This review would have been improved if:
a. The author had read the book.
b. They had avoided cheap shots about my dad's schooling/parents/hair.
c. They knew anything about my dad's journalism.
The Gazzetta dello Sport is an Italian daily sports paper - it seems to be entirely ignoring the women's World Cup. Search in vain on the website for any coverage at all, beyond the perfunctory. Quite depressing how marginalised women's football is in Italy.
Can I have Italian citizenship please? I lived there for twenty years. My grandmother was born in Bologna. My great-great-grandfather fought alongside Garibaldi. I suspect my Italian is better than Suarez's.
This is the BBC journalist Nicholas Watt being pursued by anti-lockdown protesters, and is a disturbing case study into where online radicalisation leads
Time for BBC series on Italy which ignores all food and art and vespas and goes straight for the bomb sites, war cemeteries, abandoned asylums and traces of fascism.
The violence in the UK over the last two days has not been ‘mindless‘ or ‘vandalism’. It has been targeted, planned, racist/fascist violence aimed at specific communities, their places of worship, and their businesses.
In the 1920s Mussolini - at exactly the same time - presented himself and fascism as the only party that could bring order to the streets, while promoting and carrying out violent, illegal, militia-led violence on those very same streets.
In academia victims of bullying often find that the institution denies that what happened was bullying at all, and the perpetrator carries on as if nothing has happened.
How on earth did Italy and Spain manage to build fantastic high speed train lines in a short time and in more difficult terrain than the (checks notes) chilterns? Clue: public ownership.
'The local University and College Union branch in Liverpool has asked me to take part in a branch boycott in support of 47 academic staff in Health and Life Sciences facing redundancy. Having spoken to union members I have withdrawn from the Ancelotti Q & A on Thursday 29 April'
I soldati della colonna di via Rasella (piu' di
150) erano armati e scortati, in testa e in coda alla colonna, da pattuglie
con mitragliatrici su motocarrozzette.
Really sorry we can't give back the stuff we stole years ago because you won't look after it properly. But if you insist you can buy it back on Ebay. Yours, the British Museum.
Italy has a modern anti-fascist constitution, a robust separation of powers, an elected head of state (by Parliament). These comparisons are offensive and ignorant.
Just the thirty years and counting of racist chanting at Italian football games. And still no solution. Still it continues. Still blaming the victim (s). Still looking for ways to not punish the perpetrators. Complete lack of leadership from clubs, fan groups, football bodies.
Also out on the 16 July - around the 20th anniversary of my dad's death (can't believe it is that long!!) this excellent new biography by Margaret Renn
Gigi Riva. Surely one of the greatest strikers Italy ever produced ... and a beautiful story with Cagliari which was unrepeatable. Another player from the greatest match ever (Italy-Germany 4-3) has left us...
Sven a huge figure in Italian football for decades. Much bigger legacy than his time with England (but you wouldn't know this from the British media). Should have won Serie A with Roma, won it with Lazio, and also a Coppa Italia with Samp.
Meloni says that the victims of the Nazi Fosse Ardeatine massacre were killed 'just because they were Italian'. Er. No. Many were anti-fascists, a large number were killed because they were Jews. Not all were even Italian. Ignorant and politically expedient take.
Typical question from Italian football journalist to manager after a match: so, at minute 33 you moved to a 3-4-3 and altered the press, why did you do that?
Typical question from UK football journalist to manager after a match: how did that feel?
My dad, for example, was a regular guest on Question Time (until he insulted an Admiral and was banned) but nobody that left-wing ever appears now... and yet these extreme right figures are regulars.
Italian state honouring someone who had no respect for the Italian constitution, constantly undermined the rule of law and the legal system... its an interesting one.
I made the mistake of reading all of David Starkey's article. It does contain this gem on slave trades. 'like any other sensible investor, they held a well-balanced portfolio of which the slave trade was a part'. A WELL BALANCED PORTFOLIO.
The whole 'small boats' 'debate' is taking place in a historical and political vacuum in which Britain pretends that there are no other refugees in the world apart from those crossing the channel.
We are heading full speed for disaster in universities despite constant warnings... I hope those who failed to heed any of this will resign and take full responsibility instead of blaming students or staff ... but I'm not holding my breath.
University managers have pushed, for years, a ridiculous 'business model' based around ever increasing numbers of high fee paying 'Foreign students' and 'internationalisation'. It has come unstuck in spectacular fashion. Are they displaying any sign of 'mea culpa'? Of course not.
A reminder that Berlusconi twice got the Italian parliament to vote for his immunity from prosecution, and these measures were both later overturned by the Italian constitutional court. We have seen this Trump stuff before. Berlusconi's rhetoric was exactly the same.
See how toxic university fees are? Constant discourse around £ rather than education in itself. Refunds, compensation and so on. Students seen as consumers not students. Lecturers as providers. Horrible.
Politically, Berlusconi rehabilitated the far right, and brought the Lega into government. A formidable election winning machine, with a terrifying concentration of media, business and political power.
A LOT of programmes about the rise of Hitler, on radio and TV, often with dreadful actor reconstructions of 'discussions' amongst Nazis. Nothing on Italy, where fascism was born and where it took power for the first time, and for twenty years.
Paul Foot, in ... 2001: 'Cronyism is a word recently invented by the Tories so that they can attack Labour for doing what Tories have done since time immemorial: appointing and promoting their mates to positions of power and influence'.
"I'm Marcus Rashford, 23-year-old black man from Withington and Wythenshawe, South Manchester. If I have nothing else I have that. For all the kind messages thank you. I'll be back stronger. We'll be back stronger."
