Did making ASICs improve at all in terms of costs? It used to cost a ton, like a decade or two ago, paying for the mask upfront being the largest cost. ASICs can certainly perform better than FPGAs since there is no configuration overhead, which also means there is more room for logic in the same space. But why would AI folks go the distance to make their own ASICs over buying NVIDIA cards?
