Excited to share our article just out in @BJPolS #OpenAccess. The first meta-analysis of the evidence of a causal association between economic #insecurity and #populism provides a definite answer confirming that economic insecurity is a robust cause. @ManuSeral @alexdmoise @DrMcNamara @davidstuckler @GUQatar The literature on populism is divided on the causes. Several recent narrative reviews report weak association at best. Although we found significant heterogeneity in several dimensions, all studies reported a significant causal association. A recurrent magnitude was that economic insecurity explained around one-third of recent surges in populism. We statistically tested for publication bias and found significant evidence of it. However, the causal association between economic insecurity and populism remains significant after controlling for it. Economic insecurity seems particularly relevant for explaining right-wing populism, while the results for left-wing populism appear more ambiguous. Altogether, the existing scholarship presents enough evidence to conclusively disperse any doubts about the causal role of economic insecurity in the populist backlash against globalization. Denying the role of economic insecurity is a position that cannot be defended. Of course, this does not mean that cultural factors are not important. Culture can mediate the role of economic shocks or might even be an independent primary cause. But juxtaposing economy and culture is less productive than exploring their interactions. The literature search took place early/mid 2022, which means we could not cover some new studies. We do cover, though, everything we found in the three biggest academic databases and on Google Scholar. Feedback, comments, or questions are welcome! Just had a fantastic conversation with @marysdesk for @Slate’s What Next podcast! We unpacked the chaos of #Trump’s first weeks back in power and the hard lessons from Viktor #Orban's Hungary about the future of #liberalism and #democracy in the U.S. Hungary’s opposition made critical mistakes, but that doesn’t mean the U.S. is doomed. My American friends, you have more reason for hope than you might think. But liberalism needs a fundamental reset. You don’t protect democracy by safeguarding institutions or delivering normcore lectures on values. Democracy survives when democrats protect people from the power grabs of economic and political elites. You don’t need to convince people to care about democracy, they already care about their lives. Democrats need to listen and hear again. We should prove that democracy is about improving people’s lives. They are crying out for help loud and clear. That cry should be the foundation of progressive liberal politics. If you want to learn how I see the stakes, the strategies, and the (mis)steps of resistance, give it a listen. 🎧🔗 @GUQatar

I’m thrilled to share that I’ll be giving the keynote at a symposium on #deindustrialization hosted by @UniofNewcastle next month. A huge thanks to @DrMcNamara and @caraleavey for inviting me—it’s always rewarding to discuss a topic that’s close to my heart. Deindustrialization may feel like an old story, but its effects are anything but outdated. The collapse of industrial communities continues to shape so many of the political and social challenges we face today, from #health #inequalities to the rise of #populism. It’s an issue that refuses to fade into the past, no matter how much we’d like to believe otherwise. This symposium brings together researchers who are digging deep into these questions, connecting the dots between history and the present. If you’re working on deindustrialization, there’s still a chance to get involved—abstract submissions are open for a few more days, and travel bursaries are available. More details here: @GUQatar

@ewaldeng Good morning... I have an impression that this "awakening" is taking place in other mainstream outlets, too. At least an increased willingness to consider this narrative, which they have so far mostly neglected. It might be too late, though.

Are you hungry for sharp political analysis rooted in social theory that fits our nearly-but-not-quite hopeless times? Then don’t miss this excellent essay by @CihanTugal on @LeftEast1 about the state of #left #populism. A hopeful insight from a grim reality: "The fading away of leaderless revolutions, the defeat (Western Europe/USA), or degeneration (Chavismo) of left-populist attempts increase the left’s demoralization. Yet today’s situation is far better than the 1990s, when the left seemed condemned to choose between new social movements or left-neoliberalism." 👉Read it here:

I was delighted to speak about #populism with @Nieuwsuur, the flagship program of Dutch public broadcaster NOS/NTR. Our conversation explored the #causes and #consequences of #radical #right populism, drawing insights from Hungary's experience as a laboratory of illiberalism. The interview, conducted in English, was featured in two Dutch-language programs, reaching over half a million viewers in The Netherlands. 👉 On December 27th, my interview was part of a broader analysis of global democracy, alongside expert commentary and a conversation with Anne Applebaum: 👉 On December 28th, an extended segment of our discussion aired, followed by an analysis of the Dutch context: Thank you @saskiadekkers for the engaging conversation. It's encouraging to see such interest in learning from international perspectives! @GUQatar

The transformation that followed left progressive civil society stripped of cross-class social ties and attuned only to college-educated sensibilities. Working-class communities have little influence over the agendas — or even the rhetorical styles — of progressive organizations.
As labor halls and civic spaces have vanished, progressive civil society has become a professionalized shell of its former self.
