I spent the last two weeks in Cuba! Unfortunately, so much misinformation circulates about the island every day. But if the situation in Cuba was actually hopeless, all the propaganda by US media wouldn’t be necessary. So here are some things you should know about Cuba 🧵

vacationing in Hilton Head or any of the sea islands is an act of violence against the Gullah Geechee people. Black/Indigenous people’s well-being will always be more important than your island dream, whether it’s SC, PR, or Hawaii

Their ancestors formed the first town of freed people in the U.S. Now, the Gullah Geechee are being forced off their land as tourism takes over.

There are infinite reasons why the Black freedom struggle and Palestinian freedom struggle are directly linked, and I wanted to share some of them bc I think many Black people (especially Black USians) are more quiet about Palestine than we ought to be. (1/6)

Oh, and 70% of scientists in Cuba are women. Scientific inventions there aren’t powered by money, but the actual needs of the people. What a concept.

Speaking of COVID, because Cuba knew that they wouldn’t be able to access many of the global vaccines due to the US blockade, scientists there created 5 COVID vaccine candidates. Now, Cuba has the highest vaccination rate in the Americas and their vaccines work on anyone over 2

The 1960 Cuban Literacy Campaign resulted in a 99% literacy rate for adults today (the US has a 79% adult literacy rate with 54% of adults reading below a 6th grade level). At the start of the pandemic, the government worked to broadcast televised classes tailored to all students

Cuba has the most doctors per capita in the world. They send doctors abroad for every major medical crisis. The country has about 30,000 doctors abroad at any given time. After Katrina, Cuba offered to send a medical brigade to the US and President Bush rejected it.

Cuba has a near-zero homelessness rate. This is due in part to the fact that rent in state built housing is capped at 10% of family income. The average lifespan in Cuba is higher than that of the US and they have a lower rate of infant and maternal mortality as well.

Cuba is classified as the most sustainably developed country in the world. The government encourages people to grow their own food on their patios and a significant portion of unused state land is used for growing crops. Cuba is also home to one of the last intact coral reefs.

Today, over 50% of parliament seats are held by women. Also over 50% of teachers at institutes of higher education are women. Cuba also has one of the most generous parental leave policies in the Americas, and has begun offering social benefits to grandparents raising a child.

All of this is DESPITE a 60-year US economic blockade that prevents the island from accessing food, technology, basic resources, and even medical supplies. Last year only the US and Israel voted against the UN call to end the blockade for the 29th year in a row.

Cuba has had several constitutions since it’s independence and also a Family Code which covers legal obligations regarding marriage, divorce, children’s rights, and gender equality. The people (children too) shape both documents through a democratic, public consultative process.

@cynfinite the ingenuity of granny midwives. I recently read about the career of Margaret Charles Smith, who delivered over 3500 babies in Alabama and never lost a mother. She once saved a 1.5lb premature infant by making an incubator out of a cardboard box and hot water bottles.

Just got off my paternal grandmother’s 90th birthday party zoom and I’m feeling incredibly grateful to have two living Black grandmothers over 90 (who both got to see great grandchildren). Child-elder relationships are beautiful and not to be taken for granted when you’re Black.
