🚨new paper alert🚨 @iamlindachang, @m_sendhil, @katy_milkman and I find that people systematically overweight numeric information in decision-making, a tendency we dub “quantification fixation”. Read more in Linda’s thread, or here:

In our new @PNASNews paper, across 21 experiments with 23,000+ participants, we identify a critical distortion that shapes decisions involving tradeoffs: we find that people systematically overweight quantified information in such decisions. Paper: 🧵

Interestingly, measurable goals boost anticipated belonging—counter to prior theory. As more organizations strip their websites of diversity entirely, this work highlights the value of clear signals of commitment to DEI for attracting highly qualified underrepresented candidates.

New paper led by my wonderful friend and coauthor @aneeshrai17. Top-line insight: larger homogeneous groups are more likely to diversify than smaller ones. Ironically, this means large homogeneous groups are surprisingly rare (and small ones are excessively common).

Does a homogeneous group's size matter for how it’s seen and if it’s diversified? Yes! Our new @OrganizationSci paper suggests decision-makers neglect gender and racial homogeneity in smaller groups while investing extra effort to diversify larger homogeneous groups
