a concern with unhoused residents. Punishing all unhoused people because a small percentage use drugs by closing the restrooms doesn’t do anything. Harm reduction/safe use sites with outreach maybe away from the boardwalk and bathroom redesign instead of policing?

Hostile designs (crosswalk removed 3 days after installation)
Death won’t make the city act, but a new crosswalk will. Instead of using their resources to help house those living in encampments, the city decided to spend their time removing our efforts to make them safer. Two unhoused residents were killed by cars here.

Public spaces have historically been sites of social and political conflict. Unhoused residents have rights to public space. Housed residents have the privilege to access private spaces and access public spaces.

I’m with this take ^ US suburbanization is very different than Eurocentric urbanism. Different built environments and political economies require different spatial solutions for skateboarders (parks vs spots)
