This is what we were all created to do. It is the door to real happiness in this life. But even more than that. It's the door to never-ending happiness forever after we die.

I heard Shaykh Rateb al-Nabulsi remark, "If you learn God's commands without getting to know who He is you will try to figure out how to escape from them. But if you gets to know who God is, you will immerse yourself in discovering His commands so that you can do all of them."
Barbarossa was one of the greatest sea-warriors of the Muslim world, ever. This is his insignia. Note what appears to be the Star of David. This used to be a Muslim symbol.
Tomorrow I will, for the first time, be sharing the technical kalam ana mantiq insights that I've gathered over the past two decades working in the field of rational arguments for the truth of Islam.
This is Harvard Yard. The real legacy of every civilization are its institutions of learning. I pray that Allah restores Muslim institutions of learning to the glory of their past. They have the best arguments in the world. That's what the Why Islam is True course is based on.
Alhamdulillah, we had our first class on the Muwatta of Imam Malik. Masha'allah one of the students is memorizing the Muwatta and he began class by reciting the first 3 hadiths with isnad from memory. We then learned how the narrators in the isnads are the story of the hadith.
Tonight is the eve of the 15th of Shaban in Turkey. Based on reliable hadiths and the widespread practice of the first three generations of Muslims (salaf), the majority of scholars of four schools said it is recommended to make dua, to pray, and to make dhikr during this night.
I attended a beautiful Turkish mawlid last night with my family and friends. My friend remarked that no matter which part of the world you go, you will always feel at home and a sense of belonging in gatherings of people who are remembering, loving, and celebrating the Prophet.
Yesterday I presented a kalam critique of William Lane Craig's famous Kalam Cosmological Argument. He takes the shell of the argument from the mutakallimun but then departs from them on several significant points.
All of the madhabs teach us that (a) it is sunna to dress up for the prayer and (b) that the imam should be well-dressed because the followers will be more accepting of him being their imam if he dresses well. It's refreshing to see imams in Turkey do this.
The Muwatta is earlier but Bukhari is more authentic - Why?
Western historians judge the reliability of a historical source by how early it was. But when you have isnad, the early-ness of a source doesn't matter.

The Diyanet (Turkish Ministry of Religious Affairs) has an excellent new edition of the Tafsir of Abu al-Su'ud (may Allah have mercy on him) — the Shaykh al-Islam in the time of Suleyman the magnificent. His tafsir is my favorite tafsir and I use it all the time. See comments..
Alhamdulillah I arrived in Malaysia, slept for a couple of hours, and then left shortly after fajr to teach an intensive on Kalam 3.0 for madrasa students and teachers at Madrasah al-Hikmah in the tropical village of Negeri Sembalan.
Paul
@freemonotheist
and I had an enjoyable conversation about Imam Malik through an analysis of the isnads of the first two hadiths. Contrary to popular belief, isnads can be a lot of fun!

Parents, here is a meaningful way to speak to your kids about pets after we all die.
We can tell them that Allah says, "They shall have everything that they desire in it (i.e., Paradise), and We will give them something even more." (Quran, 50:35)

I taught a seminar today on how to prove the existence of God to about 200 bright and talented alimiyya students at Darussalam in Chicago. May Allah Most High bless their teachers and make the students shining lights for our umma.

I'm grateful to Shaykh Tameem Ahmadi for personally bringing a copy of this latest Nur Publications book for me to Istanbul. It's an excellent and beautifully produced translation of Mawlana Thanvi's most important manual of tasawwuf with important scholarly notes and appendices.
Beginner students of kalam and philosophy often think that Ghazali and Hume have similar positions on causation. That's a mistake. They couldn't be more different!
I had a wonderful conversation today with Paul Williams
@freemonotheist
on the Quranic Design (QD) argument and the need for Muslims to be careful in the way that they engage with the Christian Intelligent Design (ID) argument.
I’m excited to welcome the first cohort teachers who will be getting trained to teach Why Islam Is True. There are only a few spots left and our training starts this Sunday. If you are interested, this is a great time to join. I will be working closely with the first cohort.
Students of my course often ask me for supplementary readings to further develop their ability to respond to atheist arguments. From now on, I will recommend that they read "The Provenance of Man" by Tahseen Khan.
What makes the new Why Islam Is True course different?
Its been completely redone! The videos, real world conversations and refutations to atheists are out of this world.

What he claims about the Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace) and the Lady Rayhana (Allah be pleased with her) is a complete and utter lie.

Very happy to meet my old friend Shaykh
@tabrazeazam
today in Uskudar. We caught up on life and he gifted me a copy of the hot-off-the-press Volume One of the Journal of Hanafi Studies, a platform that combines madrasa scholarship with modern academic scholarship.
The real cause of all corruption is identified in this hadith.
We finished the first chapter of the Muwatta in yesterday's class. It was such blessing to be among people who came from all over Istanbul to learn about the Prophet ﷺ.
.Pls see the comments for more👇
A guest on the recent PBD podcast said some terrible things about the Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace). Here is a first response. More to come.
It was a pleasure to be at the Cambridge Muslim College this past Monday, to meet their staff, their students, their beautiful premises, and to deliver a lecture on Reclaiming the Kalam Cosmological Argument from William Lane Craig.
Muslims built an advanced government regulated public hospital here in Europe. At the same time, treatment in the rest of Europe was unregulated, painful, and superstitious witch-doctor medicine. The Bayazid II Health Museum in Edirne is a must-visit.

I talked to Paul yesterday about how the mutakallimun tweaked Ibn Sina's argument to effectively re-express the Quranic argument from contingency that they were already using. He also asked an important question about Ghazali, Ibn Sina, and takfir.
I received a signed copy of this wonderful little book the day before yesterday from the ten-year-old author Husain R. Banna
@mimarhusain
. Yes, you read that right — the author is ten years old!
It was great reconnecting with Shaykh
@TabrazeAzam
this morning over breakfast. Masha'allah he is a talented, good-natured, and down-to-earth scholar of Hanafi fiqh who is doing great work
@IrshadCenter
. He liked my recent video on Imam Abu Hanifa and requested more.🙂
The Ottomans were a civilization of Islamic scholarship. Walking through the Edirne Museum of Islamic Art helps you imagine what life was like in Ottoman civilization.

Istanbul is one of the most beautiful cities in the world. Its beauty isn't a "natural" beauty but a contingent attribute made by God. That's why we say, "alhamdulillah". (Contingency central to our faith. Watch this if you haven't done so already. )
Imam Ahmad reported in his musnad that the Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace) said that Allah Most High turns to everyone on this night and forgives everyone except someone who obstinately disputes with other people and has ill-will towards them (mushahin) or a murderer
The Quran teaches us to believe in God based on evidence and it makes a very particular argument for the existence of God. I had a wonderful and stimulating conversation with Paul Williams around this on Blogging Theology.
To Allah we belong and to Him we will all return. This week I have had three reminders of my own return. May Allah have mercy on my departed neighbours and may He help us perpetually keep our final return before our eyes so that we make choices for that life, not for this one.
My article on Islam and extraterrestrial life has recently been published by Bloomsbury. It's the first article in "Islamic Theology and Extraterrestrial Life" edited by

and

One of Wisnowsky's important contributions in his "Avicenna's Metaphysics in Context" is that it was the mutakallimun who influenced Ibn Sina, not the other way around!
I'm excited to announce this 6 week course on the most important part of advanced books in the kalam tradition. It's taught by my teacher Shaykh Talal Ahdab, who has also quietly taught many other teachers of the traditional Islamic sciences. Register ↙️
The 1 habit of highly successful people. There is a reason why some people don't find success. They are looking for it in the wrong place. "Come to success!" Every day the muezzin calls us to become successful people.
I talked about what I think is the most significant point of departure, which enables him to use the kalam argument to affirm the divinity of Jesus, something that any kalam scholar would consider to be in complete contradiction with the traditional kalam argument.
Did you hear?
InshaAllah I will be speaking at the annual Islamic Philosophy Conference this weekend. It's hosted by The American Society of Islamic Philosophy and Theology held on the Harvard University Campus.
The late Shaykh Abd al-Rahman al-Shaghouri (d. 2004) in his youth. He was a humble man who frequently cited the words of Shaykh Ahmad al-Rifai, "May I be raised up with Pharaoh and Haman if I place myself as a Shaykh above you." May Allah Most High have mercy on him.
This used to be a Muslim symbol. They called it, "The Seal of Solomon". It used to be on the Moroccan flag, too, until the French changed it to a five-pointed star.
As the Muslim lands were colonized a hundred years ago, Shaykh Yusuf al-Nabahani wrote this beautiful dua in which he called on Allah by His beautiful names to relieve the suffering of Muslims and restore their dignity and honor and safety.
The largest mosque in Turkey (the Buyuk Camlica Mosque) was inaugurated in 2019. It was designed by two female architects. It's full of symbolism. My favorite is the 72 meter high dome which symbolizes the 72 nations that used to be under the umbrella of the Ottoman empire.
Every week, we spend time studying the lives of the narrators of the hadiths in the Muwatta. It's such a beautiful experience. It makes you feel like you are living with the Companions and the early Muslims, may Allah Most High be pleased with all of them.
Alhamdulillah, I resumed my weekly Muwatta class today in Uskudar. One of the hadiths was narrated by Zayn al-'Abideen Ali b. al-Husayn b. Ali b. Abi Talib. We spent some time learning about his inspiring life.
Alhamdulillah, I had a wonderful time with a group of intelligent young men from universities across Istanbul. I explained how to apply traditional kalam arguments to modern atheist objections in my first Why Islam is True class at the Uluslararası Genç Derneği this past Tuesday.
I had the pleasure of meeting Mulla Saaleh Baseer in Istanbul a couple of months back and just came across his wonderfully eloquent and erudite article on the Dars Nizami recently published by Darul Qasim. A must-read!
Before Islam, Aristotelian philosophers analyzed the universe through the lens of potentiality & actuality. Ibn Sina changed this. He was influenced by the Quran, he moved from potentiality & actuality to an analysis of the universe through the lens of contingency and necessity.
Two of my younger sons are having trouble memorizing Surat al-Jinn. So I gave them a tafsir that (I hope!) was exciting. Jinn stories always spark interest and questions. ("Are genies the same as jinn?")
I'm with my family in Edirne. It was the Ottoman capital before the conquest of Constantinople.
We came to see Mimar Sinan's masterpiece, the Selimiyye Cami. But when we arrived we found it was under renovation!

Today is my last day in Chicago. It has been exhilarating. Lectures on kalam, science, critical thinking, reviving the madrasa tradition, Muwatta, sayyida Aisha, female scholarship, thoughtful and insightful questions. May Allah bless the students and teachers

A random fa'ida for kalam-specialists from Shaykh Talal Ahdab's presentation at the ASIPT conference: he said that the proper spelling of Baqilani is like that with one "l" (i.e., no shadda on the lam) not Baqillani with two "l"s as is most people think.
What you should do in the month of Shaban!
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ used to fast most of this month - his wives thought he fasted the entire month. He always did more than was obligatory and his meals were simple; dates and water. May we strive to follow his beloved example.
A beautiful photograph of an imam in Turkey playing with children after salat al-tarawih. There is a wise adage in Turkey that says, "If children aren't making noise at the back of your mosques then worry about your future."
All great scholars had teachers. Knowledge doesn't come from the teacher. It comes from Allah SWT. Imam Abu Hanifa used to say, "I reached what I reached, by praising Allah SWT. Every time I learned something, I praised Allah SWT & He increased me in my knowledge."

1 Part of Allah's Remarkable Mercy!
Did you know that Allah's mercy is divided into 100 parts. He keeps 99 parts for Himself and sends down 1 part to us. From this 1 part it is how we humans and animals have mercy amongst each other - like this mother horse and her colt.
The late Shaykh Shukri al-Luhafi was a leading scholar of the 10 canonical recitations of the Quran who lived an exemplary and inspiring life. Here he is listening to a beautiful nasheed that describes the spiritual experiences of worshiping Allah at tahajjud.

Once when he was asked about his father's expertise in hadith, he avoided answering the question and said that his uncle Abu Suhayl was a high-quality narrator of hadith (thiqa). Imam Malik applied the highest standards when selecting who to narrate hadiths from.
I am overjoyed! A Why Islam is True teacher had the happiest day of their career. An outwardly religious student shared her atheist past, and told how the clear arguments in the WIT course restored her faith. Every Muslim student needs a teacher to give them this education.
I was walking by the Selimiye Cami and met an imam. He was a wonderful man who had studied in Damascus & al-Azhar. My teachers all learned in those 2 places so we immediately connected. He recommended that I visit the maqam of Hazrat Hasan Sezai (d. 1699). More ⬇️.
Thank you
@freemonotheist
for hosting me yesterday in a conversation about the difference over the significance of miracles in Christianity and Islam and how that leads to differences in their arguments for the existence of God.
The sharia was proof that Islam is true. Now it's the other way around. My goal in this course is to turn it back the other way. Limited seats available for this course. There's a two hour live class every week. Only this one time. Starts this weekend.
I enjoyed listening to the distinguished panels of speakers at the Ummatics conference. I gave the closing remarks for the day with an explanation of the role of the Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace) as mufti, qadi, and imam.
Children at Çamlica (the biggest mosque in Turkey)
Çamlıca Mosque is beautiful. Schools here organize field trips for young children to pray at the mosque and then hear a kid-friendly lesson on the mosque in Islam.

Preparing for my seminar this evening at al-Khalil Academy on "Kalam vs. Atheism". I will insha'allah explain how the scholarly tradition of Muslim seminaries such as al-Azhar and Deoband is uniquely positioned to give the most effective responses to atheist arguments today.
