operating doors around the north west and general train fanatic. loony lefty green party member. all views my own. i do youtube sometimes. alt text advocate.
everyone, this is a reminder to uninstall trainline. did you know that you can use the northern app to buy a ticket from brighton to dover? same with pretty much any other train company's app. just please, don't use trainline.
i am incredibly happy to announce that i have finished my route learning! (and i've been told that i'm the quickest route learner in the history of the depot so let's goooo).
tomorrow (and beyond) i will be out working trains on my own!!!
well today was special! first train on my first solo shift was 195108 on a service from manchester oxford road to liverpool. i was on 195s and 331s all day - hopefully my next shift on monday gives me some legacy traction for some variety 😅
now that we have successfully changed official green party policy to support HS2, i think a good next step will be to prevent messaging like this from (especially higher up) green party figures. 1/n

yes exactly this, having a sexual orientation that's different from romantic orientation is perfectly ok but the rest of it was just.... no
E01 passes (narrowly)!!!!!!!

now supports new High Speed rail for the north of England!
Thank you to everyone who has supported our campaign to change party policy.

today's been quite the shift. a signalling system fault brought piccadilly to a halt for almost 4 hours. i spent this entire time by the ticket gates helping passengers who didn't know how to get home. it was incredibly rewarding informing people, even if all i could (cont)
god, there is so much misinformation going around about labour's recent pledge to "re-nationalise" the uk's railways. as a rail worker and someone who is very pro public services being publicly owned, here are my thoughts 🧵
i have an exam today on everything i've learned so far in my conductor training (which is a lot). it's scary but my train to work this morning felt like a good luck charm - it was 323232! that sequence of numbers always makes me happy. wish me luck folks!
on the 29th of january, in exactly one month, i will be starting as a trainee train conductor, joining the lovely folks at
@northernassist
based at manchester piccadilly. this has been an extremely long time coming and i am beyond excited!!
@davwheat_
this is true, and before i got access to railstafftravel i used it extensively, but i only recommend it to those who are a bit more savvy due to the complicated nature of the uk's ticketing system.
i'm incredibly happy to announce that i am officially a qualified conductor! i've still got to learn most of my routes but the trainee part of my title is gone :)
*pictured is me with my feet up several hours after work
the result of having 2 coaches between sheffield and liverpool on an evening service. this country should be ashamed of itself. not East Midland Railway's fault, but a result of chronic underinvestment by the DfT.
@ElspethSummers
my mother paid for me to have laser hair removal on my face. she's given me some of her dresses. she responded amazingly when i came out, and she's had trans friends for over a decade. my mother would march in the street for trans rights with me. you're an out of touch bigot.

holy shit. i just got home (like 15 minutes ago) and i heard banging on a door. couldn't figure out where from for 5 minutes. it turns out that my girlfriend had been trapped in the bathroom for SEVEN HOURS because the door handle broke when she tried to leave.
i've officially completed all required trips for my core route (piccadilly to hadfield via glossop) so i decided to celebrate with a biscoff waffle from black sheep coffee!
next week i have my final competency assessment and if i pass, i can then work trains solo to glossop!
to address the actual claim here, HS2 *would* be a white elephant if it was just old oak common to birmingham interchange, but GPEW policy is to build it in full including the eastern leg & northern powerhouse rail, with several amendments to improve the delivery and results. 2/n
those against HS2 talk about how we should focus on improving local transport. HS2 (in full) does exactly this. the reason local links in many areas aren't great is because there's no capacity to run them alongside intercity trains. HS2 and NPR solve this in many areas. 5/n
it's technically not the 13th of april anymore as i tweet this, but april 13th 2024 marks one year of being on HRT. one of the best decisions i ever made. here's to many more!
some friends and i were having a conversation about dysphoria and it got me thinking about how much i've changed in 5 years (and how much happier i am for it)! so here's a 2019 to 2024 transition timeline. i think the look on my face in each picture says it all.
today is my final shift before 2 weeks of annual leave.... so what better way to celebrate by going to rose hill marple, hadfield, hadfield again, and then chester 😭 it's gonna be a long day
very happy that the sun has come out just in time for my long weekend :) back to trains on wednesday evening but for now, it's time for some much needed rest after my first week working trains on my own!
so again, it is really unfortunate that a green party lord is allowed to freely present this uninformed, simplistic view of HS2.
i agree with many objections people have about how the project is currently happening. one way or another, though, it needs to be built. 6/6
today has been fun. i got to work a service to new mills central on what is the first day of the station being back in use after it was taken out of use earlier this year.
this is the face of someone who has just finished their last ever shift as an on-board host on EMR trains. it's had its ups and downs, but i've met amazing people while working there, all of whom i will miss.
i start my new job on january 29th. all will be revealed tomorrow!
while walking home, 2 shirtless men with beers walked by me and said "oi, are you a bird? are you a man?"
like i am a stranger just trying to get home from work. why are you asking me this
@IAmZackHayward
yes you did, transphobia was built into the manifesto. good on you for calling it out but you don't get to distance yourself from it if you campaigned for labour.
one amendment is for higher scrutiny on HS2 and requires a net biodiversity gain. another explicitly calls for capacity release to be prioritised for local/regional services and rail freight. the final one calls for HS2 to be reclassified as england only 3/n

yeah, no. my mother's not ace but she's split attraction. some of my friends are the same. it is perfectly ok for anyone to be romantically attracted to a different demographic than they are sexually attracted to.
as opposed to england and wales, which would result in wales being compensated under the barnett formula. these combined transform the current mismanaged HS2 project into a green, useful, high speed railway, which this country desperately needs more of. 4/n
Only a small number of young people are prescribed puberty blockers. Those who are often describe them as life-saving.
I know the distress the puberty blockers ban is causing them.
No matter what happens in court, I will continue fighting for the government to scrap it.
the 45p train is great but jesus christ - the author bought the ticket on trainline and therefore had to pay a 59p booking fee as well. just buy on a TOC app! you could save over 50% on your ticket!

she says she can't afford an electric car. not completely implausible, and doesn't completely rid her of hypocrisy, but still, electric cars are very expensive and the main drivers (pun not intended) of climate change are big companies, not middle class people.
freight is also staying in private hands according to labour. essentially, that means that this massive groundbreaking announcement boils down to.... very little, actually. very little will become "publicly owned" that isn't already that way in practice.
ok, so: for the most part, private companies are not in charge of running our railways. they are contracted by the government to run services, and they receive no ticket revenue for this - instead they are paid directly by the government for the running costs + a small %.
i'm genuinely in awe at how many people have followed me in the past couple of months as i've settled into my job as a conductor. it really means the world, thank you all so much
@ClimateDefiance
@ninaturner
rough calculations in my head say that's an extra 10²¹ joules of thermal energy in oceans. will get a calculator out in a second. either way, that's a mindboggling figure.
AQA to teachers: tell them that catalysts speed up the rate of reaction.
AQA in the exam: what does a catalyst do? Do not say it increases the rate of reaction.
Thanks AQA.

in the rush to cram as many passengers on trains as possible (for profit), TOCs have abandoned the idea of having enough space for all these people to put luggage. the result? ridiculous levels of inaccessibility. it's ludicrous.
so just from this alone, you can see that a huge portion of the uk's rail network is publicly owned. one of the issues is rolling stock - this is largely owned by private companies called ROSCOs. labour have *not* said that they will change this.
my jobs in order since this seems to be a trend now:
paper..... person - 2.5 years
walkers factory - 3 months
covid tester - 1 month
train catering trolley person - 9 months
train conductor - starting today!!
hire more staff, order new, reliable rolling stock, and lower ticket prices to increase ridership. i think this will happen - but not to the extent that is needed.
so, to those who say that labour's plans are excellent, and to those who say they amount to nothing

i am happy, i just find the contrast between hank's usual tweets and his tweets today entertaining. my original tweet was a joke. i am a leftist living in the uk, so i often find US politics funny, when it's not depressing.

the problem with that is a lot of state leaders will base minimum wage off of what works best for the companies and billionaires that fund them. everyone needs a 15 dollar min. wage. it should be much higher is more expensive places, but a federal minimum is a good thing.
