I don’t do this. Never have done this. But my grandparents got in a bad accident this morning. Truck is wrecked. Grandpa is in Rochester, MN getting surgery, in pretty rough shape. Grandma is in Fairmont waiting for weather to die down to get there as well. I need prayers folks.
You know that 75 year old neighbor that told you he was going to retire this year back in September and give you a shot?
*checks grain markets*
He’s not.
In Sioux Falls. Order a coffee with milk. Get asked what kind of milk. I reply back, MILK. Guy at drive thru: we have soy, almond, rice, and dairy milk.
You only have milk. The other three options are knockoff juices homie.
A legit problem that is starting to happen for farmers under 1500 acres: used equipment is getting to be too worn, too spendy, too big, or all three. I’m not gonna pay 135 grand for a R series with 7000 hours.
“College is a waste of time”
“I went and learned nothing, should of spent money on something else”
Maybe you picked the wrong program or spent too much time in the bar?
Just a thought 🤷♂️
I’ll be devil’s advocate on this:
We all complain the USDA doesn’t have a clue what’s going on out in the country, but given the chance to give honest data we all throw the survey in the trash?
🤷♂️
I’ve made it through every President that was going to be “the downfall of us all” so far. Thinking I’ll make it through this one too, as well as the one after that.
Kind of impressed with the Successful Farming article on 21 young and beginning farmers. They actually outlined first generation and smaller operations. Nice to read an article about peers that isn’t “daddy rented another 2,000 acres.”
Saying that because a group hasn’t released a statement on an event means they supported it is BS. I don’t need the Cattleman’s or National Corn Growers releasing comments on what happened Wednesday.
I would like to present my ideas to why there is less/poorer estate planning in farming now. Maybe it’s never been that great, but this just my view point growing up in northern Iowa.
I believe autosteer has created this problem.
Once again it’s that time of year where I wonder how a junior in college can afford the 3rd all inclusive spring break trip of their college career without working a job.
Hot take: If you’re combining 28% corn and running it through a dryer middle of September in the upper Midwest, maybe you farm too much.
I’ll be taking no questions at this moment.
Local farm just got rented out @ $405/acre. This is why I hope some go broke. What’s the point of working just to lose money or at the very best break even?
Am I the only one tired of the “they wanted to return to the family farm, so their dad tripled the feedlot, built two hog barns, and rented another 1000 acres” articles? Going millions in dollars in debt just doesn’t impress me much.
Behind every farm that purchases a high speed disk there is a 24 year old that pushed for it so they’d get done in time for him to make both a Nashville weekend and the golf trip up north.
I’ve lived in Armstrong 29 years, can’t remember anyone hitting the trestle. Two different people get stuck with field cultivators in the same week. Can’t make this stuff up.
Northwest Iowa Cults:
- Girls constantly selling stuff on the Facebook market.
- Rich kids boating Tuesday- Saturday in Boji.
- 19 year olds with diesel trucks.
- Farmers.
- I can’t wait to leave this town, good vibes only *gets a drug charge*
- “Ranchy” barrel racer girls.
Inflation has apparently hit EVERYTHING.
EXCEPT the market for bred heifers.
I’m sick and tired of getting absolutely ripped off for quality cattle.
I can’t make this BS pencil out.
@GoddessofGrain
But Angie if I just work hard, talk to the older guys, and make smart decisions I’ll get opportunities thrown my way. Everyone wants the young guys to get going!
Said the guy in the elevator last year to me that rents his half section out to a fella farming 6,000 acres
Pro tip on navigating a crowded bar in a city: be 6’5” and 250 lbs while wearing your girlfriends purse. Sounds weird, but not a soul will mess with you.
Autosteer has really become a necessity to most farmers hasn’t it? Generation of kids coming up that probably have never had to hand steer while ripping ground. Kind of wild to think about.
Reading the replies to articles on the cattle in Kansas has really confirmed my thought process.
We can have as many “agvocates” with Instagram pages and throw as much money at ag associations as we want, but the message ain’t getting through. We’re losing this fight bad.
Somewhere a girl on her 4th year of a two year nursing program and in is a pyramid scheme is telling people she’s a “health professional.”
Don’t ever stop being you homie.
I get a kick out of peoples heads exploding every time there is a land sale in Sioux County. Don’t try to do the math, the math doesn’t matter. It’s a completely different world there.
Got offered some pasture. 180 acres, 25-30 miles from home. About 1/3 of it is a swamp. Good chunk of the fence is rough. But rent is very fair. I think I’ve made up my mind, but give me your opinions.
Preface: 180 is a lot in my area.
I truly have no idea who is going to win any election today other than the Emmet County Soil and Water Conservation Board.
I’m the only one on the ballot.
Spent most of the night helping pull pigs out of a wrecked trailer last night. We had a fire department and people from 3 towns helping last night. Don’t let anyone fool you, farmers care about their livestock.
My dad said something this morning that hit me hard. “I’ve been frustrated the last few days because in 98 I went through the demise of raising hogs and now I might go through the same thing with cattle. And the only thing I did wrong was not have 20 mill in equity.”
You can use a .45-70 gov to hunt deer in Iowa, but not a .243. Both can go 1,000 yards, though the .45-70 not nearly as accurate. Makes no sense to me. Am I wrong or right in saying just make all rifle legal for Iowa deer?
Folks, I’m gonna be deleting Twitter. There’s a multitude of reasons, but mainly social media doesn’t really help me get anything accomplished in the real world. With that being said, there’s a few of you I enjoy communicating with.
I just drove through South Dakota State University’s campus and asked these dudes if they went to SDSU they said yes so I asked for directions to tailgate and they said “we’re only 3rd cousins so it’s cool” I said dang you really do go to SDSU
Pro tip: flipping me the bird because YOU drive like an idiot isn’t gonna help anything. You’d think the whack jobs in rural areas would realize heavy equipment doesn’t stop on a dime 🙄
I’m genuinely envious of grain farmers that spend all day recreationally moving snow in an R series, while I try to keep the one path to the cows clear with a 4020 and 15 year old skidloader.
I bet we both think the other is mentally ill.
Grain market discussion on FB is 98% idiots and 2% good advice.
Glad I do most of my social media interaction on Twitter which is 90% idiots and 10% good advice.
PETA has a video of cattle in the Texas wildfires claiming if you go vegan this would be prevented. Friendly reminder to not QT or reply to it, as infuriating as that is. Only brings more interaction to them.
PETA is a terrorist organization that should be prosecuted.
Still wondering why girls from middle of nowhere Iowa/ Minnesota start acting like they're a Kardashian clone by their sophomore year of college. You were in 4H like 2 years ago??
Already own farm ground and trying to buy more but don’t want to spend your cash?
Tap into your equity, less cash for down payment is required.
Example: 80a you bought for $600,000 5 years ago is now worth $850,000 and has debt paydown of $89,000. Your loan to value on this
Every time I see a Farmers Only commercial I have to remind myself my life has not gotten to that low of needing an account on there, but I am probably about two years out.
Sometimes if I’m doing enough in life, if I’m succeeding. Saw on Facebook a girl that graduated high school with me that’s got a drug dealer baby daddy got completely different dudes name tattooed on her hand.
I’m knocking it out of the park.
A third truck or a second guy in a truck would sure be handy today. But also it’s oct. 4 and we got all the beans done. 20 days ahead of last year. Sometimes it’s easier to take your time and enjoy it!
I see a lot of people freaking out about turning their location off on Facebook and it’s an invasion of privacy.
If you really don’t want people to know your location, throw the whole phone away.
I see the possible ROI for majority of ag tech, but for the life of me don’t see it with a lot of planter tech. Has anyone truly seen a yield advantage or return? Willing to learn!
They cancelled the Iowa State Fair this year. My soul is crushed. I think I’m gonna move to South Dakota. Iowa you have nothing to offer me now. Time to follow the trail west.
My mom is the main combine driver, main book keeper, and the rock of our family. All I’ve ever known my life is strong women in ag and life. You don’t need specifically a boy to take over the farm.
You need heart and bullheadedness. That’s it.
We’ve been blessed with good landlords, but also have been told we’re next in line for a piece just to never get the call and see the BTO neighbor farm it the next year.
It’s 85% about the money in my area.
"... And then the land is sold to whoever will pay the most money."
I keep seeing this statement. I know it's not true because I've personally been blessed with a couple of opportunities.
I do think people might not realize how frequently such transactions are taking place.
I finally broke down and got in a discussion with a guy on the grain marketing page discussing rent formulas. I’ve hit rock bottom.
Side note: if a landlord wants higher return on investment, share crop or pay for inputs and I’ll custom farm it. Higher risk, higher reward!
Prices crash this week and all I’ve seen is “you don’t deserve a profit” “diversify” “we’ve seen lower prices” “don’t like it, get out” “get a town job”. And we wonder why ag has such a high suicide rate. Great support system folks.
