@jonlovett
Speaking as a surgeon, a virologist, and a member of the GOP - this was a total fuck up. This administration now has body bags to account for - we could have done so much better.
Took off my n95 mask - this surgery mask goes over it. Long day in OR- so when someone says masks cause problems - they’re idiots. I wear it because the
#covid19
patients I operate on - yes it causes bruising but I wear it because some of you idiots didn’t
I have been accused of being political - anti-trump. Here is the thing - I am getting ready to walk into the ICU, with a N-95 mask that is a week old (suppose to be disposable). I hope not pass this on to my 95 yo dad, 9 yo son and wife (age undetermined). This is personal
@cdmukasa
As an elder attending - wondering why I didn't use
@wearfigs
sooner - comfort, pressed - and who doesn't want to look their best? Bury me in figs please - want to be comfortable for my cremation
I spent days in California in a hospital overrun with COVID. Our hospital was licensed 30 ICU beds and we had over 200 patients in ICU with COVID and on vents. We learned a lot. For example, In Wuhan they didn't have enough data, and we made many assumptions, such as putting
@Rothmus
I tried telling people this!
When I talked to doctors in Wuhan after the first wave hit China, their top recommendation was to avoid using intubated ventilators for extended periods at 100% O2, as it damages the lungs.
.
I got the “you’re not a doctor”
I applaud
@DrJenGunter
for getting the HPV series - a good example. We can wipe out this cancer - get vaccinated (oh, and she slightly falls out of the age range)
I was in a discussion with a physician who wanted my position backed up with data. As I tossed some articles his way I thought of my colleague
@DrJenGunter
and wanted to say "I'm not your librarian." He blocked me before I could say that but...
@rebeccanagle
From our Athabascan Nation in Alaska - who fought the fight of the Alaska Native Land Claims, we thank you for bringing this to the court, and congratulate you on a well earned victory
If a Notre Dame student went to an event and didn’t wear a mask they would be in violation of their code of conduct - but the pres of ND was intimidated and didn’t -
One of my favorite anesthesiologists had
#COVID19
- just got home. Was in ICU, intubated, had plasma, had remdesiver - and now his sats are 80% - he says to tell everyone this disease isn't worth it and "wear two masks if you have to."
So I will be doing a bit of tweeting today - my wife
@producergirl
will be having a laparoscopic cholecystectomy. Her surgeon picked her up from my house this morning. I've trained a lot of surgeons and seen a lot of surgeons - he is the most talented I have ever seen
@camanpour
@MDaware
@drjudymelinek
Every physician in America is affected by this: from those of us who try to fix the damage of bullets acutely, to internal medicine with long term, neurologists, GI, all physicians and sadly - pathologists. It is the public health crisis CDC cannot study because of Congress
Over the course of many years, we saved up money from our salaries to analyse a large number of Ayurvedic, Unani, Siddha and Homeopathy products and herbal & dietary supplements that were retrieved from patients who developed severe drug induced liver injury.
The majority of
@emmersbrown
I’m a doctor- and here is the issue - just not enough kits. It is silly but we should have kits available to test anyone who wants, but we don’t - we should have taken the WHO kits.
@DrJenGunter
when I make a tiktok about "Dr Love" getting a paper PhD from a nonaccredited university he sent me a cease and desist letter - claiming it impinged on his 21K a week sales for his supplements. He has since stopped calling himself a doctor but still, I assume, makes
Staying inside will not suppress your immune system. Wearing a face mask will not poison you from your own bacteria or from carbon dioxide. Wearing a mask shows you are intelligent, curtious, and caring. Not wearing one says you are selfish, ignorant, and not a good citizen.
New York death rate from
#COVID19
212 per million, NJ is 103, Louisiana 102 - California is -- 9 per million. This shows what early social distancing will do. A day or two matter and so does compliance - please stay home
Hands > gloves - virus degrade on human skin - we have enzymes that denature corona virus and break down RNY - gloves do not. Gloves you passively transfer the virus without degrading it. Hands you can and should wash
@vcstar
Or as I call them - the future surge and I will be taking care of them
@StJohnsHosp
and Community Hospital- reality w
#covid19
will not be nice for them
@DrEricLevi
We surgeons are vulnerable - lost a fellow surgeon to suicide a couple of months ago. I cut down my hours, and take lots of time off and travel a lot. Have to in order to survive
If you are vaccinated against
#covid19
please continue to wear a mask and use all precautions. Please do not think you now have the ability to travel or alter pandemic behavior. There is a lot of virus, and the next pandemic may become the mutated version of
#SARSCoV2
I divert from
#COVID19
to ask what Trump has against my 95 yo dad here in CA to mail in a ballot. My dad, a WW2 vet, landed on Omaha Beach. Why can't he mail in? You want an ID - seriously, want an ID for my dad - piss off
We have spent 24 billion to get two vaccines which have 94% efficacy, but an 11 cent paper mask can do almost as well. Still, no national mask mandate- still idiots thinking they have the right to spread contagion
#COVID19
flattening of the curve doesn’t mean we can all go outside - it means we stopped it a little bit. stay inside - be kind - today is Wednesday Whisky day
My dad, a WW 2 vet - 2 brothers, one deceased, both Viet Nam vets -this day means a lot to me. But today I am also thinking of the 111 doctors who lost their life to
#COVID19
this year in the US - they also fought the good fight. Please wear a mask
@hahussain
@jasmineelgamal
@AOC
They don’t separate families and they provide education health care and activities. We use to allow families to settle w their families while cases are pending. We use to have a heart
A friend of mine, surgeon who is fit and trains for tri-athletic sorts of things has
#COVID19
- took precautions, quite fit- now he is as limp as a newborn kitten. The disease is real - because he wore a mask he is not having the major lung issues.
The regular ICU beds in Houston are occupied. They will now use recovery room beds, transform other rooms- this is a limited number which is not sustainable. The largest medical center in the world was stopped by a governor who played politics with a virus
My new year’s resolution last year was to get a colonoscopy. Are you 45 years old? This should be the one New Year’s resolution you should keep. If you don’t believe me ask
@SWexner
My dad landed on Omaha Beach - here he is saluting his fallen comrades at Omaha Beach Cemetery in 2012. One year ago my 98 yo dad took his last breath - and now he has joined his many brothers and sisters - they were the greatest generation
Physicians meet people in time of crisis, when they are their most vulnerable. We dedicate our lives to helping them, we stay up at night worrying about them. We surgeons have to hurt them to help them. Proud of my profession, my colleagues
If people don't wear masks the anticipation is 180,000 will die from
#COVID19
by October 1, but if 95% of the US population wears mask the death toll will be about 146,000. We would save more in a few months than would die from auto accidents in 10 months
Who has more experience with gun violence than us? I’ve operated on too many from gun wounds and it is sad I have to worry about my 8 yo son going to school. Shame on you for promoting something against public health.
Someone should tell self-important anti-gun doctors to stay in their lane. Half of the articles in Annals of Internal Medicine are pushing for gun control. Most upsetting, however, the medical community seems to have consulted NO ONE but themselves.
So what you hear is that
#COVID19
only hits old and sick - but what is now being seen in ICU in the south are young people who are fighting for their lives. This is the disease of our lifetime - and sadly we have little leadership from politicians to guide us through
When a mother dies after a terrible illness it is a sense of relief and loss- but in time tears are replaced by smiles. My your Mother’s Day be filled w good memories and smiles
Wearing a mask is no longer about the other person - it is about you. Abundant evidence is that wearing a mask reduces the viral load you receive of
#COVID19
. Lower viral load means less severe disease
My partner and I did a tracheostomy on a
#COVID19
patient - there was one Papr hood for him, and the staff, none for me. still difficult to find these - this PPE is essential to dealing with our patients.
For those who think
#COVID19
is under control - there is no evidence of containment, we are not chasing small outbreaks with contact tracing - and we have no national plan to do so
In the operating room one does not have to yell, throw instruments, or berate the team. You control the OR with a look - simple look, ask the music to be turned off, go back to work.
#SoMe4Surgery
When
@GavinNewsom
issued the
#ShelterInPlace
order it was predicted we would be short almost 20,000 hospital beds. It now appears CA peak will be tomorrow and while some hospitals are tight, we have enough beds
The anti-science crowd in my channel have several things in common:
they own trucks
they display flags
they use patriot for their pronoun
usually from the south
- they don't trust science. I'm thinking we need to have more science in 8th grade - it is the last chance we have for
New
#COVID19
cases in California trended down to 891 cases, the lowest in 12 days. Today is supposed to be CA's peak - or Wednesday, depending upon which model. CA is well positioned with hospital and vents.
Arizona lacks the political will to do what is needed to decrease the spread of the epidemic.
@dougducey
has failed to protect his constituents. You cannot play politics with a virus and you should not cherry pick the doctors you listen to.
In spite of your local bar tender telling you that
#COVID19
isn't that bad, or whatever facebook friends you have - it is that bad, and we opened up without a plan and that has been a disaster
We in science and medicine will work hard to rid the world of
#COVID19
but many of us tire after long and miserable days and our escape to entertainment of food has kept us sane - my special thanks to my good friend
@SimonMajumdar
whose podcast
@EatMyGlobePCast
is tops

The flu kills .83% of infected people above age 65, whereas the the coronavirus's death rate is 10.7% for infected people from age 65 to 74, 21.2% for the 75-84 group, and 30.2% for people over 85.
My 9 yo son has the best palate of anyone I’ve met - he determined I needed more salt, some ginger, turmeric and chili flakes. I blame uncle
@SimonMajumdar
Florida Arizona and Texas all with ICU full in major cities - yes those governors thought it was ok to open without a plan just a gamble of the lives of constituents
#covid19
doesn’t care about your political party and will win every gamble
Still no good evidence for
#Hydroxychloroquine
as an agent against
#COVID19
- there is good evidence for it against Rheumatoid Arthritis and Lupus - so save it for those who need it.
We now have a system to ration care to
#COVID19
patients - if we run out of ventilators or supplies or nurses we will determine who will get care and who will not. We anticipate this will begin in 2 weeks. I hope you enjoyed your family at Xmas
Today I tested negative for
#COVID19
- if you don’t think that is the best gift for me and my family - in the meantime if someone says it is their right to protest against staying at home tell them I said to piss off
My right wing brother asks what we can learn so we can prevent this from happening again - in terms of equipment. I told him we have had this playbook for a pandemic for twenty years - and it was tossed out by the current administration
#covid19
My friend who works in an ER in GA, normally slightly right of DT in her politics, thinks opening things up is crazy. For so many it is hard if you don't see things
