@questionableway Highbrow cinema is way more accessible than highbrow lit. The most difficult movies (e.g., Satantango, Shoah, Histoire(s) du Cinema) are ultimately very easy to get through compared to, say, James Joyce.

@questionableway I also think enough people are into highbrow cinema that thereâs some social pressure to push your boundaries. Which is awesome tbc. But reading is just so dead that outside groups of grad students youâre probably not going to feel left out if you havenât read X great book.

@agraybee People in liberal societies are tired of having to pretend to tolerate shit regressive societies do.

@decoyrobot This all just boils down to they gave Anderson $25m in 2007 dollars and Corbet just $10m in 2024 dollars. For months everyone was like wow how did they do all that for $10m?? I guess nobody wants to know how the sausage is made.

@ok_post_guy Iâve had very educated people tell me professors donât have free speech bc they got in professional hot water for praising Mangione. Like 90% of people are terminally stupid.

@constans 1. Three quarters of a million dollars is not âalmost a million dollars.â Maybe if people werenât innumerate theyâd have more money lol. 2. Being in the NICU is not âlying in bed.â If it were me Iâd be a little more grateful they SAVED MY KIDâS LIFE.

â âThe Masterâ is a fitting title considering that Paul Thomas Anderson is a masterful filmmakerâ - rando standing too close to me in the Music Box line.
when i saw the brutalist the guy behind me asked his friends "is the director of this someone we like?" and said "fuuuuck offfff" when they mentioned vox lux. later he started telling them about "this movie janine dilberg that was in a square aspect ratio" (it was jeanne dielman).

Wrong. They need to do the dumbest possible overreaction so guys like me who spend a lot of time tracking Oscars shit can have a nice time lol.
I donât think the Oscars can really do anything other than release a statement saying Karla SofĂa GascĂłnâs tweets donât align with their values and then just ignore her during the broadcast. Sheâs not winning and if the film does wins, politely ask (or pray) she doesnât speak.

I think itâs more that ATJ and Qualley are legit great actors and Sweeney is at best solid.
i think that what holds her back from achieving the status of other young actresses like anya taylor joy or margaret qualley, let's say, is how fragile she is in her identity. you don't have to prove that you're hot to the men who degrade you if you're 'caught' looking imperfect.

Americans stop being racist against Asians challenge level impossible.
If we adopted Asian grindset as our national ethos American cultural dominance throughout the world would immediately end. Almost nobody raised by a "tiger mom" is making good movies, music, writing well, etc. The computers are fast enough, we need art.

@constans âHOAâ has become such a bogeyman that I think there are a lot of people out there who have never owned (and likely will never own) a home who have incredibly strong (and incredibly incorrect) feelings about them.

I mean. I feel like you shouldn't throw a $60k wedding unless either (1) you're inviting a critical mass of people you know will splash out or (2) $60k is an insignificant sum of money for you.
Ok wait $60k for a 270 person wedding is actually completely reasonable if not a downright bargain? And the attendees only gifted them $11 on average? Iâm the #1 wedding hater and this is the first story where Iâm completely on the coupleâs side.

@coopercooperco Yup which is of course why Trump gets a pass on inflation. But the broader point being I think the best economy in history simply broke peopleâs brains, and I wouldnât be surprised to see jarring electoral swings every time an administration fails to live up to it (so every time).

I think itâs simply a generation and class divide. Itâs just catnip to well-off Gen X and up the way Challengers is to 30 year olds. And then people who are actually old (65+) are probably patting themselves on the back for liking a trans thing.
So seriously, what is the deal with this? I can't ever recall a bigger discrepancy between both critical and audience reception and awards-circuit acclaim. Is Netflix threatening voters' families??.

.@mulaney says his substance abuse issues were there in his comedy from the beginning, if anybody happened to look: âI very much tried to tell everyone.â. đ:

Iâve been listening to Robbie Williams all week. Pretty good! Weâre gonna see the movie.
I don't understand why so many Americans want Better Man to flop so badly. So what if you don't know who Robbie Williams is? Should that even matter? That just means you get to learn his story through this movie!. You're choosing to ignore all the praise it's getting out of spite.

@dissproportion The idea that social cost is always a subordinate concern to individual wants and needs. Or the idea that if the market were accessible directly by patients that would solve anything, as if insurers donât create economies of scale that benefit us all.

People love to get mad at this guy for stupid reasons.
I have to imagine that if I liked NICKEL BOYS enough to recommend it to someone else, I probably wouldn't pirate and distribute an underperforming film now in a crucial wide release after landing the nomination for Best Picture â but sure, this is also a choice

I also prefer living in the city but going to the store in the burbs is not a big deal.
Nothing sold urbanism harder for me growing up in suburban LA than when you just needed one thing (like trash bags), but needed to drive 10 min and be bored waiting at lights to get it. This meme can literally convert people:

@jpcsuka @questionableway Yeah I get the sense that a lot of people just donât like activities that lack a social component. Nobody reading used to bother me and now Iâm like eh, whatever, I like being alone for a couple hours a day.

Guy whoâs bummed itâs not Blue Thunder.
Christopher Nolanâs next film âThe Odysseyâ is a mythic action epic shot across the world using brand new IMAX film technology. The film brings Homerâs foundational saga to IMAX film screens for the first time and opens in theaters everywhere on July 17, 2026.

The dissonance is wild. Is it simply âWe are the party of College Degree Havers so any immigrant who might compete with them is Bad and anyone who will merely mow their lawn is Goodâ?.
Senator Sanders is right. We must stand against worker exploitation in all forms, be it American workers, workers overseas, or immigrant workers here in America. The ruling class wants cheap labor and will game any system to secure it.
