Please watch the video with sound. D-Day Diary 6 June, 1944 USA: American news broadcast picked up the first news of the invasion, which was reported on German radio. London 0932 hrs: SHAEF HQ authorizes all newspapers to release the news that Allied forces have landed on the northern coast of France. Omaha Beach American zone  0630 The first landings occur at Omaha. The initial waves meet heavy fire from the bluffs overlooking the beach. Heavy machine gun fire and artillery shred the first landers from the 29th and 1st infantry divisions. Omaha Beach is over four football fields deep at low tide, requiring infantry to advance an enormous distance exposed in the open against heavily fortified Germans in the heights. It is a slaughter. Utah Beach American zone 0645: Heavy drift from the north has caused the guide boats to lead the assault to land about 2 miles further south than planned. It is fortuitous, as the number of enemy gun placements is less dense in the landed spot than in the intended zone. Within the hour, US infantry moved above the low-lying sand dunes and began fighting inland to link up with some airborne troops by nightfall. Gold Beach British zone 0725 hrs: British troops also cleared the beach within the first 45 minutes and pressed into the resort hamlets behind it, rooting out German infantry. Many German troops in this sector surrendered, as these were Russian or Polish conscripts. By nightfall, the 50th Infantry and 8th Armoured Brigade had driven almost to the objective line 4 miles inland. Juno Beach Canadian  zone 0750 hrs: The Canadian 3rd infantry division encountered extra rough seas, and heavy beach obstacles. Linking with the British at Gold, the Canadian and British beachhead is 12 miles wide and 4 miles deep.   Gold Beach British zone 0735 British and French Allies battle fiercely to get off the heavily defended beaches, with a mangled jam of landing craft owing to stormy sea swells and the German 21st Panzer division striking late in the day. Omaha Beach 1400 hours: The Germans' withering fire from the bluffs was finally suppressed by courageous American destroyer captains running their ships close to shore and pummeling emplacements. And by infantry working to fire, move, and fire, advancing slowly up the slopes to flank the remaining machine gun nests. By nightfall, the Omaha beachhead is a tenuous 1 mile deep, 6 miles wide. But the Allies are ashore. Germany's "Atlantic Wall" is breached in a DAY.  While the fate of the Allied landings emained in doubt for the next week, Eisenhower never released his communication of failure. D-Day, indeed, was the longest day.

Today, 2 February, marks the official first session of the U.S. Supreme Court. While the court was originally meant to convene on 1 February, 1790, only three of the six justices were present, delaying the official opening. The justices, appointed by Washington, were—Chief Justice, John Jay, and five Associate Justices: James Wilson, William Cushing, John Blair, John Rutledge and James Iredell. The six man Supreme Court first met in New York City, the Nation’s capitol at the time, meeting twice a year—February and August. The first docketed case was not until 1791 (Van Staphorst v. Maryland). In the 235 years, the Supreme Court has heard ~30,000 cases.
