Today’s cut will be welcome news for millions of homeowners and shows that Labour inherited a stronger economy which was on the right track.
In government, we took difficult decisions that cut inflation from 11.1 per cent to the Bank’s target 2.0 per cent paving the way for

“We warned that Labour will raise taxes - and now they’ve admitted to it.
The public will not forgive the biggest betrayal of any Chancellor at their first budget in modern history.”
Extraordinary admissions from BMA junior doctors committee co-chair:
🔴 Confirmed strikes over last two years were linked to the general election.
🔴 Don’t regard huge 22% rise offered by Labour enough.
🔴 Plan to strike again in 12 months for more.

I am heartbroken that Rachel Reeves has chosen to abandon the cap on social care costs.
After years of political disagreement about social care, we had at last achieved a consensus - this was in the Labour and Conservative manifestos.
This is a monumental betrayal.
Hard to find the words for the true horror of the Southport attack.
My thoughts are with the children, the adults hurt and all their families.
And thankful to the emergency services who responded and everyone caring for those injured and affected.
Labour have made a political choice
To scrap transport investments, cut winter fuel payments & raise taxes.
And instead set up an energy company, drop welfare reforms & give junior docs a 20% pay rise.
They should have been honest and told people before the election.
Public finances are open and transparent.
It's simply not credible for Rachel Reeves to say she couldn't see the open books in front of her.
Labour always planned to put taxes up - they just chose not to tell people.
'I think what Labour's doing is setting out a narrative that's going to lead to them announcing tax rises.' -

Just as we feared - looks like the unions already have the upper hand over Labour.
Passengers want affordable and reliable trains, and for that we need reformed working practices.
Sadly it looks like Labour have already caved.
First the Chancellor, now the Prime Minister.
Labour once again refusing to commit to the biggest transport investment in the north and midlands' history.
It's not just Teesside that ought to be worried ⬇️
TAKING TEESSIDE FOR GRANTED
The Prime Minister refused to commit the £1 BILLION to protect our local transport infrastructure guaranteed by the last Government.
Our transporter bridge, new transport hub for Teesside retail park and upgrades to Thornaby Station are now at risk.
Labour's manifesto didn't mention cancelling Network North…
…but as soon as the election's over they've refused to commit to it 👇
This £36 billion of vital transport infrastructure matters to people and they deserve to know what's going on.
Despite a global pandemic and energy shock, our economic inheritance to Labour is:
👷♀️Unemployment halved since 2010
💷Inflation at 2% target
📈Growth currently highest in the G7
I hope someday Labour hand over the same to their successors.
Driving isn't a luxury - it's something millions of families and businesses rely on.
But Labour are marching on with their plan to turn it into one ⬇️
Hammering working people won't modernise our transport system.
I'm honoured to be appointed Shadow Secretary of State for Transport.
Scrutiny is essential to good government and I look forward to providing it.
Top of my list is our Network North plan for £36bn of vital transport infrastructure in the UK. Scrapping it would let people down
