Italy is a similar size to the UK and its high speed rail (HSR) network has helped slash domestic flights.
Arguing that the UK doesn't need or can't afford HSR doesn't stand up to scrutiny. We need public transport alternatives to short haul flights and long car journeys.
Ever wondered what Italian high-speed trains are like? After last week's trip to Italy, here is the best (I hope) guide you'll find to using Trenitalia's excellent Frecciarossas:
Here’s what HS1 looked like during construction, compared to today. 👇
Although it faced protest when under construction, the railway is now the transport mode of choice for the environmentally conscious.

The Chancellor has today announced that 86 strategic road schemes will be fast-tracked in England. Construction is to start by the end of 2023.
This will embed carbon emissions, air pollution and ecocidal car dependency.
To tackle these, railways should be fast-tracked instead.
If only there were an alternative rail route between London and Manchester.
One that's designed to be resilient and cope with more extreme weather.
Perhaps a high speed line to encourage more people to switch to trains.
We should really build this.
#BuildHS2InFull
Some Greens object to HS2 because of the damage it causes to important habitats like ancient woodland.
We thought we’d go and visit an HS2 site with both woodland loss and new tree planting.
A 🧵 on what we found … /1
We are
@thegreenparty
members, some elected, some not, who think we should support HS2 because it has a big role in a low-CO2 sustainable transport network for the UK in the 2030s and beyond. HS2 supports our sustainable transport goals, nationally and locally. /1
By scrapping both northern legs of
#HS2
, the Tories have stripped the North of new rail capacity in Manchester, Leeds and Sheffield. London-bound services will still clog up the existing platforms and railways, with no room for new local services and freight.
#NeverTrustATory
1/ I’m cancelling the rest of HS2.
In its place we’ll reinvest every penny in hundreds of new transport projects in the North, Midlands, and across the country.
That's a £36 billion investment. Every region bar London gets the same or more than under HS2, with quicker results🧵
🚄 || Would you support or oppose cancelling the portion of HS2 between Birmingham and Manchester, so high speed trains only ran between London and Birmingham?

Someone please tell him there’s a climate emergency.
A new underground train station in Manchester, which would link trains directly from

...But £1.4bn for *a roundabout* isn't. In a climate emergency.
Make it make sense.

"Cancel railways for the north to build more roads in the south" is a catastrophic policy for climate, air quality, public transport and regional inequality.
Cancel road building projects and
@StopRIS2
. Build HS2 in full.
Too many local people are wasting too much time stuck in traffic jams in Aylesbury. At Prime Minister’s Questions, I told Rishi Sunak that we need the money now to pay for link roads. We've suffered from the construction of HS2, we deserve some of the cash saved by scrapping it.
It’s almost as if the West Coast Mainline desperately needs a capacity upgrade.
Standing room only for the next few hours, after having paid an arm and a leg to get a ticket.
🇪🇸 "Rail now has a market share of over 85% compared with air on almost all corridors." in Spain.
🇬🇧 If only there were a partially built High Speed Rail route in the UK that we could finish, to help slash our domestic flights!
#TrainsNotPlanes
Cancelling HS2 means "higher fares and congestion for decades", as "passengers will have to be priced off the railways" to reduce demand.
@TheGreenParty
policies call for *more* rail travel and cheaper fares - this requires new railways, including HS2.
This is really troubling to hear. It’s been reported to the Green Party Regional Council that the Party’s current policy of opposing
#HS2
is one of the leading reasons for people cancelling their membership of the Party.
We’re working hard to change this situation. 1/n

🗳️ We urge
@TheGreenParty
members to support our motion "Green rail strategy for the midlands and the north" at our autumn conference in Manchester.
🌍 We're in a climate crisis: we need new railway lines to enable more rail capacity asap.
🛫 The government has approved London City airport expansion... in a time of climate crisis 🤯
🚉 We think prioritising clean, affordable train travel is a no-brainer. Labour has other ideas...
The National Audit Office has said the government could need to “incentivise people to not travel by rail” thanks to the cancellation of HS2’s northern legs.
This is the very opposite of what the climate and nature emergencies demand.
"The government may need to deliberately put people off travelling between Birmingham and Manchester by rail because scrapping HS2’s northern leg is likely to mean trains can take fewer passengers." -
Just build HS2!
This might surprise you, but scrapping the northern legs of
#HS2
affects you whether you live in Wolverhampton, Wales or Welwyn Garden City.
If the effect of HS2 on the existing rail network is unknown to you, this article is an absolute must-read.
Spain’s high-speed trains aren’t just efficient, they have transformed people’s lives
"A fiasco like HS2 could never happen here – our fast train network is so popular that no Spanish government would dare give up on it."
We understand that Phase 2b of

🇫🇷🇪🇸 France & Spain show it's politically easier to ban flights when there are high speed rail alternatives.
🏴🏴 London - Edinburgh/Glasgow is the UK's busiest domestic flight route.
#HS2
will cut journey times from London-Scotland from day 1 of Lon-Brum leg opening.
We often hear from Greens, including very senior ones, that
#HS2
is a climate disaster because it won’t be CO2-neutral for a long time. “120 years!” is quoted, “HS2’s own figures!”. One big problem with this: it isn’t true. Let’s take a look at HS2 and CO2... /1
Hunt’s flight was from Heathrow, so at least 30 minutes from Downing Street. Manchester airport is another 20 from the conference venue. He will spend a very substantial amount of time at the airport. After all of that the plane is probably slower than HS2.
The sooner we complete
#HS2
in full, the sooner construction disruptions to people and nature will end, the sooner ecosystems can recover, and the sooner we can replace short haul flights and car trips with HS2 journeys.
Let’s get it done!

We've said it before and we'll say it again: the cheapest way to build
#HS2
is quickly—and the sooner it gets built, the sooner we can reap the environmental benefits of electrified rail.
We will always need to transport freight, but how can we do this in a climate emergency? The answer: by rail.
So what’s the best way to unclog our railways to facilitate this? The answer: shift the capacity-clogging expresses onto their own network.
The answer is
#HS2
.
Rail freight is cutting Britain’s carbon footprint by preventing 7 million HGV journeys per year.
Each tonne of freight transported by rail produces 76% less carbon emissions compared to road. 🛤️⚡️🌍
“The government does not yet understand how the railway will now function”
We agree.
#HS2
was not meant to be just a bypass for the West Coast Main Line. It was to build new core capacity for the whole network, relieving three main lines at once.
Unfortunately, our motion to back rail in the Midlands and the North fell off the Green Party conference agenda. It didn’t therefore get heard.
It’s nonetheless clear that investment in rail and HS2 continues to gain support within the party. 1/n

So, as things currently stand, when HS2 opens to Birmingham, it's actually going to cause more congestion on the WCML going further north?
Longer lorries risk being a disaster for:

Want reduced fares and better reliability on our rail network? We're gonna need more capacity—more railways, more platforms, more stations.

A new study showed that M25 widening did not result in less congestion, but rather more people used it and quickly gobbled up extra capacity. The economic model to justify the investment relied on the promise of higher traffic speeds.
“One more lane will fix it.”
It never does.
We think
@XRebellionUK
's opposition to HS2 is misguided. Safe, high-capacity rail powered by green grid electricity is part of the solution to our future transport needs, not part of the problem. A far better target is the government's 4000-mile road-building programme.
Over 2,500,000 lorries.
That's how many lorries can be taken off our roads once
#HS2
is operational.
How? Zoe McLernon from Logistics UK explains... 👇 1/2
There has been a call to cancel

Green Party Policy TR244: “The Green Party supports the principle of a new north-south high-speed line which would reduce the number of short-haul flights within the UK.”

If HS2 gets cancelled now we will we miss out on the low carbon travel benefits of trains over cars&planes and it would make future road building more likely.
We’d have had all that habitat loss for no benefits.

Five new railway stations—this is exactly the kind of green initiative we need!
And it’s “linked to the completion of the

line which would free up capacity for more services on existing rail lines”.
France bans flights where there's a rail alternative taking less than 2hr 30min.
Our busiest domestic air corridor is London - Scotland.

We need to build

in full so more people can travel by train instead of plane or car.
Currently, our railways don't have the capacity to carry the increase in passenger numbers that there would be if train tickets were much cheaper.
Is it better to incentivise low-carbon travel, or get rid of high-carbon travel?
We need to do both: make trains cheaper AND remove the option to fly on certain routes.
Please sign our petition to ask the UK govt to prioritise low-carbon travel:

As members of

get used to its new position of supporting HS2, here’s a key point to bear in mind. 👇 We are now the party of a local transport revolution. ✊ 1/n
those against HS2 talk about how we should focus on improving local transport. HS2 (in full) does exactly this. the reason local links in many areas aren't great is because there's no capacity to run them alongside intercity trains. HS2 and NPR solve this in many areas. 5/n
As well as speed and capacity, building new rail lines such as HS2 increases resilience. If emergency repair works are needed on one line, passengers have alternative options to reach their destination.

Ditching the plane and the car are two of the very best things we can do for the environment, but people hugely underestimate the effectiveness of these changes. We need to make the green alternative—taking the train—the cheapest and easiest choice.
How do we achieve this? 1/n
It could not be clearer that we urgently need to decarbonise transport.
The UK needs a rolling programme of electrification for its railway, and prioritise modal shift of freight from roads to rails.
