Italy is a similar size to the UK and its high speed rail (HSR) network has helped slash domestic flights. Arguing that the UK doesn't need or can't afford HSR doesn't stand up to scrutiny. We need public transport alternatives to short haul flights and long car journeys.

The Chancellor has today announced that 86 strategic road schemes will be fast-tracked in England. Construction is to start by the end of 2023. This will embed carbon emissions, air pollution and ecocidal car dependency. To tackle these, railways should be fast-tracked instead.

Too many local people are wasting too much time stuck in traffic jams in Aylesbury. At Prime Minister’s Questions, I told Rishi Sunak that we need the money now to pay for link roads. We've suffered from the construction of HS2, we deserve some of the cash saved by scrapping it.

The National Audit Office has said the government could need to “incentivise people to not travel by rail” thanks to the cancellation of HS2’s northern legs. This is the very opposite of what the climate and nature emergencies demand.

Hunt’s flight was from Heathrow, so at least 30 minutes from Downing Street. Manchester airport is another 20 from the conference venue. He will spend a very substantial amount of time at the airport. After all of that the plane is probably slower than HS2.

We will always need to transport freight, but how can we do this in a climate emergency? The answer: by rail. So what’s the best way to unclog our railways to facilitate this? The answer: shift the capacity-clogging expresses onto their own network. The answer is #HS2 .

A new study showed that M25 widening did not result in less congestion, but rather more people used it and quickly gobbled up extra capacity. The economic model to justify the investment relied on the promise of higher traffic speeds. “One more lane will fix it.” It never does.

We think @XRebellionUK 's opposition to HS2 is misguided. Safe, high-capacity rail powered by green grid electricity is part of the solution to our future transport needs, not part of the problem. A far better target is the government's 4000-mile road-building programme.

France bans flights where there's a rail alternative taking less than 2hr 30min. Our busiest domestic air corridor is London - Scotland. #HS2 will do that in under 4 hours, also adding hundreds of seats a day with its bigger trains. Enabling us to do the same for a huge CO2 win.

Absolutely! We need to build #HS2 in full so more people can travel by train instead of plane or car. Currently, our railways don't have the capacity to carry the increase in passenger numbers that there would be if train tickets were much cheaper.

those against HS2 talk about how we should focus on improving local transport. HS2 (in full) does exactly this. the reason local links in many areas aren't great is because there's no capacity to run them alongside intercity trains. HS2 and NPR solve this in many areas. 5/n

It’s unacceptable that HS2 is classed as an England-and-Wales project, just so the UK Government can avoid the ‘Barnett consequential’ of investing in the Welsh railway network. Better rail is needed on both sides of the border.

The @WalesGreenParty supports the expansion of the Welsh railway network. People travelling between north and south Wales shouldn't have to travel through England, adding hours onto journey times. For both climate and economy, the UK and Welsh Governments need to do better.
