Life can move fast. There were many times I thought I wouldn’t play pro basketball. I wasn’t producing enough in games. I kept playing though. Two games into pro career. Averaging over 20 and 10 and just got interviewed by the ESPN of this country! Don’t quit.

One thing that can be helpful in shifting paradigms is examining your definition of skill. What is your definition of skill? I believe every coach should ask themselves this question. It reveals a lot about your paradigm.

@BballCoachMac I like this page, but unfortunately this take is not supported by the evidence in the field of motor-skill acquisition.

Performance exists in the present moment. There are so many ways to improve at the skill of being in the present. Why don’t coaches teach them?

🧠🧼Players play better with a clear mind. If you’re a player, make that a responsibility of YOURSELF. If you’re a coach, you might get more out of your players if you help them get there.

🏀🧠🔑If you have a player that gets nervous at the free throw line, have them smile (even if it’s fake) when they get there. Their brain will start to develop a more positive relationship with being on the free throw line. It’s corny, but it works.

🧠🏀🔑 If you’re in your own head when shooting, start talking out loud while you shoot. Your brain will be occupied with the words and can’t think about what the body is doing. You will shoot more naturally. I like to say “lock, shoot, swish.”

🏀🧠💭 Learning to shoot in hectic environments (contested, w/ noise, w/ things on the line, w/ option to make other decision) is a trainable skill. Players need to learn to relax in chaos. How many shots in your training/practice have these things included?

🏀🧠🔑 If you struggle with confidence, you likely should work on techniques to be in the present moment. When you are in the present, ‘confidence’ is a non-existent thing.

🏀🧠👀 Here is a drill every hooper should do before games: Stand at half court dribbling the ball. Switch back and forth from locking your eyes on the rim and scanning the court with peripheral vision. Great players switch between the two visual systems with ease.

Was working with a player this week on defining purpose. He landed on “Confidence and resilience equals success.” I feel confidence is more of a choice than most people make it out to be. Thoughts?
