AI software engineers are compared to humans based on SWE-bench, which mainly covers Python tasks with ≤15 line changes evaluated by unit tests. I wrote this article to provide a framework to assess if AI's progress on this benchmark is relevant to you
My team at
@coinbase
is hiring. If you’re a backend or frontend engineer (React/React Native) interested in working on some cutting edge borrowing and lending products, contact me.
The root cause of many of Americas problems is that a high percentage of its politicians are lawyers and not engineers, scientists or people who actually build things. The world needs less lawyers like this guy and more people who actually build things.
I’m bored with Elon Musk.
I’m bored with Jeff Bezos.
I’m bored with Mark Zuckerberg.
I’m bored hearing nonstop about a few lucky billionaires, who invented nothing, freed no one, and saved no lives, being treated as superhuman celebrities. They’re just rich dudes. Yawn.
If you have skills, I think the best way to invest in cryptocurrency is to go work at a company and ship things. It doesn’t matter if it’s
@coinbase
,
@tryShowtime
,
@Uniswap
,
@krakenfx
,
@opensea
or
@edgeandnode
. Pick the best one you can get into & work with smart ethical people.
Currently the
#1
app in the App Store is written using React Native. With a higher user rating than many of its native iOS competitors, for example, Robinhood (4.1 vrs 4.7 stars).
If you’re interested in a remote crypto job in the US, I think
@coinbase
offers the best bang for your buck. 1) work on cutting edge tech. 2) good comp with liquid equity. 3) main competitors dead.
@chintanturakhia
is hiring frontend devs right now. Reply if interested.
@dan_coff
I member those times. Turns out, not having to worry about pesky things like laws or not robbing your customers can allow you to ship faster and grow your KPIs!
The blog post I wrote about the history of
@coinbase
’s mobile applications transitioning to React Native just went live. Lots of people worked hard to make this happen.
This year we've successfully upgraded our applications to React Native. In this blog we explore the engineering challenges and lessons for building React products at scale.
Happy to announce I’m switching over to manage a new team at
@coinbase
that’s working on an ambitious project. If you are a backend or React Native engineer in the USA or Canada who’s interested in web3, send me a DM.
If I was building a new React Native app in 2022, I would hands down use
@expo
. Everything from React Native Web to over the air updates to build pipelines have all improved rapidly. Hats off to the team for consistently shipping a great product.
The thing I like about
@expo
is it makes it possible for people who can’t afford a MacBook or an iPhone to write their first app and have it be used by all their friends. Lowering the barriers to having fun writing software with friends is one of the things that inspires me.
React and the JavaScript ecosystem have lifted a lot of people out of poverty. The time leverage these tools give means that you don’t have to live in the Bay Area, own an expensive MacBook and iPhone or have the right connections to write an App that impacts billions of people.
After nearly 5 years, today is my last day at Coinbase. It's been the best job I've had. I'm bullish on crypto and think Coinbase is still a great place to work. What's next? Taking time off to explore ideas I've wanted to work on for a while. More updates to come!
Analysts are excited about the Coinbase and Blackrock deal. I’m more excited about the new Coinbase Wallet rewrite and what it means for web3 adoption. Tradfi thinks crypto is just about trading. I think web3 will usher in a new era of apps and wallets are the spear tip.
My team at
@coinbase
just closed our first hires in 🇧🇷 and 🇨🇦. We still have headcount and are looking for backend engineers interested in working on cutting edge web3 products. If that sounds like you, DM me. If that sounds like someone you know please retweet and share!
@seldo
Sadly not everyone is an NPM employee who had an amazing exit and can afford to work for free. I think people who contribute to open source should be paid more money.
Bom Dia!
@coinbase
are now hiring engineers in Brazil🇧🇷. If you or someone you know is an experienced React, React Native or backend engineer that wants to work on some awesome cryptocurrency projects, send me you're resume and signal boost this post. I'll refer you in directly
@Kazanjy
I wonder if institutionalized grade inflation in the USA is why you are getting salty replies. My reading of what you were saying: Getting a C isn’t going to get you fired but don’t expect a big bonus or to get promoted for just meeting expectations. Which seems reasonable.
If you have the right backend skills and care deeply about crypto, this job and team is probably one of the best to work on at
@coinbase
. Definitely don’t sleep on this opportunity it’s gonna be a moon mission.
The Base team is hiring- very hard work to be done, awesome people to work with- and of course, we're all incredibly based 🔵.
New roles:
- Protocol Eng: Help us scale the OP Stack to 1Ggas/s
- Head of DevRel: Supercharge the amazing Base builder
Dan gets it. Allowing 80 million normal people to access dapps without having to remember a 12 word phrase or copy and paste addresses is a big UX unlock.
So far
@farcaster_xyz
is the best crypto social product in my opinion. Really like the approach
@varunsrin
and
@dwr
are taking to building a carefully curated community of crypto builders and a developer platform. Also the mobile app is pretty awesome (good job
@nick_cherry
).
Decided to change my twitter pic to my favorite
@crypto_coven
witch that I own. It will be nice when Twitter supports NFTs natively, hopefully we can see a list of everyone who publicly identifies with the coven and links it to their profile.
Aside from the React Native core team have done an amazing job, a huge part of the reason one person can build an app like blue sky can be attributed to its ecosystem and tools. Example:
@expo
and its build pipeline makes running mobile CI very easy
1)Finally watched
@dabit3
's interview with
@Cooopahtroopa
about DAO's and community ownership. It's a must watch if you're curious about the space and want to know what a DAO is. Lots of examples, links and opinions were exchanged. I summarize some key points for twitter below 👇
In my opinion more cryptocurrency people should follow
@_patrickogrady
on twitter. The man was a beast on the crypto team at
@coinbase
(rosetta was one of his big wins) and is VPE at
@avalabsofficial
. It’s amazing seeing how quickly Avalanche has evolved
Go checkout the new Coinbase Mobile wallet SDK optimized for developers building native mobile apps. My team has been working on for the last few months, I’ll share some interesting details about what makes it compelling 👇🏻

I spent about 7 months of my life working on this with a team of incredibly talented people. Being able to use dapps directly within the main Coinbase app using multi party computation is an incredible experience. I’m very excited to see this ship.
I don’t want more tweets from Sam about FTX as I trust nothing he says. I want crypto influencers he sponsored to apologize and donate FTX proceeds to charity. Plenty of influencer bank balances went up only by encouraging people to ditch reputable exchanges like Coinbase for FTX
I am going to interview
@alekschichkanov
, the creator of the
@opensea
mobile app next week. The app is written using
@FlutterDev
. If you have questions about NFTs & AppStores or why they didn't use
@reactnative
, etc please submit them using this form
This is my teams product. This is the frustrating reality many cryptocurrency companies face. You often get held to a standard that your competitors don’t and the rules are applied arbitrarily.
@zebulgar
The root causes: things involving atoms don't pay very well, require an expensive education (masters, phd) and the government likes to regulate them. The amount of friends I've had who've dropped out of science phds to work at FAANG is depressing. We need to change the incentives
.
@farcaster_xyz
could become a mainstream social network within 6-18 months. The thing preventing this from happening is the fact that it’s so crypto focused. A breakout signal for me is seeing non crypto communities get traction on it. Here’s how I think this could play out:
@Altimor
I know musicians who are great programmers. They focus & practice for hours doing something they initially suck at until they get good at it. It’s not just about being capable, it’s also about having the will to defer enjoyment for a long time. Most people ain’t good at that.
The next Miami Cryptocurrency Builders meetup, hosted by me and
@iam_preethi
, is on 10/28/2021. Our first talk is by
@_james_foley_
and
@mikey_rf
of
@OverlayProtocol
, it's on Assessing Risk for a Novel DeFi Protocol. See below to RSVP and for more details
@rsg
@elonmusk
Agreed. I feel theirs been a lot of unquestioned assumptions about headcount this past decade due to low interest rates. We are about to learn how lean and profitable these companies can be at scale. Would firing 50% of Meta or Alphabet make a difference?
Hey all, just letting everyone know I am still employed at Coinbase. Thanks for reaching out. For anyone who was lost a job, if you need help please don’t hesitate to reach out.
Trying to make writing a regular habit. Here’s my second post: How might a solo entrepreneur build a billion-dollar business leveraging DApps? Mainly inspired by
@cdixon
,
@balajis
and
@farcaster_xyz
I can’t believe we are approaching a floor price of 3 ETH since November 21. What’s impressive about this is that unlike many other projects discussing prices is banned from the
@crypto_coven
discord and all this adoption has been organic. Can’t wait for L2 witches!
I had a great time interviewing
@alekschichkanov
today about how he built the
@opensea
mobile app. We spoke about
@FlutterDev
, web3, React Native and of course the drama involved in shipping an NFT app via the Apple AppStore. Once editing is done I will publish the recording here
I look at the amount of cash sitting on Google, Facebook, Microsoft or Apples balance sheets and I think 70-90% of that should be given back to people who use the products. This is the type of competition I want to see web3 enable. If your not reinvesting redistribute it.
My team worked on this release and it’s got some awesome web3 dev features such as: integrated Testnet Faucets & asset views, Multi-wallet support, Redesigned network management, Access to private key for use with local dev (hardhat). Details below 👇🏻
GM! We’re excited to launch a set of powerful developer features and upgrades to Coinbase Wallet!
Including: testnet faucets, seamless network switching, advanced settings...🧵
Really happy to share something me and my team have been working on for the last few months. Please check it out if you would like to learn about crypto and earn some free OP as a reward for doing an onchain task.
Exciting news for
@CoinbaseWallet
users: you can now explore Optimism through quests on Coinbase Wallet!
We're excited to be the first project featured in this guided in-app experience.
Wells Fargo has 8,050 branches in the USA and many other big buildings filled with office staff. When people say smart contracts are environmentally unfriendly I envision what % of those people driving to go work in air conditioned boxes could be replaced with a smart contract.
My full interview with
@alekschichkanov
about the creation of the
@OpenSeaOfficial
mobile app is now live. In it we cover the pros & cons of doing web3 with
@FlutterDev
, Apple AppStore NFT drama, selling his app to OpenSea and how to get a job in crypto
Sad day for coinbase. Just letting everyone know I was not impacted by this. If you are a former coinbase employee looking for a job in crypto or need any help my DMs are open. Happy to refer you to anyone in my network.
Coinbase CEO

Have to say I'm impressed with the resumes of the women I see publicly tweeting
@crypto_coven
witches. Strong community of women who work in or are interested in crypto and web3.
There’s a lot to learn from the stoicism and long-term focus of Coinbase founder Brian Armstrong.
Binance came on the scene in 2017 and captured lots of volume and attention from Coinbase. It appeared that Binance was overtaking Coinbase in the battle for crypto natives and many
Whenever I sit in a bank branch in a high rent area to do some task that could be done remotely, I think about the savings that could be passed on to its customers if the bank was a smart contract with no physical location. Today’s example: a wire transfer over the online limit.
React Native hiring pro tip, if you see
@swmansion
on their resume, it’s a very good sign. Place has a really great reputation, especially for open source. If you can deal with the timezone difference their are some amazing RN engineers in Europe for hire right now.
Previous week was my last at Rainbow.
It was a great time and I am very proud of what we have achieved with the team.
If anyone is looking for a React/React Native engineer – DMs are open.
@micsolana
It appears this guy worked as an engineering manager for a few years at Facebook. I assume he was making >= $500k USD per year and owns his own home. Yet he blames VCs for the gentrification which I assume he is alluding go as the root cause of crime in SF
@nikitabier
Meanwhile: random Linux guy from Texas who bought btc in 2014 likes this tweet from his off the grid bunker compound he bought with the proceeds of his crypto gains.
Can we stop trying to emulate rhetoric used by politicians in failed states like Venezuela? Clearly, Warren is an intelligent woman who knows how inflation works and this is deliberate political move to deflect attention. In general I feel politics in America needs a reset.
Wondering why your Thanksgiving groceries cost more this year? It’s because greedy corporations are charging Americans extra just to keep their stock prices high. This is outrageous.
I’m not a React Native maximalist or someone who has a grudge against native development. I just think it’s unreasonable to pretend that Native dev is the land of no jank. The early days of Swift were painful and caused a lot of jank, as was the UI transition from iOS 6 to iOS 7.
This is obviously nonsense and not true. I’m sure the people following me are intelligent enough not to believe a 4chain Coinbase “insider” tweet but if you have a moment, please like and retweet this to help combat half baked fud.
@EdgarArout
Dentists consulting model:
Charge money + tokens to consult on different projects, you do initial sales call, outline solution then outsource to assistant to implement with supervision/support from you. Optional partner with investors for lead gen. That or cofound a token.
Really excited to see
@expo
evolve as a product and a business. Seeing them offer paid tiers and awesome features like this makes me optimistic about their longevity.
Today the
@Expo
team is fully releasing Expo Application Services (EAS), the 1st chapter of a new era for Expo with support for native code and a yearlong+ team project. We've designed EAS to be optional but excellent for taking your Expo apps from development to the app stores.
My best career decisions: 1) Get a CS degree in the early 2000s when offshoring was at its peak. 2) Move to San Francisco in 2008 when the stock market was crashing. 3) Start working at Coinbase during the 2018 crypto crash.
If you don’t have the skills invest in learning & relationships. Ideally by building with other people either through a bootcamp (
@iam_preethi
) or applying for a grant (
@AaveGrants
). If you are not ready to do that, read articles by people like
@dabit3
and build on your own time
It’s sad to see Chloe get a lot of abuse for taking a job at Coinbase. One of the consistent lessons I’ve learnt during my life is that sometimes you need to cause a problem, shakeup the status quo & annoy people to get what you want. Ignore the twitter mob and focus on building.
Oh interesting, the OpenSea mobile app is written using
@FlutterDev
? It’s pretty nice. Has anyone from
@opensea
engineering talked publicly about this yet?
But I thought nobody used React Native any more? Wasn’t it a passing fad that went out of fashion back when Airbnb decided to sunset it. Don’t all the cool iOS kids do SwiftUI development these days? It’s almost like developer productivity and cost effectiveness are important.
Translation: Zuck passes on controversial topics (news/politics/etc), leverages IGs massive distribution and gets all the lucrative advertising (Ford, GM, MCD, etc). Elon is left with topics that are toxic to these advertisers and gets the Alex Jones/Ali Express tier advertising.
Good news.
For about 24 hours, the journos thought they were back. That the other app would favor them. That they would be back in the saddle, free to slander and censor once again.
But rather than becoming Soviet Twitter, it’s going to be Instagram Twitter.
Which is fine.
@kandarpddave
@rsg
@coinbase
Nope. Expo is great but it wasn’t a fit for us because we already had mobile build pipelines, strict vendor policies, lots of experienced mobile engineers and some native dependencies (price widget). Generally I think expo is best for early stage startups.
General tech resume advise: 1) be concise, try to fit everything on 1 page 2) list industry experience first, I.e company, title, dates 3) if it’s not a brand name explain what the company does 3) describe what you did at co in 1-2 1 line bullet points. 4) degrees & skills last
Also a big shout out to
@jessepollak
who was instrumental to shaping and pushing forward
@coinbase
’s React Native strategy from a management perspective. I’ve learnt a lot about engineering strategy from working with him over the years.
0/ 🔵 Hello world.
Meet Base, an Ethereum L2 that offers a secure, low-cost, developer-friendly way for anyone, anywhere, to build decentralized apps.
Our goal with Base is to make onchain the next online and onboard 1B+ users into the cryptoeconomy.
People worried about AI replacing software jobs dramatically underestimate the amount of legacy systems, janky processes & crappy code propping up the modern world. Moving off all this, even with AIs help, will take years. I feel doing so will unlock more new jobs than before.

100% agree with
@jessepollak
. Nice to see top talent migrating to cryptocurrency. Given how fickle AppStore rules can be I think React Native is the best choice for cryptocurrency companies building mobile apps. Having a quality wallet like
@rainbowdotme
be open source is awesome
Just sent notice to my landlord that I will be leaving my apartment & SF at the end of June. Haven’t decided where Harry HQ 2.0 will be just yet but it will be somewhere outside of California. I have many friends in SF so no doubt I’ll be back to visit soon.
Yesterday at RNCK I demoed our new React Native IDE project we developed
