Studying medicine was a dangerous affair. Between 1843 and 1859, forty-one young men died after contracting fatal infections at St. Bartholomew’s Hospital, before ever qualifying as doctors. Death was often inescapable for those trying their hardest to prevent it.

In earlier periods, surgeons sometimes died from "pinprick wounds" - a slight crack in the skin that got infected while operating or performing a dissection - since gloves & protective gear were not worn. Charles Darwin's uncle by the same name died in this manner.

Rebecca formed an allegiance with William Macewen. With him, she introduced the block apprenticeship programme for nurses and opened a preparatory school for nurses in 1893. This programme has been adopted worldwide.

Matron’s flat - under Dome on 6th floor - until last matron, Rachel Wylie, retired in 1987 & latterly accommodation for staff working in the hospital. Look at the wooden paneling 😍Previously Matron’s flat was in the nurses home & overlooked the ‘chicken run’😉
