Can any of my friends here tell me why we do research? Why should we (as humans) understand complex things in the first place? I mean, in a few years we will be dead anyway.

I had the privilege of interacting with John when I was at the start of my journey. Those little chats and receiving compliments from him was influential on my line of thought. I will miss him.
I had a few interactions with John at @ufphysics, and he always lent an ear, even to untrained undergrads. There was not a hint of the usual academic hierarchy in him. I wish I could share with him the things we are working on now.

Over the years I've seen so many crappy jobs, mostly in the UK. But this is the ultimate, to build a wall over a carpet gripper when installing a new door frame! Unbelievable!
