Truly grateful for my term as President of
@SMA_National
. The past 4 years have been incredible watching the organization grow and passionately pursue the mission of connecting academia to industry in the field of sport marketing.
I feel like every professor over the age of 40 says the same thing all day long…
“Just shoot me an email so I will remember to do ______________ when I get back to the office.”
Discuss this example every semester in my branding lecture....it’s amazing what companies like Apple and Starbucks can charge due to incredible brand loyalty.
I have so many male students say on the first day of class they want to be a professional sports GM one day. Can’t wait for my female students to start saying that now...
Representation matters.
NETWORKING TIP: Don’t be the person who only connects when you need something. Be sure to engage with folks consistently, support and give back with no agenda, and create a mutually beneficial working relationship. 🤝
This Covid year has been extremely tough, but just got a call that it is ending on a high note.....
FULL PROFESSOR!!
(Now, excuse me while I go pop bottles)

Texas to spend $40-$50M to replace coach Tom Herman. This comes at a time when Texas laid off 35 people within the athletic department, left 35 other jobs unfilled, put some workers on furlough and had nearly 300 employees take a temporary pay cut.
Just received notification today that I am the recipient of the 2020
@SMA_National
Sutton Award named in honor of
@Sutton_ImpactU
. The award recognizes a sport marketing researcher who connects academic work with the industry. I’m humbled and extremely grateful.
The NCAA says it organizes men’s and women’s basketball ‘under one umbrella.’ It also only lets the men’s college basketball tournament use the March Madness brand, and has withheld the phrase from the women’s event.
To my
#sportsbiz
students...if you think entry level jobs are beneath you, just remember, the most successful people in this industry started from the bottom and worked YEARS to get where they are today. Be humble and hungry.
Really excited to report that starting June 1st I’ve been promoted to Associate Department Chair, and I get the opportunity to help lead this incredible group of scholars in Kinesiology & Sport Sciences! 🙌
I am where I am today due to a lot of male mentors, allies, and supporters.
I am also here in spite of a lot of shit I’ve had to deal with being a female in sports.
BOTH have made me stronger.
Smile at someone you don’t know today. Speak to someone that’s not like you. Respect an opinion that’s different than yours. Make basic kindness a daily routine. Help others. Spread joy. It’s contagious and it makes a difference and we need it now more than ever.
I really wish
#Sportsbiz
job sites would stop using this type of marketing. Working in this industry is NOT about “watching sports from the sidelines.” It’s about business, plain & simple, and most times you’re not even watching your own games.
After two years of writing, just clicked submit on my first Sport Marketing textbook for
@Human_Kinetics
. Really excited to bring the 5th Edition to everyone next year and honored to continue the tradition for
@Sutton_ImpactU
Used my textbook for the first time in class tonight. One student noticed I was the author.
Student: Damn Dr. D you wrote the whole textbook?!?
Me: Not the WHOLE book, but yes, I spent the last 2 1/2 years writing.
Him: I guess we can’t complain about our 10-page paper then.

To anyone who thinks teaching is easy, I would encourage you to try public speaking for an hour with a mask on from behind plexiglass, giving an interactive presentation to 30 masked people in a room for 100, engaging a live-streamed audience, while being recorded and evaluated.
Sarah Thomas is set to make

history this weekend: She will become the first woman to officiate a postseason game. In her 4th season as an NFL official, she will work the Chargers-Patriots playoff game.

Being a professor isn’t always about teaching the textbook or preparing students for exams. Sometimes it’s about listening more than you talk and helping students navigate life. I find the non-school conversations are by far the most important.
Today I had a female undergrad student come into my office to meet with me because:
A. She’s a math/stats major
B. She wants to pursue her graduate degree
C. To work in sports analytics
My ❤️ was so damn full it almost burst.
More universities are adopting their athletics logo as the brand for the entire school, including academics. Smart branding move as athletics still serve as the front porch for most major universities.

Best thing I uncovered while cleaning the office. A pic of my grandmother and I on a blustery Texas day when I received my doctorate from Texas A&M. And her drinking a tallboy in the cab as soon as the ceremony was over!

My top two most unpopular opinions:
1. Candy corn is amazing
2. Pumpkin spice anything is nasty
People literally get more angry over these statements than politics.
Thanks for coming to my Ted talk.
The view as I enter the Merrick Building to start my 13th year at
@univmiami
. I always stop for a moment on the first day of class and say a little “thank U” to this incredible institution for taking a chance on a young PhD back in the day. I’m forever grateful. 🙌
Time for some personal news…
I AM EXPECTING!!!!
Meet Murphy, the basset baby, who comes home with me this Friday at eight weeks old. I’m in L❤️VE with him already. 🐾
Another “pinch me” moment in my career:
Each year, UM selects two faculty members to present their research to a university-wide audience during homecoming and lecture on its impact of a major current issue. I have been nominated and selected as a featured speaker. 1/2
Some personal news to share: I never thought I could ever accomplish this but the day has finally come. I have officially locked my keys in my car and locked myself out of the house on the SAME DAY. Thanks in advance for all the congrats and well wishes...
So a man is telling a woman with a doctorate to drop her title. Could you even imagine the mentions if this were in reverse?? As unreal as the WSJ piece seems, you’ll have a hard time finding a woman surprised by it, bc we deal with this shit ALL THE TIME.
Not the first time it’s happened, but still very rare. Student came back years after ripping me in a course eval to say he realized now why the course was hard - he felt prepared for/and was excelling in his first job in the industry.
New boat is powered up and ready for the Keys... I will be wearing a mask all week (with fins!) and the only thing within 6 feet will be 🐠🐠 and 🦞🦞

How will

effect enrollment at UMBC? It’s likely to provide a 30-40% surge in applications. FGCU saw a 27% increase and GA State a 28.5% increase after their tournament success.

Grades submitted. Year 1️⃣0️⃣ comes to a close for me at UM. It was a tough semester, but I am always grateful to be part of this special place and for the opportunities I am afforded here. Can’t wait to see what the next decade holds... 🙌 (📷

DAY 1️⃣ YEAR 1️⃣1️⃣ complete.
It’s a challenging time. It’s not easy teaching this way. But there’s still no place I’d rather be...Thankful for my job and my resilient students/colleagues and ready to make the most of my second decade at The U. 😷 🙌

by the numbers:
$1.13B - cost to build US Bank Stadium
$220M - cost of naming rights for US Bank Stadium
$4.9M - cost of city services to put on the game
$400M - estimated economic impact for Minneapolis
Best advice I can give my students is work for/with people that you respect, admire, and truly enjoy being around. You spend 75% of your life with your work family..... and I LOVE MINE!!!

A person once told my PhD advisor that I wouldn’t succeed in research because I liked to socialize, attend sporting events, and tailgate. Turns out I’m great at multitasking..... 🎓🥃
Today I mentored a student who is struggling with the

job search. One of the reasons I enjoy mentoring is that it’s a constant reminder to be very thankful for the job and opportunities I have in this industry that others are seeking. I never take it for granted.
I have reached the point in my journey as a professor that I find way more joy and satisfaction in helping others advance their career than I do in advancing my own. I guess that means I’m officially old.
LESS IS MORE: Golden State Warriors cut corporate partners from 109 to 70 with the move to Chase Center. In the process, they were able to grow revenue dramatically.

Student turns in semester project 5 days after the deadline apologizing “if I’m running a little late.”
I’m considering the following response:
“If you picked someone up from the airport 5 days late, would this be an appropriate response?” 🤔
My mom turns 74 today. She lost my dad when I was only 19, but she still gave us a great life and fought hard to rebuild a life for herself. I’m so proud of her.

When I wrote my textbook I only had one non-negotiable…a female athlete had to be on the cover. So I chose Serena and the image of her at the Miami Open. 🧡💚 🐐
Had a visitor in the office today...meet our newest

faculty member, Professor Morris! Our students are so fortunate to have the opportunity to learn from leaders in college athletics like this. 🙌
