FPGAs can combine multiple functions, but what good is integration if it needs flash and multiple power supplies to operate? Fortunately, not all FPGAs are created equal. The MAX10 FPGA can run from a single supply and comes with its own flash. It even has an ADC.

This is a classic, elegant circuit for switching to battery voltage. The MOSFET provides a low impedance path for more efficient operation when battery powered. The charging source can tolerate the diode drop for low current applications.
Here is a simple design that will switch automatically between a 5V USB input and a LiPoly battery. I hope this helps.
