@GoodPoliticGuy
Australia's media landscape views on race issues are right wing by default. I don't want anyone thinking that our media is even remotely treats racial inequality seriously
This is FUNDAMENTAL as to why Victoria is shifting away from public housing.
Homes Victoria pays for GST; non-profits do not.
Homes Victoria can't receive Commonwealth Rental Assistance; non-profits can.
The Cth. punishes states for providing public over community housing!
I’m seeing this more and more, real estate agencies are sending reference requests asking about whether the prospective tenant has used social media to tell their story. This question should not be allowed in a reference check. This one’s from Altitude Property Management.
It’s
"No one wants to live in an apartment" is outdated logic. People just want somewhere to call home.
We need to allow for more medium density developments or soon people won't even be able to afford buying an apartment!
@KhaosKeswick
to rephrase what you're saying: you ultimately do NOT want transgender folk be distinguished from cis folk right? Your end goal for society is that the cis/trans distinction is not needed; thus labelling trans ppl queer regardless of sexuality is a barrier to this correct?
@thegoldenidle
The assumption here is a bit wrong. The background is live action. What's more likely is that they had reshoots and just chroma keyed in the background from the same scene so there was consistency
Well wortha read to learn how local councils are holding back affordability.

Ignoring the blatant xenophobia here, Melbourne does not resemble a European city at all.
We are missing the mixed used medium density that allows European cities to be human centric. We can make our city better whilst making our community larger!

When you said that "Frydenberg is the same Treasurer who helped drive this country out of debt – much of it racked up by Labor" did you mean deficit? Because last time I checked the Coalition has been increased debt by $300billion pre-pandemic.
The bizarre part of the YIMBY movement is the idea that somehow property developers are being out-smarted by NIMBY grandmas who can play the political system to their advantage.
Are we forgetting that the property industry is hugely over-represented at all levels of politics?
Maybe a planning system that empowers rapidly aging and wealthier inner-city homeowners over everyone else leads to bad outcomes? How could have seen this happening?
When people say "heritage overlays restrict development" this is what we mean:
This property has a tennis court taking up 50% of its land and is located 700m from a train station.
It's very frustrating for Max to make good valid arguments about our failure in building public and social housing but is insistent on trying to paint any solution other as evil!
Our housing crisis will not be solved with public housing alone! Housing abundance is key!
In other cases, property developers will drip feed private rentals onto the market in a way that ensures rents only ever go up. But it gets even worse…
A lot of people are dunking on Chip’s editorial line here, which I understand, but I think this points to a core systematic issue when it comes to reporting on upzoning and housing density:
Those that negatively affected are loud and easy-to-see. Those who benefit are not.
@AnnastaciaMP
This is bad optics. I get that the intended message is that get vaccinated is our ticket to travel/open borders but this reeks of political elitism that alienates people.
@sumeyyailanbey
Has Dvir Abramovich said anything about the number of far-right candidates that are more than happy to be associated with anti-Semitic conspiracy theories? I think it's a bit silly to be more concerned about the 'Nazi' label on these candidates than the candidates themselves...
As Howard has pointed out many times, oversupply has happened in Australia before and it reduced prices! This isn't controversial or groundbreaking stuff. It's just the on-the-ground reality!
One of the weirdest parts of upzoning debates is on one side there's a mountain of evidence, including from the RBA and NSW Productivity Commission that the kind of obvious point that building lots of housing reduces housing costs, and the NIMBY counterargument is 'nuh-uh'
I want to take Max in good faith here but he's completely omitting that he argued against the development on grounds relating to traffic, removal of a community garden and trees.
The development had more public park space than currently exists and was going to replant trees
I can think of at least 10 locations across Griffith ideal for public housing developments that I would actively support and encourage. But State and Fed Gov instead are choosing to chronically underfund public housing and hand over public land to property developers.

on the problem of NIMBYism.
Local councils tend to be the main locus of NIMBYism, believing (rightly or wrongly) that their constituents oppose development.
This gets to the core of NIMBYism (and some heritage folk)—it's fundamentally about fear of change. Everything else is reverse-engineered from that core.
Today SMH is covering Haberfield, the inner suburb full of 800sqm houses which can never change.
We’ve got a bunch of quotes in it but we’re upstaged by one that goes straight to the NIMBY hall of fame.
What can we do about it? Read on….
I feel like it's a mask off moment to claim the SRL precincts are like (((Beijing & Hong Kong)))
There's significant differences between the two and to imply they're the same is a very odd choice....
The Allan government is set to rezone huge parcels of land around Suburban Rail Loop stations to make way for high density development. Critics fear councils will be locked out of crucial planning decisions, as high-rise housing takes over.

NIMBYs that weaponise heritage in bad faith, not only unintentionally seek to make Melbourne more unlivable, but they also delegitimise heritage as a valid part of urban renewal discourse.
Melbourne's rental crisis in one image.
If on minimum wage, the red is 60% more of weekly income; if orange it's between 38-60%.
Our housing system needs to be fixed. Radical reform is needed.
An Aldi with housing above is probably the biggest policy win a city can hope to achieve
I love shopping like I'm in East Germany in 1959 knowing I'm getting rock bottom prices for groceries
I love Aldi
Anyone who pays close attention to local planning knows that new grocery stores nearly always face strong community backlash and significant hurdles in finding a suitable place to even be built.
Public housing is on its way out and community housing on the rise. But why? As YIMBY Melbourne organiser
@hillfolkAU
writes, it has everything to do with how the federal government funds the states.
As a left-winger, whilst understandable, I wish more of us understood how big of a barrier the Australian constitution is for bold ideas.
Even a policy as mild as Labor’s Help to Buy scheme is “unconstitutional”.
Two buildings very similar in scale. One shows a mature, steady hand, confidence, humility, and respect. The other is what almost every developer builds everywhere these days, and what most design codes are more likely to demand.
I try my best not to be snarky online, but damn, I struggle to have sympathy and kindness for those that so aggressively dislike the idea of social housing in their leafy green wealthy suburb.

fight against immigration scapegoating when it comes to the housing crisis.
We CAN build enough homes of all types to house EVERYONE!
@mayorquimby123
The difference is that during that time the government was building A LOT of public housing to ensure an adequate housing supply. We need to fight for that kind action today, and that won't be helped by blaming migrants for this crisis.
@yimbymelbourne
You have misspelled the word 'storey'.
Two storeys is not one storey. You can excavate a basement (like they do in London) instead. The materials and colours in this eyesore don't belong in this neighbourhood.
It's interesting to suggest that an apartment in the North Shore will cost the same as a large detached single dwelling.
It's also disappointing Hanmer seems disinterested in allowing more people to live closer to the CBD!
If you put more housing in high-priced suburbs, you will get more high-priced housing. This Minns brainwave will do nothing for affordability, but may well wreck Sydney.
Vacant land tax is good! But the obsession with it being a key tool to fixing the housing crisis is misguided.
It's been demonstrated numerous times the number of vacant homes is insignificant in scale.
It's so frustrating that negative gearing reformers push for it as a policy for improving rental prices. It simply will not improve rents and that's fine!
It's a bad taxation policy that we should fix on those grounds! Reducing generational inequality is good!
"Giving residents the right to build granny flats without a planning permit rides roughshod over community concerns and could irreversibly change streetscapes"
Does anyone in the City of Boroondara know what a granny flat is? Absurd.
Who advises Pesutto on infrastructure? He needs to let them go. The evidence from authorities such as Infrastructure Victoria states that in-fill infrastructure is cheaper than under urban sprawl!
No matter what you think of the Preston Market redevelopment plans, the new parking overlay demanding that there be no net loss to the number of market car parks is TERRIBLE!
It's right next to a train station, tram stop and fantastic cycling infrastructure. Utter lunacy!
It's hard to take people seriously when they claim objections against developments have more to do with protecting the community than protecting wealth.
The data suggests those with the highest socio-economic status object the most.
Renting a house in Australia costs just $39 more a week than renting a unit, compared to a difference of $64 a year ago, new research shows.
Say it with me now: WE NEED MORE APARTMENTS
@JoshFrydenberg
Wow. I was going to vote for Monique Ryan but now that there was some miscommunication about painting a mural, I can't possibly vote for her :( This is a big election issue
I find it upsetting that notable experts in the field of urban planning over the past few days have pointed to the constraints in the building sector as proof the planning system and local government are not an issue at all.
It's a deeply confusing position.
It's an absolute no-brainer to allow faith-based organisations to build social and affordable housing on their land.
The fact that a barrier is heritage overlays forced onto religious buildings - against the wishes of these groups - is wild.
This is a prime example of why Victoria's rate capping regime leads to worse outcomes for everyone.
Local Council's are being forced to implement austerity measures to keep their spending in line with their capped rates.
Brah the Stonnington Planning Scheme currently contains 16 different schedules to the GRZ with most containing variations to the maximum building height provisions.
What a hellscape
@georgiecrozier
It's almost like the state opposition party has been publicly undermining the state government's health advice this entire pandemic.......
It doesn't matter who pays that tax!!! If the Airbnb owner is charged they'll raise the price. If the user is charged the price is increased.
It's the same thing!!
The fiscal imbalance between the Commonwealth and states creates a perverse incentive for the states to offload as many services to private non-profits as possible as they can provide MORE services for MORE people.
Amendment VC243 just dropped:
It seems the Future Homes program has been expanded from 400m to 800m from train stations or activity centres! That's a massive shift!!!
