I had the opportunity to speak to incoming 9th graders at
@TheSEEDSchoolMD
. Apparently this is what I look like trying to hype kids up about being a dev and what devrel is.
They are building robots, learning python and JS! So different from my high school. So impressed!
@venikunche
Wow. The level of rage I feel about this has me typing and deleting responses to this so fast. I can't decide on something not full of vitriol so I will just say this...the way she was treated isn't unusual for women. He just said the quiet part out loud.
I am officially 1 year as a dev advocate this month!
Should I write a blog post about my experiences? Thinking it could be useful to anyone considering this path as the role varies in different companies.
New release just dropped🥳✨
Thanks everyone near and far for the birthday wishes. Spent it stuffing my face with great food and wine. Ready to welcome the next year and all it holds
@shashiwhocodes
Well my jaw dropped at $150k for a junior role that is also fully remote 😂
But I would say if you aren't hiring successfully, that's a hiring process problem and potentially a junior mentorship/onboarding problem.
A blanket no to self-taught juniors seems shortsighted to me
I may not be at
@MagnoliaJSconf
but happy to support my friends there from afar thanks to this great shirt
@_KaylaSween
created.
It's the perfect swag for my relationship with JS
Wow. I only knew about
@leonnoel
from the
#100devs
program and had no idea the extent of the work he's doing to get underrepresented folks hired. Most powerful con talk I've seen
It's my 1 year EddieHub anniversary!
First contribution? Updated a link
Became a maintainer? December.
Biggest takeaway? This graph is such a small part of the benefit of being involved in a supportive and lively
#opensource
community. Don't obsess.
Here's to another year!
Last full day of work before I leave for
#DeveloperWeek
. I'm fine tuning my slides and doing a dry run with some folks on my team.
How many dry runs do you like to do before a speaking session?
If you DM me to ask me to check out your product as a pitch and we have no relationship, I'm probably going to ignore you or respond with my freelance rates.
Is romance dead out here? Get to know me first plz 😂
Collaboration from afar!
Great time chatting with
@GrahamTheDev
about community building, devrel strategy, and his super cool camera that follows him around 👀
Incredible session on
#opensource
as always by
@eddiejaoude
If you have never caught him live yet, you will always leave with actionable ways to get involved or continue your journey in open source l.
So proud to be part of one of the most welcoming OS communities around.
Excited to share some news of another first for me this year!
@eddiejaoude
invited me to be a maintainer of the EddieHubLive repository
Super excited to expand my role in the EddieHub community and keep learning and growing with all the great folks there.
Now that I've recovered from a packed & amazing
@RenderATL
, I wanted to thank everyone who took a moment to tell me that you enjoyed my talk even DAYS later at
@ATLJavaScript
. S/o
@WixStudio
devs for creating a tool that allows me to demo such cool things in less than 15 min.
I say this often, but EddieHub community is really the most supportive and best folks around.
s/o to
@pradumna_saraf
and others for a little out of the blue pick me up on a week I was feeling checked out of social media and welcome to some new friends.
Accountability tweet!
I promised
@eddiejaoude
that I would join EddieHub and start contributing to OS.
My first PR is merged and my goal is to contribute at least once a week for now.
Also, it was fun and I've missed coding. Been forever since I touched React 😊
Two firsts for me completed 💪
1. I've never live coded from scratch with no prep
2. I've never pair programmed. Not for an interview or work
Thank you to
@eddiejaoude
for inviting me on stream to build live for LinkFree and find out that both of these things are not that scary
I just deleted every single screenshot and screen recording from my desktop AND closed all tabs except what I'm actually using right now. New year new me?
@kvlly
I feel like I should be able to enable a setting on my phone that is my default cookie preferences and they should just be read by every site using cookies and applied. None of us wanted another pop up banner in our life, we just wanted privacy and a little control.
Hearing from folks that a small few lines of code contribution I made to OS helped them learn or problem solve something is so motivating!
It's easy to feel like you don't have the time to contribute anything complicated or large when open source isn't part of your day job.
What are everyones thoughts on conference swag?
I tend not to pick up much at cons becuase I feel conflicted about these items environmental impact.
Is that silly? Is swag responsible? If not, what would be a way to replace it and have the impact/lure of it at a con booth?
I don't really wanna talk about why it took me so long, but I just bought a Switch. Send me game recs.
I like cozy games
Nostalgia games
Turn base strategy
Ending the week all prepared for a lunchtime session at
@smashingconf
next week. Can't wait to show y'all about Wix Headless.
Now to tell myself my slides are fine for the next few days 😂
Confession...
This was my 1st time leading a full day workshop
David and I went through JS basics, the Wix IDE, CSS editing, Wix AI asst and more.
A huge undertaking made possible by so many passionate attendees.
Feeling energized for the future of
@WixStudio
and
@DevsOnWix
Quick Tip: When using
@nextjs
and a library like
@LeafletJS
that isn't compatible with SSR you can use a dynamic import. Simple way to save yourself a headache.
Y'all. I'm cleaning out my basement and just found my first 2 coding books. This was back when I just needed to be able to make a quick map or code a script to run a GIS model. Getting nostalgic over here 🥺
Are you even a devrel if you aren't working on your slides in the airport? Excited to head to Miami for a week of education for
@WixStudio
If you are a Wix partner, come find me and David for all your burning dev questions and don't miss our workshop on Wednesday!
Got a conference acceptance this morning! I've only applied to two so far this year so feeling good about that ☺️
Will announce which soon. I think they are still sending out approvals.
Got a new sticker while I was in Oregon. Speaks to my love for the tech and Open Source community.
If you are familiar with Portland, any guesses where it came from?
Hint: Doesn't have anything to do with tech but you might see a dev working in a place like this
Another first for me, guest speaking on a Twitter Space.
Great experience and I learned so much from all the speakers.
Thank you to
@FrancescoCiull4
for the invitation. It was fun.
Check the thread for some of my favorite takeaways on Public Speaking for Developers
My face when
@FrancescoCiull4
joins the livestream!
What a fun time chatting with
@eddiejaoude
and the community. We saw so many great profiles and repositories.
A few takeaways to polish your profile in the comments....
Is it weird that debugging is one of my favorite tasks?
It's so satisfying to figure out these puzzles and my learning increases way more during these exercises.
I had a fantastic time giving two four-hour workshops at
@renderATL
today! Thanks to all (almost 100!) of you who came to either the morning or afternoon session.
If you missed out, be sure to check out my course on the same topic: Building Influence for Engineers and EMs!
Do you know the difference between an API and an SPI?
Catch my session tomorrow at
#DeveloperWeek
to learn all about it and see how
#DevsOnWix
can use them to build custom eCommerce experiences on Wix with Velo.
⏰Thursday 2/16 9am PST
I want an option in Google maps to pick the walking path with the most shade to my location. I think with a warming planet this will quickly become a useful feature outside of my selfish desires.
Hire me
@googlemaps
so I can build it for myself and the world. Thx.
I had the honor of being the devrel rep/MC for our first session and just wow! Excited to learn from all these folks.
Great questions and conversation and it's just the beginning!
Remember to always check the contribution guide before submitting a PR to a repo you are new to. Many repos do not accept PRs without opening/vetting an issue.
You might find yourself doing extra work that isn't needed and are creating a headache for maintainers.
Hardest decision I made today? Santa hat or reindeer horns for my
#FestiveTechCalendar
submission.
Can't wait to share this session with you all next week. Mind/Body reboots for the overworked dev coming soon...
Not all devrel travel is conferences!
For the past few months the team I have been working with has been curating developer webinars and workshops all supporting the launch of
@WixStudio
for a worldwide education tour and next week I get to go be a part of it!
A few weeks ago
@CodesChrissy
wrote a post lamenting about not being able to find many women led projects in Open Source. While looking for a resource to send her, I realized I couldn't find anything comprehensive and up to date so I started one and am slowly building it out.
Thank you again to everyone who attended my session yesterday and again to the organizers of
@jsconfbp
My slides are included in the next post. If we didn't get to chat and you want to keep the conversation going, my dms are open
Best part of going to conferences is being gone just long enough that you get the "I thought you were dead" level of greeting from your dogs.
Very happy to be home 💜
@TreciaKS
My first job as a dev was for a government contractor. And imo it comes down to no one able or willing to spend the money to modernize UI/UX until absolutely necessary. We were always bound by the terms of the contracts.
Do I code on Saturdays? Only for LinkFree and the EddieHub community. Come join us as we start building an exciting new feature.
Help us from the chat. Seriously, the camera decreases my skills by 75%
Do you want to level up your Open Source?
Join me and
@hey_amandam
as we build a fullstack feature LIVE for LinkFree and you can also get involved!

Have to give a shout-out to
@jsconfbp
for having hands down the best coffee experience of any conference I've been to.
Hired local baristas to make custom espresso drinks from Espresso Embassy.
Had to stop by to show them some more love and get beans and an affogato. 💜
Submit the talk.
Reflecting on the conversations I had after my talk on reframing the way we talk about devs as creatives. I was not prepared for this idea to deeply resonate with so many people.
I submitted to a few cons not expecting it to be picked at all and it wasn't... 1/
Me booking the early morning flight - wow. What a good plan Amanda. Really killing it.
Me the night before the early morning flight - what is wrong with you? Why would you willingly get up this early? Do you like being a zombie?
As dev advocates we are often the first place complaints go. Even before a support ticket is opened. We are very public and it is draining.
The dms I get from developers thanking me for listening to them, letting them rant, and taking action as I am able really keep me going.
First ripe blueberries! Still having some trouble getting the soil pH low enough. Thinking by next year I'll have tons 💜
They are delicious. I'm so excited.
