Google squandered its lead in AI to ChatGPT, and now perhaps to China’s DeepSeek. But mess around with NotebookLM, its AI research asst. A comeback lurks within. Makes me wonder whether the back end tech will soon become table stakes.

@RakeshSFNYC @om Difference here is that Gross has set it up so that content owners get paid every time someone does an Ai search and their content appears in results. It’s what content owners should have w Google 25 years ago. But they didn’t take Google or even the internet seriously then.

@balajis Re 1850 - back when life expectancy was half of what it is today, when 1930s depressions were regular events, when starvation was widespread, when the only people who could vote and mattered were white men? Do people esp big tech and Wall St. voters really want that?

@piersmorgan The vast majority of Jews and Nazis in the world think that’s what he did. So I’ll proudly wear your label. And you can wear mine: Nazi apologist. And we can go our separate ways. Fair?

Will AI make developers obsolete? No more than journalists. It’ll make us smarter. But it IS driving innovations in programs like Terminal - which many developers prefer, but amateurs fear. New tools like Warp and Ghostty are leveling the playing field.

Mitchell Hashimoto’s next chapter made me think about the entire developer tool stack, especially in the age of AI, and led to my latest article. If you are interested, continue reading A window into the AI (code) world, and explore how “terminals” fit into the broader revolution happening in developer tools, as AI transforms how we write and think about code.

At Google Jakob Uszkoreit became a father of modern AI. Now with $120 million, he’s using AI to reinvent biology - make drugs and vaccines cheaper/faster to produce and invent treatments never thought possible before. The latest from CrazyStupidTech.

@mmccue has been on the cutting edge of new media since I met him 15 yrs ago at Flipboard. Surf Social is his latest idea: Humans are better curating what’s interesting than algorithms. It’s a counterintuitive position today. My partner @om weighs in.

Can AI shrink the billions we spend developing drugs? BioPhy in Philly says "Yes." How? By helping big pharma better ID which of their compounds will succeed and fail. Only 1 in 10 gets approved. Sounds impossible. But big pharma is paying attention.

The internet is built on links. It’s the foundation of search and the browser itself. As AI chatbots atomize all that into streams of bespoke answers, will we one day soon even need an internet browser?
