I worked on DEADPOOL & WOLVERINE last year on their first week back on set after the strikes. Being right behind the camera while this scene filmed was SO much fun.
It blows my mind that someone can be a part of making The Zone of Interest, only to be as ignorant as the people in the film, who designed for the audience to feel appalled by.
KILLERS OF THE FLOWER MOON is utterly exceptional & more gripping with every minute. An honest adaptation about the complexities of abuse faced by Osage Indians. Lily Gladstone is the soul of the entire film, delivering an astonishing performance with simply her eyes

POOR THINGS is a truly phenomenal adaptation that is both loyal & unrestrained. Emma Stone delivers an utterly enchanting career-best performance with Mark Ruffalo not far behind. This is Lanthimos operating at his very finest level of artistic expression
#Venezia80
Once again Wes Anderson proves himself to be one of the most talented auteurs of the modern cinematic era with ASTEROID CITY. A charming watch, with an all star cast at hand to support this very sweet pastel soaked Sci-Fi
#Cannes2023
SPENCER is an absolute triumph. With this creative imagining of an exclusive look into the personal life of the People’s Princess comes a powerhouse performance, breathtaking visuals and above all a heartfelt story about existentialism and harrowing tragedy
#Venezia78

Relived to report that the second season of LOKI is an exceptionally worthy & entertaining successor. The stakes are elevated from the moment we reunite with God of Mischief. Despite being packed with characters, old & new, everyone is granted an opportunity to be fully realised.
I’ll start out my thoughts on
#SheHulk
by saying Tatiana Maslany as Jen Walters is an absolute revelation. The first episode is a bit of a slow burner, but the show grows stronger with every instalment. The mid credit scenes are perhaps the most amusing ones in Marvel history.
Sofia Coppola’s PRISCILLA is a ravishingly twisted fairytale. An empathetic exploration into the darker complexities of love that never waivers from its protagonist’s perspective. Cailee Spaeny & Jacob Elordi approach their roles with an abundance of poise and nuance
#Venezia80
Indiana Jones and The Dial of Destiny is a great summer blockbuster. Though it could have been tighter in places & feels far less final than expected, I had so much fun seeing Harrison Ford reprise his role as one of the greatest cinematic heroes of all time
#Cannes2023
#GuardiansOfTheGalaxyVol3
is the perfect final instalment. A heartfelt story of origins & endings with the stylish flare that we already know and love. Vol. 3 is bound to cement the Guardians films as one of the best superhero trilogies to date.
Now that
#Venezia79
is officially wrapped up, here is the films I managed to see ranked. I will say that I’m quite proud of the coverage I completed and hope others were able to enjoy it. Until next year!
THE IDOL capture the glitz, glamour & exploitation of the music industry. Could be stellar if streamlined to be a story solely about artistic struggle and management interference without excessive sensuality. Undoubtably Lily-Rose Depp’s strongest performance to date
#Cannes2023
DUNE does manage to satisfy the stratospheric hype. Despite feeling like the starter in a three course meal, it skilfully balance it’s visuals and storytelling as well as it’s intricate characters. This is without a doubt Timothée Chalamet’s most captivating role yet
#Venezia78
#MsMarvel
is so much fun. It’s exciting to get a concentrated look at civilian life in a world full of heroes & the consequent stan culture. The Muslim representation is brilliant, adding depth to the story & Khan family for those who will embrace this glimpse into our culture.
I don't think I've ever typed so manically in my life but here it is, a recap of both Marvel & DC's Hall H panels at

Seated for Aronofsky’s THE WHALE. Looking forward to seeing what Brendan Fraser and Sadie Sink have to offer. Hoping for a real tear jerker!
#Venezia79
ANORA is superb. A complete powerhouse display from Mikey Madison. It is raw, a hell of a good time and dare I say some of Baker’s very best work. Mark Eydelshteyn delivers the breakout performance we’re going to be talking about all year long
#cannes2024
MAY DECEMBER features strong performances from Natalie Portman, Julianne Moore and Charles Melton in a story that is crafted to be as comedic as it is twisted. This is a film that will only grow richer as each layer is mentally peeled back post-watch

Had an absolute blast with HIT MAN. Glen Powell’s comedic chops are on full display, manifested in both his performance and co-writing credit. Powell & Adria Arjona share fiery chemistry that is off the charts. Undoubtedly the comedy of the year & a real crowd please
#Venezia80
Season Two of Loki is simply outstanding. This level of craft and storytelling happens to be even stronger than the initial series and is exactly what Marvel needs right now. I truly can’t wait to see the final two episodes. Read my full review:
I loved every single second of POOR THINGS. A film so saturated with talent in each individual department, bringing Yorgos Lanthimos’ impeccable vision to life. One of my favourite book adaptations to date and perhaps the best film I’ve seen this year
GRAN TURISMO has a surprising amount of heart. Though it struggles at times with vapid dialogue & directorial wobbles, it finds it’s feet eventually. David Harbour delivers a charismatic performance that holds the film together. Full review next week for

You know what day it is. The first press screening of DON’T WORRY DARLING begins in just over an hour. First reviews (mine included on

THE WONDERFUL STORY OF HENRY SUGAR perfectly captures the whimsical spirit of the short stories. The sets are meticulously crafted and dynamically choreographed, simulating a live theatrical performance starring some of the industry’s best talent. A true treat to watch
#Venezia80
MAESTRO is a solid but imperfect sophomore feature for Bradley Cooper. When it succeeds in storytelling, it lacks creative inspiration and vice versa. However, the final act is truly heartbreaking, with Carey Mulligan deliver a beautifully haunting performance
#Venezia80
Egyptian actor Sayed Badreya, the star of BAFTA winning British Short Film ‘Jellyfish and Lobster’ gave a short speech about having had to have played terrorists up until this short and is a reminder of what Arab performers go through in this industry. Brought a tear to my eye.
BLONDE has to be one of the most daring films in recent memory. It’s experimental nature is extremely unique and riveting. No matter how decisive this film will inevitably be, one thing is for certain, Ana de Armas is an absolute star. Full review below
TÁR is a wild & surprisingly accessible ride for those who know little about composition. It starts off slow, but finds a flow as it progresses. Cate Blanchett proves again just how remarkably talented she is & will surely have another Oscar nomination headed her way
#Venezia79
I truly believe DON’T WORRY DARLING is going to be an absolute theatrical hit. Stunning visuals and confident direction, topped off with an astonishing performance from the one and only Florence Pugh. Read my full review below

HOW TO HAVE SEX is a standout film early in the festival. Such precise direction from Molly Manning-Walker (AUB represent <3), impeccable music supervision and stellar performances from the whole ensemble

My first ever Cannes screening is ‘A Strange Way of Life’, of of my most anticipated of the whole festival, followed by a Rendezvous-Vous with Pedro Almodóvar and the cast.

Good Morning from Day 3 of

where we have POOR THINGS, FINALLY DAWN and AGGR0 DR1FT on the schedule for today. Reviews of all three to follow for

As a second generation Egyptian, I have always felt such a strong connection to Ramy Youssef and his show RAMY. Recently I had the privilege of talking to him for his first feature film role in POOR THINGS and his ongoing directing endeavours.
ANORA, my favourite film of the festival, just won the Palme d’Or. This marks the fifth consecutive time that Neon has taken home the top prize. This is a film that is wildly entertaining and outstanding on all fronts. My review for
@DiscussingFilm
:
ORIGIN moved me to tears. Ava DuVernay’s gripping script is an fusion of protagonist Isabel Wilkerson’s novel which investigates caste systems and the tragedies of her personal life. I found the final twenty minutes so immensely emotional.
#venezia80
Proud to finally share my interview with the wonderful May Calamawy. It was so special to sit down and reflect on our Egyptian heritage, Moon Knight and embracing our natural curls. Read the full interview:
FERRARI is good but not great. Penélope Cruz is outstanding, while Adam Driver delivers a perfectly serviceable performance. There are multiple breathtaking racing sequences, but at times the story is over shadowed by very poor editing and sound mixing choices
#Venezia80
POOR THINGS, my absolute favourite film of the year, is out in America today. Zany, entertaining and enchanting- this is truly one of the best book to film adaptations ever made.

If you are going to make a film like THE APPRENTICE during an election year it better be brave enough to dive into the deep end, this is not. Sebastian Stan does well to evade a caricature-esqe performance & gets better by the minute. Editing & sound-mixing are evidently rushed.
It’s so important to listen to Muslim voices when it comes to The Seed of The Sacred Fig and I think they’re getting drowned out. This review from
@farahonfilm
really nails my issues with the film.
Had the pleasure of stopping by the POOR THINGS exhibition at The Barbican ahead of covering the UK Gala for
@DiscussingFilm
this evening. Here’s a closer look at all the astonishing costumes!
I found a lot of emotion rooted in HOARD. A really strong directional debut from Luna Carmoon that deals with found families and the relentlessness of grief. Saura Lightfoot Leon and Joseph Quinn share an utterly infatuating chemistry
#Venezia80
Florence Pugh will NOT be at
#Venezia79
to promote Don’t Worry Darling tomorrow according to the Festival’s arrival list and press conference schedule.

THE LAST DUEL sees Jodie Comer shine once again. This tale is told in three chapters, each offering alternate perspectives and dimensions. The action sequences are nuanced and not too overwhelming, building up perfectly to the titular sequence

KINDS OF KINDNESS proves that Yorgos Lanthimos and Emma Stone continue to strike gold as a pair. A return to his more abstract twisted tales. I had a complete blast with all three of the stories. Full review for

Whilst it has it's flaws, especially within the first episode,
#SheHulk
grows stronger with every instalment and Tatiana Maslany is a delight. (P.S actually reading the review to see what I actually did and did not enjoy is *highly* recommended before commenting mindlessly!)
Seated in the front row for the first ever showing of SPENCER starring Kristen Stewart, I’ll be sharing my thoughts and review this afternoon
#Venezia78
I had the great privilege of having a chat with Jeffery Wright about American Fiction. We discussed why the film is resonating with audiences so deeply and how filming in Boston rewrote some of his personal memories of the city.
MEGALOPOLIS is truly insufferable on so many levels. You can tell that this has been forty years in the making and not in a good way by any means. Far past its sell by date right out of the gate. Aubrey Plaza is unsurprisingly the only redeeming quality
#Cannes2024
With just two days left to go, ANORA remains my favourite film of Cannes this year. Vivacious, highly amusing and quietly moving. Masterful performances from all parties, but Mikey Madison and Mark Eydelshteyn are absolutely electric. For

BIRD is a film that I know is going to continue growing on me by the minute. At times understated and intimate and at other a boisterous depiction of the English underbelly. Nykiya Adams is going to go places. Full review coming for

BARDO is not perfect movie, but the sheer scale of it is magnificent. Outstandingly stylistic, yet could have easily left at chunk of time on the cutting room floor. However, the last hour is a powerful ode to Iñárritu’s Mexican heritage & the struggles of immigration
