New rules just down from D.C. gov:
* All nightclubs closed
* Suspending all bar seating
* Suspending service to standing patrons
* Tables and booths must be 6 feet apart and occupied by 6 people or fewer
Lapis, an Adams Morgan restaurant founded by Afghan immigrants, is collecting much-needed supplies for Afghan refugees. The Popal family posted a list of suggested donations on their Instagram:
Also, if you’ve never dined at

Went to a patio in Navy Yard tonight, and shocked/disappointed in the number of people walking around without masks, especially those coming into restaurants without them. Shows a marked disrespect for the people working at those bars, and their families. Do better, people.
Exciting/long-awaited news: 18th Street NW between Columbia and Kalorama roads is going to turn into a pedestrian zone one Sunday per month. Closure dates are Aug. 21, Sept. 4 and Oct. 23, between noon and 10 p.m. Zone will be operated by Adams Morgan BID.
I kind of don't want to tell you about this spot because it only has around 20 seats, but it's the coolest place I've been to in a while. 600 T is a snug basement cocktail bar with solid drinks, a chill vibe, and live jazz every Thursday from 8-11.
Update:
@TheAtlantisDC
says it received more than 520,000 requests for tickets for its first 44 shows, with less than 20,000 total tickets to distribute.
Winners will be notified on a rolling basis, with the process expected to be finished on Thursday. Good luck!

People tweeting angrily about how an anti-gentrification protest snarled traffic at 14th and U and ruined their commutes:
1. That’s the point of a protest.
2. Maybe just relax and enjoy Backyard Band? They cover Adele. It will be okay.

Breaking: Biergarten Haus is closing tonight, after 13 years on H Street. Staff found out today. Am told there’s a chance it reopens Sept. 1, but that seems iffy.

My latest: I've spent the last couple of weeks scouting for happy hours where you can get food *and* drink(s) for $10 or less combined. Not free popcorn - I'm talking pizza, half smokes, wings, tacos and tamales, plus discounted beer and cocktails.

General PSA: If any restaurant says they’re selling “Maryland crabs” right now, they’re either selling frozen/pasteurised crab meat or they’re lying. Maryland crab season opens April 1.

During the lengthy Big Board hearing on Friday, DC’s top epidemiologist laid out all the reasons why TBB operating without masks or proof of vax was a danger to the bar-going public. Today … none of those statistics matter anymore, I guess?
ABRA report:
It sucks to be alone with nowhere to go on Thanksgiving. Thankfully, there are bars that would love to welcome you for food and fellowship.
@lymanstaverndc
opens at 6 pm, food at 7.
@thepugdc
opens at 8 pm with 2 turkeys.
Feel free to add more in the comments. I will retweet.
Seems early to have to say this, BUT: If you are going to an $84 crab feast this weekend, you will not be eating "world-famous Maryland crabs." Maryland crab season legally begins April 1, and the good ones don't show up until the summer, anyway.

The big beer news at Nats Park is the debut of the Craft Beer Corner, a “grab and go” beer/seltzer cooler. (Three on the mezzanine, one higher up.) Decent selection of local cans, inc Aslin, Port City, Red Bear and Old Time.
Capitol Hill little free libraries are great because you’ll find cookbooks, Willa Cather and airport thrillers stashed next to titles like “Military Tribunals and Presidential Power” or “Terrorism and Counterterrorism: Understanding Threats and Responses in a Post-9/11 World.”

Cafe Mozart closing. Thamee closing. Park at 14th going on hiatus until March, beginning Monday. Truxton Inn postponing its post-holiday reopening "to a later TBD date."
Lots of bad news in the last 24 hours. Support your favorite spots this weekend, however you can.
There is no weirder feeling than showing up at a bar, asking the bartender about happy hour specials and being told that they don’t have any – even though I exchanged emails with the bar’s publicist about said happy hour.
Anyway, this is why I actually go to bars before writing.
Got a quick tour of the new
@Whitlows
(old Brixton) on Tuesday, post-Atlantis. Opens 6/6.
First floor is lighter, w/original Whitlows bar fixtures + shuffleboard.
Upstairs has large dance floor w/disco balls, will host bands, karaoke.
Roof has a beach theme, new satellite bar.
Received two iPhone notifications from the Dry January app asking if I had a drink today. Look, there’s a reason the app is called Dry *January*, not Dry While The In-Laws Are Here For Christmas.
Here's the news: Barrett Laurer, formerly of District Chophouse, is taking over as
@RightProperBeer
Director of Brewing Operations. I know that's not as exciting as an out-of-town brewery setting up in D.C., but I think it's a really good thing for the D.C. scene. (Short thread.)
It's early, and we're still collecting shutdown deals from bars*, but my favorite so far is $1 High Lifes (+$7 for pickleback or Spaghett) at

Terrible news from

Not trying to sound like a broken record, but don't assume any restaurants/bars are doing fine right now - even the ones who don't make pleas for support on social media.
Heard from two more business owners this morning who are getting ready to close "until next year."
Honestly, today has just been one of the worst days for so many people.
Take care of each other. Call friends and ask them how they’re doing. And tip your servers like they’re family over the next five days, because they are.
Annual reminder that Dec. 15 is the last day that blue crabs can be caught in the Chesapeake Bay until April 1.
Any "fresh Maryland crabcakes" on menus in the foreseeable future are probably pasteurized, frozen or imported from somewhere other than The Land of Pleasant Living.
Read this thread. Think about this thread. And the next time your takeout order isn’t ready when you get to the restaurant, or your delivery takes longer than expected, or an appetizer is sold out/missing, remember this thread.
In case anyone is wondering what it's like to manage a restaurant in the middle of a pandemic, let's talk about just my experience yesterday. Buckle up, all four of you who will read this, it's going to get a little long. 1/16
At a bar that has turned away some older-looking people who forgot their IDs. No, the bar is not being mean. Yes, you are bamas, and yes, there could be serious repercussions for a bar that lets you in without proof of age. Their liquor license > Your night out.
"Whether they work on or off Capitol Hill, Washingtonians tend to plan their summer schedules around that of Congress."
Can't decide if I should just stop reading now.
For those who weren't in DC in the late 2000s, it's difficult to describe how much the Gibson - no sign, the no-standing policy, incredible drinks served by some of the city's best bartenders - really changed the way people thought about cocktails and service.
Huge D.C. beer news:
@OtherHalfNYC
is opening its Ivy City brewery in October. Expect 20 draft lines; 12,500 square feet of taproom and patio (including a roof deck); and expanded space for barrel aging and lager tanks.
LOTS more on this as they get closer to opening.
Breaking news: National Arboretum will reopen June 8 "on a limited basis": Open Mon, Wed, Fri from 1 to 5 p.m., with a limited number of visitors. Bonsai museum and Visitors Center will remain closed.
On a sad note, Last Call near Union Market is closing indefinitely after tonight. They’re open until 10 pm. On Friday,
@PennSocialDC
announced that they were closing “for the foreseeable future.”
Said this so many times, but:

Huge loss for the D.C. beer community. 3 Stars had been doing so much work to bring people together, from plant swaps to live music to game nights.
Thinking of all the brewers, taproom employees, and everyone else who put everything into one of D.C.'s longest-running breweries.

Breaking: The Gibson is closing on Jan. 1. "Unfortunately, there are too many challenges to continue in its current form" says owner Eric Hilton in a release. He doesn't rule out continuing the cocktail program elsewhere or reopening in a new location in the future.
Just finished up the first round. This is very well done. I can see this format being used even in a “post-COVID” world. Festival goers post up at one table. Beers are brought to you. Each brewery rotates through every 15 min. Two hour limit. Haven’t noticed any drunk folks.
Here is one of the cards. It misspells "poses" and "The Americans with Disabilities Act."

I apologize but I feel like this is something you'd be interested in.
If there is ANY place in the whole of Washington that deserves a grandfather clause, it is Georgia and U, where people have been go-go crankin’ for decades.
I’m not a fan of gogo but the dudes down at Metro PCS on Georgia have stopped playing their music. Apparently, the new yt neighbors were complaining about the “noise”. Simply saying gentrification is sickening is an understatement.
NEWS! The
@USBotanicGarden
Conservatory reopens to the public April 1. No reservations or timed tickets necessary. Will also include a

On a more serious note: Mary McLeod Bethune has been in the news this week. I'd strongly encourage folks to take a tour of her Logan Circle house AND the free, NPS Ranger-led walking tour of the neighborhood offered on Fri-Sat.

The one difficult thing about the end of restrictions: Businesses that decide to ask customers to keep wearing masks are going to have to ask employees to shift back to Mask Police roles, which is not fun/easy to enforce. At least now they had the cover of "It's a city law."
Washington’s local mask mandate, one of the strictest in the nation since late July, will relax greatly beginning Monday, Mayor Muriel E. Bowser (D) announced Tuesday.
The Tune Inn has decided to close “until further notice” after the 23rd. “The city shutting down indoor dining leaves us no choice.”
There will be to-go specials on Xmas, NYE, and in January.
...
Okay, Atlantis-wise, I *think* these are the only shows with no ticket confirmations yet:
Darius Rucker
Bastille
Foo Fighters
Gary Clark Jr.
Maggie Rogers
Pixies
Portugal. The Man.
Spoon
The Head and the Heart
But then they'll probably send an email 5 min after I post this.
Walking past the

The girl dressed as the Frederick Douglass Bridge tonight could have taken as much Halloween candy as she wanted.
Dad and son dressed as a toilet paper roll and toilet were great, too.
Final count was +/- 600 pieces of candy on the Hill.

Few breweries offered home delivery before the pandemic. Now, it's a lifeline. A look at new platforms, a CSA for beer, and how delivery orders differ from what people were buying in bars and shops:
