Critics of psychiatry are adding fuel to the fire of the DWP's benefit cuts agenda The desire to focus on de-medicalising mental health could result in real harm & suffering, & more deaths on the DWP's watch, argues @suzypuss in her first piece for us 👇

I was prescribed Valium syrup at the age of five for an “anxious tummy“ because I had diarrhoea constantly. It transpired that I actually had ulcerative colitis. This was diagnosed when I was 25 and nearly died from bleeding out. I have been on benzodiazepines constantly since my Valium syrup, without a break, a period of nearly 60 years. I have been suffering all of the side effects mentioned in the article for a while now and my life is hell. I have been advised to not attempt to taper off them due to my age and history. The moral of this story is don’t take benzodiazepines.

Benzos are always given for anxiety despite doctors knowing they make many anxiety types much worse (that need other therapies). As @MidwesternDoc shows here, benzos have many severe side effects and are so addictive one prescription can hook you for life

Well done Peter Kay. The odd, relevant heckle is OK at comedy events but constant, mindless heckling by drunken people is a disturbance and unacceptable.

If you heckle a comedian non-stop expect attention & a big comeback. And the quip Peter Kay made about the Lisa Riley look-a-like - “in the black & white top from Debenhams blue cross” was 🤣 #garlicbread 🥖

@JDaviesPhD @atomicaceso It’s hardly difficult to have an effect size larger than antidepressants! Poisoned M&Ms would have the same effect as antidepressants! I’m teasing; keep the fantastic posts coming!

The Hidden Dangers of SSRIs: A Call for Greater Awareness --- I have been Dxd with MDD (age 12) & BPD (age 39) & have been taking antidepressants for 50 years without a break. I was prescribed Prozac in 1986, so I have been taking SSRIs for about 40 years. I am suffering from all of the side effects including hypothyroidism; this has lead to peripheral neuropathy, which has essentially made me disabled. I am now starting to develop some symptoms of akathisia, which fills me with dread. I have been advised to not try tapering them due to my age and medication history. Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRIs) have become one of the most commonly prescribed medications for depression, anxiety, & various other mental health conditions. While they have been lauded for their effectiveness in managing symptoms for some (3%), it's crucial to shed light on the other side of the coin - the potential devastating side effects & health risks associated with these drugs. THE UNSPOKEN RISKS: - Withdrawal Symptoms: One of the most significant issues with SSRIs is the difficulty in discontinuing them. Users often face severe withdrawal symptoms, which can be debilitating, including dizziness, nausea & what's colloquially known as "brain zaps." - Increased Risk of Suicidal Thoughts: Particularly alarming is the risk of increased suicidal ideation, especially in young adults and adolescents. This side effect is so concerning that many countries require a black box warning on these medications. - Sexual Dysfunction: Many users report long-lasting or mostly permanent sexual side effects (even after a short course of SSRIs), including numbness of genital area, decreased libido, erectile dysfunction & anorgasmia, which can significantly impact quality of life. - Serotonin Syndrome: Although rare, when combined with other serotonergic drugs, SSRIs can lead to serotonin syndrome - a potentially life-threatening condition with symptoms ranging from agitation to muscle rigidity & high fever. - Long-Term Health Consequences: There's growing research suggesting links between long-term SSRI use & other health issues like hypothyroidism, dementia, bone density reduction, increased risk of bleeding, cognitive decline & even akathisia in some users. HERE ARE SOME STEPS WE CAN ALL TAKE: - Education: Patients need to be fully informed about potential side effects before starting treatment. - Monitoring: Continuous monitoring by healthcare providers can help manage side effects or recognize when a medication might not be the right fit. - Alternative Therapies: Exploring alternatives like therapy, lifestyle changes or other forms of medication should be part of the conversation. - Personal Narratives: Sharing personal experiences can help others feel less isolated & more informed about what they might expect. - Advocacy: Advocate for research into the long-term effects of SSRIs & for policies that ensure transparency in pharmaceutical marketing. CONCLUSION: While SSRIs have supposedly been a lifeline for some (3%), the narrative around their use must evolve to include a balanced discussion of risks versus benefits. Let's strive for a healthcare system where mental health treatment is personalised & where every patient is equipped with the knowledge to make informed decisions about their treatment. #MentalHealthAwareness #SSRIs #SideEffects #RisksOf SSRIs #HealthAdvocacy #PSSD #BPD #antidepressants #MDD #ChemicalImbalanceIsUnprovenScientifically #PsychiatryIsPureQuackery #PatientsBeforeProfits --- Remember, if you're currently on SSRIs, DO NOT adjust your medication without consulting your GP. There are also many Facebook groups which give tapering advice & help. This post aims to spark conversation and awareness, not to serve as medical advice.
