I finished this book in one day because it was so good. It masterfully explains how Ghazali blends different types of knowledge – empirical, logical, and mystical – into a coherent whole. Outstanding scholarship. A must-read! I will definitely integrate this into my courses.
Alhumdulilah. I finally got my second PhD in Theology (
@YourStMarys
). Thanks to
@SSBullivant
for everything he did to facilitate this.
If Allah wills, one more to go.
THE BIG NEWS
On this blessed Friday of Ramadan, I'm thrilled to share that I have accepted an offer to become a Lecturer of Science and Religion at the School Of Divinity (
@uoedivinity
), New College, University Of Edinburgh (
@EdinburghUni
). I aim to commence my new role in
When I started practising and learning about Islam (during my first PhD), Ibn Taymiyya was my go-to resource, and this was one of my first books. I don't subscribe to the Taymiyyan framework anymore, but I definitely have immense respect for the man.
As an avid reader, it's rare for me to encounter material that I consider exceptional. This is, without a doubt, one of them. It discusses how the Islamic world was able to domesticate ambiguity as opposed to eliminate it.
Part 1
I just read this book, and it is truly a masterpiece. I wish I had had something like this when I started practising and learning about Islam more than a decade ago. It's a really good introduction to Islam.
I just received my UK visa. I will be relocating to Edinburgh on July 20th to start my new position as a Lecturer in Science and Religion at the School Of Divinity, New College, University Of Edinburgh (
@uoedivinity
). insha'Allah.
Cleared out all my books from my office today. Two loads of these trolleys were jam-packed into my car. These books are on philosophy of religion, Islamic philosophy and theology, and philosophy of science.
I received an impressive 4-book reading stand from eBay today. The trays and holders securely hold books and allow for easy page changes. I recommend it to fellow bookworms, academics, and teachers. It's large, and the photo doesn't do it justice; I included my hand for scale.
Paul (
@freemonotheist
) and I did a myth-busting video last year to show that al-Ghazali never rejected or shunned science/philosophy (). Given the resurgence of this claim, particularly in some Urdu-speaking circles, I decided to share the video. May it be
I have finally settled in Edinburgh, alhamdulillah. Today, I will be recording a video with Paul Williams from Blogging Theology (
@freemonotheist
). We will discuss our passion for books and our reading approaches. Super excited and hope it will benefit everyone who watches.
My first article on AI and Islam is out. I want to thank Indiana University Press' (
@iupress
) Journal of Islamic and Muslim Studies for inviting me to write this short piece to stimulate the discussion.
Yesterday, we had a massive storm here in the UAE, complete with thunder and heavy rain, which isn't something we see often. These kinds of storms can sometimes flood homes. My office, which is basically a shed, ended up getting flooded too. I have around 5,000 books in this
At long last, it has arrived! My first book of 2024. A heartfelt thank you goes out to my co-editor,
@JMDetermann
, and all the contributors who brought this volume to life. The topic covered in this book promises to spark some fascinating discussions!
#TheTruthIsOutThere
The basic point of the secular in the modern West is to "liberate" certain pursuits--the state, the economy, science--from the authority of religion. This is also assumed to be the goal and meaning of "secular" in Islam. Sherman Jackson argues, however, that that assumption is
In 2010, during my first Chemical Engineering PhD, I attended my first-ever lecture on al-Ghazālī and the Iḥyāʾ ʿUlūm al-Dīn by Shaykh Kamaluddin Ahmed. It marked my start with the Nottingham ISoc and my journey into Islam. 13 years later, I own the complete Iḥyāʾ. SubhanAllah!
I am currently drafting a 𝐩𝐨𝐬𝐭𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐝𝐮𝐚𝐭𝐞-𝐥𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐥 𝐜𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐬𝐞 on Islam and Science. To gauge interest, 𝐰𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐭𝐨𝐩𝐢𝐜𝐬 𝐰𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐥𝐢𝐤𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐬𝐞𝐞 𝐢𝐧 𝐬𝐮𝐜𝐡 𝐚 𝐜𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐬𝐞❓ Please mention them in the comments.
I am happy to announce that I was just awarded my second PhD in Theology by

A huge thanks to

During this special month of Ramadan, I am pleased to share that I have completed the initial draft of my translation of 'The Commentary on The Preliminaries to Islamic Theology' (شرح المقدمات) by Imam al-Sanūsī. Throughout this year, I plan to refine it further and incorporate
On my return flight to Dubai, I completed reading Sherman Jackson's 'The Islamic Secular.' This book stands out as remarkable and potentially transformative in various fields, though its interpretation of 'secular' may lead to misunderstandings, with some considering it a
I studied Arabic with these books. May God have mercy upon him, and may he shine on the Day of Judgement with the immense benefit he brought learners of Arabic throughout the world.
Just listed the 10 books on Islam & Science that most influenced my journey. 📚 Reading them left me deep in thought. Some may not agree with my picks, but remember: this is about what shaped my perspective, not necessarily my endorsement. God knows best. 🙏

A YouTuber called Jan Ryczkowski did a video on Islam and Evolution, garnering over 110,000 views. The impressive part is knowing that he is a 16-year-old Polish convert to Islam and does an excellent job simplifying my work. Mind-blowing!
This is one of the best English texts on the history of Islamic theology, the six pillars of faith (أركان الإيمان), and the contemporary landscape. The last chapter makes a case for why Islamic theology is needed today more than ever.
𝐆𝐎𝐎𝐃 𝐍𝐄𝐖𝐒❗
I am happy to announce that I am now on the editorial board for 𝗧𝗵𝗲𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗦𝗰𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲, one of the top two journals of Science and Religion in the world.

This is the School Of Divinity, New College, University Of Edinburgh (
@uoedivinity
), my academic home, where I will be researching and teaching Science and Religion. Alhamdulillah!
After a 100-page discussion on cosmological arguments (KCA and contingency), al-Rāzī concludes that design arguments resonate much more with the Quran and avoid the deep intricacies associated with contingency and KCA (square brackets are my addition to help with the meaning).
My top 10 Philosophy of Science books was a tough selection, given the wealth of excellent options. I've chosen books that have deeply impacted my personal growth, though my list might change with my recent book acquisitions. I trust you'll find this list valuable!
The final shipment of books from Egypt arrived today, the same day the logistics company picked up my entire library for Edinburgh (see the empty shelves behind). Operation 'Move to Edinburgh' is now in full motion. Alhumdulilah.
Due to frequent requests, I will be recording a video featuring a discussion between Paul Williams (
@freemonotheist
) and myself about our book-reading methods. We'll share the techniques and tips we use. It promises to be an enjoyable and insightful session. If everything goes as
Back in Dubai to find 100+ book deliveries waiting for me. A huge thanks to
@mszarepour
for working on the edited volume (left), and Nabil Yasien Mohamed for asking me to review his monograph on Ghazālī's epistemology (right).
I was informed of the passing away of Shabbir Akhtar and Ronald Numbers. Both of them were brilliant scholars and impacted me through their works.

Indeed we belong to God, and we shall return to Him.
Someone messaged me saying that a sister converted to Islam after having read my work (evolution was a big obstacle for her), alhamdulillah!
Jummah Mubarak!
These books—amounting to 170 kg after packing—are now on their way to MEEF Library, a free multi-purpose library for the people of Melapalaya, India. May God accept it from all involved.
A funny conversation between my wife and the owner of a trusted logistics company.
Wife: My husband has 6,000 books and needs them shipped to Scotland from Dubai.
Him: Is he a bookseller, or does he run a library?
Wife: Neither. These are his personal books.
Him: 😱
I have just completed my collection of Naquib al-Attas' works by acquiring his commentary on Ḥujjat al-Ṣiddīq, which came with a prologue. This commentary is extremely rare (and thus pricey), but I am thrilled to own all of Al-Attas' major works now. This will be invaluable for
What was one of the first things I did when I arrived in Edinburgh? Find accommodation? Nope! Enjoy the Scottish 'summer'? Not that either! I had a 2-hour conversation with Paul Williams (
@freemonotheist
) about how to read a book! Enjoy :)
Today, we started reading Islam's Quantum Question for my book club. The first chapter set a really good tone; we will see how the students navigate the ideas to come. We have an exciting 11 weeks ahead of us.
Here’s a little motivation boost from one of my dedicated students, a speech pathologist assistant. Alongside her 8–4 job, she’s juggling multiple courses, including some with me. Below is a snapshot of her current reading material. Let this inspire you to keep pushing forward in

I first encountered The Reconstruction several years ago, as it came up in many circles. At the time, I found it to be a disappointing read and felt I gained nothing from it. However, 14 years later, two key insights have prompted me to revisit the book. Firstly, I've realized
I cannot emphasize enough the importance of Abdul Sattar's post. While I strongly encourage reading—books hold a special place in my family—it's crucial to be realistic about one's lifestyle and reading expectations. I often get asked how I manage to read so much, and one of the

asked me what books I would recommend for teaching A-Level philosophy. Without any doubt, it's this set by Jeremy Hayward, Gerald Jones, and Daniel Cardinal. Generally, you can't go wrong with Hodder Education for A-level books.

Though I listened to and read from many contemporary scholars/instructors, four people in particular profoundly influenced me during my upbringing and education in Islam:
1. Nouman Ali Khan instilled in me a love for and thoughtful engagement with the Qurʾān.
2. Suhaib Webb
Exposition of the Proofs in the Basic Principles of Religion (تبصرة الادلة في اصول الدين) by Abū al-Muʿīn al-Nasafī is one of the maturest works of Māturīdī kalām. I've been looking for a specific critical edition published in Damascus more than 30 years ago, which is very rare
In 'Knowledge Triumphant: The Concept of Knowledge in Medieval Islam,' Franz Rosenthal notes that the Islamic civilization is fundamentally defined by knowledge (ʿilm). Any moderate time spent studying classical books makes this evident. As an example, this first section of تبصرة
I will visit my friend, Carl Sharif El-Tobgui, in Boston (flying there on Wednesday), who has kindly saved me a copy of Farid Suleiman's 'Ibn Taymiyya and the Attributes of God.' I am really looking forward to getting my hands on it.

We then chilled with

I've written a 10,000-word Introduction and an 18,000-word response article for 𝙏𝙝𝙚𝙤𝙡𝙤𝙜𝙮 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙎𝙘𝙞𝙚𝙣𝙘𝙚, summarizing my book and engaging with 9 academics. It's a challenging project, but I hope it benefits the community. It will come out soon, insha'Allah.

On my way to Tehran, I start reading this. It's an excellent work. It gives each position its due by providing clear presentations of strengths and weaknesses for each perspective.
I've been guiding students through Sanusi's preliminaries to Islamic theology, and it's been a fascinating journey. Typically, our sessions last around two hours, but yesterday's class extended to an engaging two hours and forty-five minutes as we delved into the third and fourth
I just realized that all my classes this past week were about God's existence (see below). What a beautiful way to enter Ramadan. Alhumdulilah. May God accept it from us.

Yesterday, we had our fourth class on proofs for God's existence. We compared cosmological design arguments and biological arguments. In the midst of that discussion, a student brought up this verse. I am sharing it here for wider benefit.
