My honest answer to this, which I hear a lot (not picking on Jesse), is that Trump bullshits—he exaggerates, or garbles details of, things that are basically true, and tends to “lie” mostly when it concerns his personal honor (crowd size, sleeping with the porn star, etc)

Yeah the hands up thing is a good example of the left doing this, for sure. I just don't think any prominent figure on the Dem side lies anywhere near as insanely egregiously as Trump, and I don't think it's close. Of course both sides engage in tribalistic motivated reasoning

This actually is a great Dem talking point because it works at two levels. There's the dumb level—that of the "Trump crime spike" somehow controlled by Biden-Harris. The second level is—yes, of course crime spiked under Trump, because WE made it spike, just like WE turned it

Crime is way down, not way up - and violent crime and murder are below where they were in 2020, Trump's last year in office. Preliminary FBI data found a 6% decline in violent crime in 2023 and 15% in the first quarter of 2024. It's preliminary, yes, but the direction is clear.

If they hadn't had to put Biden on television with Trump they would have just kept pretending he was completely fine and most of the media would have gone along with it. Journalists who didn't would have been denied WH access and attacked by their peers
