@agrobaz Baz, if we could steer them in the right direction they could be useful.

@MartinMurray_Ag @OutlookAg On the southern end of Narran Lake. We are planting grain sorghum as the water dries back. The deeper section of the lake however, will not dry up until this time next year.

@scottburger00 @OutlookAg Scott, no fortunes to be made but not an expensive crop to grow given the season that unfolded. No effective rain from late January when the crop had been in the ground only 4-5 weeks. Still writing the rule book for reliable profitable dryland cotton in this part of NSW

@agrobaz @GRDCNorth @DrJasonCondon Great trial Baz. How many years will it run for? We have sampled red earth soils at 2.5cm increments and between 7.5-10cm we have a band that is between pH 4-4.5. This induces severe transient manganese toxicity in lupins. Lime incorporation to this depth will be the key.

@agrobaz @BradBaxter1985 @DrJasonCondon Baz, good to see a slide showing the south is not the home for chickpea! Better pulse options IMO and this chart illustrates this well. Not sure how many years this data is taken from however.

@sheepGeekCP Probably a bit late now that you have started but thinking if you treated the grain on the way in you can leave it there longer. Who knows what next season looks like but longerterm all off spec grain will find a market at the right price IMO

@neilschirmer I also think Neil that the SW slopes and particularly SE of Wagga generally has a great match of soils and environment to be very productive in addition to being a great spot to live. BUT you need to very competent at managing integrated production systems involving livestock.

@agrobaz @GRDCNorth @s_simpfendorfer Baz, since 2003 and the development of stripe rust as an annual disease issue we have adopted a preventative strategy. Simple, cheap and effective and yes whilst it possibly comes with consequences our wheat grain yields have never been higher on a WUE basis.

@johngbennett @McLellanShannon We would call that onion weed as per the second page in plants of western NSW as shown

@em_ayliffe Emma, in drier environments like ours and more so in drier springs the relationship between high pre flowering biomass and final grain yield is a slippery slope at the best. In my experience canola is as much about biomass from start of flowering onwards. Hope it goes well.

@bugs_are_us The numbers are simple. A cereal needs 110 day degrees to emerge, at a soil temp of 10 degrees C thats 11 days. Longer or shorter period if the soil temp is cooler or warmer.

@matt_norrie Very timely words Matt, thank you for posting. Let us all use the next few wet days to slow down and refocus on the important things in life.
