@Chris_arnade American soft power is tied to a certain idea of what America is, that is reflected in reality, I think. Freedom is essential to that. Or why is there no Russian Taylor Swift? You change the core of that idea, you change the brand of America, its cultural power might not thrive.

BREAKING NEWS: Republican Senator Jerry Moran of Kansas has split with his party to admonish the reckless and illegal shutdown on USAID: Moran says the aggressive change at the USAID office shut down left $340 million in lifesaving food grown in the United States sitting at domestic ports, waiting to be delivered to various destinations where people are STARVING. "Time is running out before this lifesaving aid perishes," Moran said. "Food stability is essential to political stability, and our food aid programs help feed the hungry, bolster our national security and provide an important market for our farmers, especially when commodity prices are low." This is not a democratic vs. republican issue. This is a humanitarian issue! Thank you Senator Moran for speaking out!

As a DC area pilot, I'm stunned by the tragedy at DCA last night, & my thoughts go out to the loved ones of those who perished in the crash. There's a fair bit of ill-informed opining going on about what happened, which is unhelpful. Here's what looks to me like the best informed commentary I've seen thus far:

@OldHollowTree The amount of singing birds that cats kill is absolutely staggering. More than a billion (est.) each year. Not the cats’ fault - hunting is what hunters do. A leash is ridiculous, but at least put a bell on house cats that run free.
