To be fair, experimental psychology tried reducing minds to measurable tasks long before AI, computationalism, or even behaviorism: if AI’s already ‘corroding our self-understanding’ (Vallor), it’s because the seeds were planted by respectable science...

Compositionality in the brain? In sentences, the main driver of scalp EEG activity (N400, α/β oscillations) is the ‘meanings of the parts’, not the ‘syntactic mode of composition’ — w/ Lia Călinescu & Gillian Ramchand #lexicon #semantics #cutcompose

There’s still no free lunch, and perhaps lunch isn’t getting cheaper either: some useful things I’ve been reading and listening to about the ‘economics’ of DeepSeek ‘stealing OpenAI the data OpenAI stole from us’ @techreview

“While most policies embrace discovery methods of teaching, most cognitive science research in the experimental tradition still finds major benefits to situations in which the teacher spent much of the time talking to students.” 2/2

«The distinctiveness of local cultures is an illusion of scale. When viewed in the long term, their boundaries blur and melt into each other. But the consciousness of an individual or a generation is not capacious enough to span the deep temporality that human culture inhabits.»

«Intelligence used to be what machines could not solve, and as soon as it was solved by a machine, it no longer counted as intelligence. Now it is exactly the opposite: anything with machine learning in it is artificial intelligence, even buying gelato.» 🍨🎯

LLMs/FMs may be ‘possible minds’ that deserve study. But for those who seek explanations of cognition, they have little to offer. Foreseeably, they will leave cognitive science as it is: with no better formulations of what has to be explained and no better explanations of it. 4/4
