three people came into the gelato shop and after the first two ordered, the last guy didn’t get anything and for some reason i thought it’d be funny to say, “designated driver, huh?” anyway that joke did not land and now i’m so embarrassed i might need to quit my job
no sympathy for anyone who says that there’s “nothing to do” in nyc and then clarifies that by “nothing to do” they mean “i’m ruling out any activity that requires me to figure out how public transit works in the city where i live”
This is what happens when you come to nyc without any interest to be part of a community bc you bought the romanization of city.
#NYC
is a city not a sitcom production set
Dua Lipa reveals Tove Lo and Charli XCX are two of the singers that she’s remained close with over the years:
“Those are just two solid, core girls who are really girls’ girls. Every time I hang out with [Tove Lo] I feel so energized, and I feel a real sense of comfort. It’s a
devastating news for the haters: we are making a beautiful and hearty roasted vegetable soup that we’re going to eat while we rewatch over the garden wall
MEMOIR OF A SPARKLEMUFFIN 🕷️
my second album, out 13th sept
feels surreal to finally be able to bring this world to you that i’ve been living in for the past year & even more insane to be touring these songs i love to much in the fall. supersad out nowww 💗
i do think that on some level at least, the taylor’s version series started as a statement about swift reclaiming her own artistic property, but also that that narrative was the perfect trojan horse for the ongoing project of giving taylor swift a near-monopoly on pop culture
i think the initial cultural backlash to Girls was really a result of ppl thinking all art by women is necessarily Confessional & a Direct Reflection Of Their Lives And Interiority
you guys using “espresso” to refer to any song that you think should’ve been an artist’s mainstream crossover hit is kinda giving “guy who’s only ever seen boss baby”
i’ll do everything in my power to conceal my phone screen when i’m shazaming a song because part of me wants even complete strangers to look at me & go “i bet she knows every song ever” & if they see me shazaming a laroux track in a coffee shop, the illusion is shattered forever
dating long-distance would be cooler if i had a phone with a squiggly cord that i could twirl around my finger while i talked, and if the phone part of the phone was a fun color and maybe shaped like a seashell or a car or a pair of lips
what are some songs that capture the feeling of like, the beginning of the second half of the summer when everyone’s going a little insane (not in a necessarily positive or negative way)? i’m making a playlist.
*james murphy voice*
i was there at the first mitski show at suny purchase
i was the first guy playing bright eyes for the soundcloud rap kids
CAR! SEAT! HEADREST!
people are being so weird about this, they’re a SUPERGROUP, the entire project is based on an understanding that they all have individual solo careers that they’ll eventually have to refocus on
the more i observe how fans of “sad girl” singer songwriters engage with the music and public personas of these artists, it becomes more apparent how much of that fan engagement is based in an expectation of female suffering
Lorde’s in her happy hippie era. Taylor Swift is in love. Phoebe Bridgers (possibly) happily engaged. Who’s making music for the depressed girls, gays and theys now?
the barbie movie was very much 2010s tumblr feminism 101 but you go into a blockbuster film about a mass-produced children’s toy expecting some sort of scathing, subversive feminist critique you’ve already played yourself
yall would not be able to handle amy winehouse if she broke onto the scene today, simply because she doesn’t sing in a high, breathy little bedroom pop voice
might be tinhatting here but listening to songs like "sympathy is a knife" and "girl, so confusing" i feel like we might be on the precipice of a pendulum swing away from the "girl's girl" brand of feminism that dominated 2023, possibly for the best
“rock” is music that makes you say things like “hell yeah this fucking whips” followed by an emphatic air guitar motion, “pop” is music that makes you say things like “go off, diva!” and “slay” and “yaaass”
“pop” and “rock” are not styles of music. they are audiences, and people use those words to describe music according to who they assume it was made for. just like “experimental” is an audience and “r&b” is an audience and “EDM” is an audience and “punk” is an audience
“the phoebe bridgersification of ethel cain” i mumble to no one but myself while pacing around my kitchen and ignoring the pot of water that’s boiling over on the stovetop
devastating to lose the man partly responsible for some of the greatest records of the last four decades, as well as this timeless piece of wisdom, rip
to keep clinging to this underdog narrative when you’ve been the biggest popstar in the world for the past 10+ years is so disingenuous and allows swifties to chalk any criticism of taylor up to sexism or “hating fun” or whatever
googled “kim rosenstock jeff rosenstock” on a whim because every time i see her name in the credits of new girl i wonder if she’s related to jeff and long story short jeff rosenstock’s sister wrote some of the best episodes of new girl
i’ve said this before but i would love for us as a culture to get to the point where a person can make valid critiques of taylor swift without them being written off as misogynistic
the verdict: good potential but a bit too starchy, the potato and bread overpower the onions. all the ingredients are really flavorful individually but when they come together, they don’t add up to the sum of their parts.
more bands should have openers who do something other than play music. i want the headliner to follow a stand-up comedian or a magician or a guy from the zoo who shows the audience a bunch of exotic birds.
you will never know the joy of watching some random metal band with 400 monthly listeners open for the mountain goats, knowing full well that you will probably never hear anything about them again
