Coaching "things" that don´t seem important, but actually make a difference: .1. Get down to eye level when teaching or giving feedback, kids will feel safer learning a new movement. 2. Putting the barbell back to the ground is as important as lifting it overhead. Teach it!

A myth I still often hear is, that resistance training is not effective in kids until they have significant levels of testosterone. Kids gain strength through neural adaptations, not hypertrophy. Increased motor unit activation leads to greater muscle output, so strength 🆙

One reason why it’s often easier for kids than older athletes to learn complex movements like the Olympic lifts is, that they don’t overthink the process of learning the technique. You show them and they just do it! #ICoachKids

Strength training is the best way to improve mobility. This one has worked very well for my more advanced athletes as a posterior chain warm up before squats/deadlifts/pulls. Actively control the movement through full range of motion and add load over time.

When designing a strength training program for kids, teaching techniques should be only a small part of a session. The majority of time should be about fundamental movement skills, playing games, making movement experiences and being very active. Variety is 🔑 for making it fun!

„Fast elbows“ is a common cue for (power)cleans, but some athletes struggle to execute it cause they think, they‘re already fast. So, I focus more on „spinning the bar“. Bars spin for a reason, actively spinning it in the turnover phase often automatically leads to faster elbows.

When an athlete has a timing issue in the snatch/clean pull, the legs stop driving while the bar is still moving upward as we can see here, one option for correcting is: Keep arms straight during the pull and try to stay as long as possible on the toes. „Be as tall as possible!“

Kids become "lazy" when you take away their autonomy & the ownership of their own sports participation & performance. When they don´t do it for themselves, but rather to please someone else like their coaches or parents. Kids aren´t soft, just tired of transactional leadership.

Kids aren't soft. Every year HS coaches get thousands of kids to voluntarily run 60-80 miles per week in the heat of the summer. When kids care, when the work has meaning & purpose, they will go to the well. Pointless hard work on things that don't matter decreases motivation.

A 16-year-old boy just lifted 206 kg (C&J) in the -81 kg category at the European Weightlifting Championships. We´re back to ridiculous numbers. I´m not gonna name the nationality or the coach. 😉. #iykyk

Just a thought: We all know that even elite athletes have no clue about S&C and constantly fall for gurus and fancy bs programs. Must we do a better job in educating them and explaining the why and how behind programming for performance on youth/high school/college level?.

I sold a weightlifting program for a while, which got lots of negative feedback for being "too boring", "not enough different exercises", "every week the same", "too basic". Unfortunately, many athletes expect the "silly stuff" with dozens of complexes and accessory lifts.

As a weightlifting coach I see so much over programming for people. 10 sets of this or that when 4 would probably suffice. 3 hour training sessions when someone actually should be there 1 hour. Silly stuff.

If you work as hard as possible and still always wonder if you’re lazy, you’re on your way to burnout. This also does not build self-efficacy in athletes because they constantly think they haven’t done enough even when they have.

Lazy people do a little work and think they should be winning! . -vs.-. Winners work as hard as possible and still wonder if they are being lazy!. Hard work > Lazy 💯. 🎥 @LewisCaralla .

Almost forgot my World Championships 2021 highlight today: 192 kg C&J from Rahmat Abdullah 🇮🇩 . Watch the slow first pull, magic in the second pull and then basically no pause before the jerk. #weightlifting

The biggest issue about this is, he did not get punished because he is a good rugby player. "Judge Clark said a conviction would have ended the Fijian-born player's Irish contract - and that would have been out of all proportion to the gravity of the offending.".

Sevu Reece is only playing for the All Blacks instead of in Ireland because he once chased a woman down the street, caught up with her, then smashed her face against the concrete, but the controversy today is that he’s playing against the country he was born in.
