Hey remember how tick tick...BOOM! was one of the best new movies of 2021 because it didn't shy away from the musical theatre, but actually leaned allllll the way in. Like, they went "if you don't know Sunday oh well this is for the theatre kids." Anyway that was cool.
It’s phenomenal that in the year 2024 we have Brandy back as Cinderella and
Paolo Montalban back as Charming, singing So This Is Love in a new movie

Do the kiddos not realize Matilda was a book first? A book written by one of the most famous (and extremely British) children’s authors of the 20th century? They think the musical is a remake of the 90’s film? Is that where we are?
Hey, remember when the Emcee wasn't the PROTAGONIST of Cabaret, but more an allegorical figure meant to evoke greater menacing themes? Ah well, I guess we all did, apparently.
I think a lot of us forget that many many MANY film/tv actors get their start on the stage (there are a lot of screen actors with theatre companies for a reason). That being said, I still think it's neat when musical theatre girlies get Oscar noms...
Any folks who are surprised there are aggressively straight men who do musicals don’t realize how much these guys get laid because of it. (Re: Ethan slater)
Recently I've had a few friends say they were surprised to find out that Jonathan Larson was NOT gay. But allow me to introduce you to a unique theatre kid: the straight boy who ALWAYS did theatre so he's super comfy in his sexuality & doesn't care if folks think he's gay.
My husband was lamenting over the fact that he never did theatre in high school. I was like bitch you toured in Rent across Asia with Aaron Tveit and dated Becca Jones you’re FINE.
I’ve never seen a biopic or jukebox bio-musical that comes anywhere close to Rocketman. Almost like the pop star who’s been writing musicals for decades is GOOD AT WRITING THEM. Taron was robbity rob rob robbed.
Watching tick tick Boom again (of course), and one of the subtle touches I didn’t realize until Jeff pointed it out is that Jon is always really cold, which is a symptom of Marfan Syndrome. The Larsons did a lot to spread awareness about it after Jon’s passing.
Ok since musical theatre is more than Broadway, gimme your favorite musicals that have never had a Broadway run. Could be from anywhere in the world, it just needs to have meant something to YOU. I'll start...
I think it says a lot about the current state of Broadway that a lot of us theatre kids are the most excited about the 26 piece orchestra (and as we should be).
#SweeneyTodd
Just a reminder not to make fun of the kids in that illegal Church Hamilton, but rather the adults who thought it'd be a good idea and 100% should know better.
In other “I feel old” news: the internet kiddos are only just realizing what a musical theatre fanboy Seth McFarlane is. Oh I’m sorry - the guy who inserted the complete Shipoopi film choreo shot for shot into Family Guys MIGHT be good at Harold Hill?
A couple years ago I asked an actor friend of mine if he wanted to watch the Tonys and he said “why would I want to watch a local theatre community’s award show?” And it’s stuck with me ever since.
I would like to assure Twitter that there is a fairly large swath of “Theatre Kids” who have always hated Dear Evan Hansen. So please don’t lump us in with someone annoying you knew in high school. We’re the Sondheim Snob contingent, a different level of obnoxious.
Broadway revivals are so awesome, but I think your community's local production is more exciting. You actually know the cast! YOU COULD AUDITION! You could be the producer/director and do your own take on the material. AFFORDABLE TICKETS!
You know the coolest thing about We Don't Talk About Bruno, as a middle school musical theatre teacher? I've had students who've wanted to do Lin songs for over a DECADE at this point & they are HARD.
Bruno is the 1st LMM act 1 finale style song that is accessible for tweens.
We are definitely due for a creative renaissance on Broadway. We need more weird, experimental, minimalist shit. We need to revive only to deconstruct and recontextualize. We need more dark, more CAMP, more risks. My kingdom for a 70’s style concept musical!
Ugh stop saying pro-shots are the end-all-be-all, Broadway stans. Go see a regional production of that musical you like in your community when theatre comes back. There are talented folk in your area who deserve to shine.
I can't flippin' wait for the local theatre community productions of DIANA. Gimme a drunk midnight West Hollywood divey drag club rendition NOW, that shit was never meant for Broadway.
I’m happy that Oliviers clip of Cabaret is making the rounds if only to remind folks that musical theatre isn’t only about screlting high F’s in the mask.
One of the phantom “plot holes” if you will is why everyone thinks the flawless opera singer in a literal opera is worse than a basic Broadway soprano.
The Phantom hating Carlotta's voice even after she nails those two flawless high Ds at the end of "Prima Donna" is peak unhinged opera fanatic behavior.
I know we like to knock Junior Versions of musicals, but as an educator who has relied on them for over a decade, I wanna tell you what's GOOD about them.
In 2010 I got to attend a Parks & Rec panel at the TV Academy. When I finally got to Aubrey Plaza I asked her to look like she hates me & that’s when the best picture of my life was taken.
My choir room has 5 sturdy foldable risers. My plan is to push them against the door, then get the kids out to the parking lot thru the back door. If we rehearse in the multipurpose room, we're fucked. I teach musical goddamn theatre to tweens.
Honestly, I'm here for it. They're Broadway actors who became Hollywood stars, and each will give their own spin on the character. Grande will be weird (in a good way), and Erivo... I mean, come on, she'll be radiant.
Rosie from Bye Bye Birdie wasn’t written for Chita Rivera…until she took on the role. Her Latina identity was infused into the character, including this delightful, sarcastic middle finger of a song. 😉 There will never be another like her. RIP Chita 🌹
I will never not be utterly fascinated by devastatingly straight musical theatre boys like Gene Kelly, Terrence Mann, Jeremy Jordan, Patrick Wilson, Bob Fosse, and the like who do it cuz they do it effortlessly and get laaaaaaaid.
@GloUpElite
@ScottThompson_
Rita Wilson did not give us full on wracking heaving body sobs while discussing An Affair to Remember to be known first as Tom Hanks' wife. Also she's a singer.
Tick Tick Boom is one of my favorite films not just this year but forever. HOWEVER as much as I love Andrew Garfield with ever fiber of my soul… he will never say “Stephen Sondheim” like an American.
JACK WARNER DIDN’T CAST JULIE ANDREWS AS ELIZA DOOLITTLE CUZ SHE WASN’T A HOUSEHOLD NAME YET SO INSTEAD HE WENT WITH AUDREY HEPBURN OBVIOUSLY DUBBED BY MARNI NIXON. JULIE GOT THE LAST LAUGH THO WHEN SHE BOOKED MARY POPPINS AND IN HER GOLDEN GLOBES SPEECH SHE THANKED JACK WARNER.
Dolores Umbridge is trending, which means the kids are realizing actors have careers outside the Harry Potter franchise. Imelda Staunton has a decades long career going, my sweet summer children.
Fun fact: I grew up with gothy black bob girl. Her name is Haley. She just decided to be an actor one day, then landed Freaky freakin' Friday, a stint on Weeds, and then just, like, stopped.
I just gotta say, I obviously always knew that Aaron Tveit was extremely talented, handsome, etc etc. But I never got like the FANDOM until Schmigadoon when they let him be funny as all get out. More funny Tveit please.
The more I think about it the less sense it makes. How can a character who only exists in an a parallel allegorical limboverse be your lead when the protagonist, CLIFF, is RIGHT. THERE.?
We have a literal Josh Groban on stage but I already know they won't let him sing "If I Can't Love Her" which, like, you can imagine how good that'd be right?
All these folks trying to one-up me saying "minimalism doesn't belong on Broadway," as if A Chorus Line doesn't have a Pulitzer and the Chicago revival isn't still one of the biggest hits on Broadway, or that the Prince-Sondheim era just...didn't happen.
Musical Theatre Composers: could you write a new musical with a proper baritone in it? Just one? And none of that baritenor shit, I want some Alfred Drake or Jerry Orbach range.
Clearly Disney Plus is only removing HOWARD because they don't want us to remember that Somewhere That's Green and Part of Your World are the same song.
That HAS to be the only reason, right? 🫤
I don't know why we need a new movie musical Cinderella and a completely separate Andrew Lloyd Webber West End Cinderella in the same year.
RODGERS AND HAMMERSTEIN AND WHITNEY HOUSTON ALREADY PERFECTED THE CINDERELLA MUSICAL FORMULA.
I don't know what Disney has against putting the songs from the stage version in their Beauty and the Beast remakes but just sooooo many lost opportunities.
So just saw that Music Man Tony Awards clip. God, Harold Hill and Marian tap dancing is so WEIRD. In those cumbersome band uniforms. With Hugh going "come on!" It's this self-indulgent little cul-de-sac for our celebs before we get back to the ACTUAL MARCHING BAND.
For everyone saying Debose’s rap is thanks to the Lin-Manuelification of pop culture, I will say this: if Lin wrote it, the lyrics would have been ✨good.✨
