I agree nonbank consumer financial services is different today than 15 years ago. I’m just wondering that if push comes to shove, Trump and co. decide to ax the CFPB, I can’t imagine its functions disappear overnight, which makes me wonder why a lot of it couldn’t be shifted to FTC. Again, I know it’s not in the statute currently. But I’d guess that progressives and the like would prefer the FTC to inherit powers of the CFPB over a complete rollback to pre-Dodd Frank?

The only regulator who could oversee a Musk super app would be the CFPB. You see what that crackdown could look like when the it began investigating PayPal for censorious debanking. Without the CFPB, he has all the incentives to operate a Chinese style super app w/ no oversight.

Other thing of note too: You hear tech all the time say that old laws can’t possibly apply to the economy of today. Congress passes Dodd-Frank, consolidates dispersed powers, addresses fintech and the like… Tech: NO. Not like that!
