We’re encouraged by @Apple ’s roll out their ‘global tracking control’ in iOS 14.5 and hope they extend the ability for consumers to exercise their legal rights to privacy (such as a CCPA opt-out) just as simply as they can technical mitigations like blocking device identifiers.

ICYMI: CA @AGBecerra clarified that #GPC satisfies the legal-requirement for a ‘user-enabled global privacy control’ under #CCPA … meaning that businesses are required to honor it as a valid opt-out! This is a huge win! CA citizens can opt-out across the web with just "1 click”!

#CCPA requires businesses to treat a user-enabled global privacy control as a legally valid consumer request to opt out of the sale of their data. CCPA opened the door to developing a technical standard, like the GPC, which satisfies this legal requirement & protects privacy.

NEWS: We reached a settlement with @Sephora for failing to disclose that it was selling consumer data, failing to honor requests to opt-out of sale, and failing to fix these violations. I hope this sends a message to businesses not complying with the #CCPA : CADOJ is watching.

A better approach for platforms such as @Apple and @Google is to support “Global Privacy Controls” that require App Developers to honor consumers’ requests to not to ‘sell or share’ their info… And importantly are *legally enforceable* by the State AGs/DPA in CA (and soon CO)

The effectiveness of these "privacy label" efforts are going to come down to how well the stated policies are enforced For example, how will @Google guarantee that these data are "Collected but not Shared" beyond an honor system? (applies to Apple too) That's the important Q!

Great point from @robinberjon “It’s important to understand how Web standards work: adoption precedes ratification. Calling GPC a “draft spec” may mislead people to think that its not applicable. That is not how this works.

The #CCPA regs §999.315(c)(2) states that businesses which collect personal information shall treat “user-enabled global privacy controls… as a valid request submitted [to opt-out of sale] pursuant to CA Civil Code § 1798.120” #CCPA #GPC is just that!

Good news is that on the web publisher side, adding @globalprivctrl support is only ~1 line of #JS if you already have the IAB CCPA framework that came out in 2019. (For brands, the #CMP integration for GPC will be out shortly.)
