This passage from an article (in a sub-tweet to Duncan’s tweet below, worth a read) changed the way I think about architecture more than anything else that I’ve ever read. We need to start building differently.

@NFBUK @KiMcGuinness They do work. If you don’t float the bus stop you’re mixing buses and bikes, the biggest and smallest road users. Like any change to road layouts, it takes a short period for people to adapt. Where these have been used elsewhere they’re just part of the street fabric.

This (taken Friday) is an increasingly common sight for Newcastle cyclists. For everyone else, this is the newly opened re-landscaping of Grey St, our most famous street. A new dedicated cycle lane going uphill… blocked by taxis. So you have to cycle into oncoming traffic.

@cookson_mike @o_burbidge @lf_p @EPERiley There’s some good stuff in there, but overall I’m not hopeful that the level of change that is necessary to change people’s perception of the city centre will occur. People need to see the centre as somewhere to go for the sake of it, even when you don’t need to buy something.
