Absolutely, Chinese Cinema was great in the 90s. Zhang Yimou did actual good movies not slop like today. Jia Zhangke was at his top (though he still produces some good movie today but they don't even make it to Chinese theater). Even Chen Kaige used to produce very good movies in the 90s. It all went to shit. Now it seems everyone needs to produce slop or fall into marginality. If you check at the list of top 10 blockbusters in China given by Arnaud, there is not a single good movie imo. (Again I've not watched this animation movie but even if it's absolutely Pixar or DreamWorks tier, I wouldn't probably compare it to the works of Stanley Kubrick (kinda apples and oranges).

@pwdvod @RnaudBertrand Hey thanks for being a honest Laowai commenting on China. Rare enough. It's actually extremely hard to find people that are not haters nor obvious propagandists. Keep it up.

He is talking about the Chinese movie industry as a whole not punctual success. The fact that the movie industry is not doing well in other countries as well doesn't make his point less relevant: The state of the movie industry in China is probably not the best way to underline the health of the Chinese consumption. (Nor would it be to underline the health of other economies at the moment).

@RnaudBertrand (note: I've not seen Nezha and apparently it's an animation movie so it may be different, I've seen a lot of Chinese blockbusters (movie with real-life actors not animation) and they are all between bad and terrible).
