Deeply sad to report that the peerless scholar, teacher and human being, Myles Burnyeat, died peacefully yesterday. Wonderful PhD supervisor, mentor and friend. I saw him recently - he was happy and serene. I will miss him so much.
As the University of Leeds, with its punitive approach to ASOS deductions, appears determined to show its true colours as black sheep of the White Rose institutions, Bob Stern and I have made the decision to resign our Leeds posts as external examiners.
Plato on the tyrant: ‘And if the people submit to him, well and good. If not, he’ll punish his country ... He will bring his country ... under the control of followers whom he introduces, and keep it in subjection to them. Which was the object of all his ambitions’ (Rep 575d)

Very painful to say this, as I still love much BBC output, but something went very badly wrong with their news reporting as early as 2016, especially
@BBCRadio4
&
@BBCr4today
. Some of their news editors & reporters are facilitating the coup, just as they facilitated Brexit
How is it that BBC World service (early hours this am) reported protests on the streets in cities across the UK in its headline World news but
#r4today
which is supposed to be a flagship news for UK domestic consumption makes no mention?
Really important philosophical questions for BBC & Tim Davie to consider. Not just how to balance commitments to both impartiality & freedom of expression, but also what constitutes impartiality (& balance), & at what point does impartiality involve complicity with moral wrong?
@Isysuttie
Not only did I once borrow cash from my daughter’s money box to pay the tooth fairy, but I forged swirly fairy handwriting in gold ink as she had left out a thank you note & asked for a written response as PROOF of existence. She now studies Theoretical Physics; I teach ethics
John Humphrys has just said 'the British public would not take kindly to being asked to vote again' in another referendum. Well, over a million of us would (did JH not notice the March?) and I think many more than that. Please RT if you agree.
@r4Today
A man who 'instinctively' grabs a woman by the neck and shoves her against a pillar when his dinner is peacefully interrupted has more serious problems than the issue of whether he has breached the ministerial code
One of my biggest regrets: in my mid-twenties I once found a note from Iris Murdoch in my p/h at (then) New Hall, suggesting we start a conversation on Plato. Though normally outgoing, I felt too shy & insignificant to respond.

I am currently writing a piece on the future of public philosophy & would be very interested to know your thoughts. What do you think should be the topics, areas, modes of engagement, direction of travel? What are the particular opportunities & challenges?

Beautiful funeral service today in All Souls College for my wonderful PhD supervisor, mentor and friend, Myles Burnyeat. Glorious music, poetry and Plato; tributes to various aspects of his rich and full life. In pace, dear friend, and thank you so much.
@theAliceRoberts
Keep talking. Insecure inadequates don’t deserve space in your head. I have several times been advised by such to read Plato’s Republic. I have written 2 books on it and several articles. Keep on keeping on. You are brilliant.
I shall be discussing Plato's Gorgias tomorrow Thursday 25th 9.00

with the superb Fiona Leigh and Frisbee Sheffield - a magnificent dialogue exploring rhetoric, virtue and power. Do join us!
@BBCRadio4
In his ‘apology’, Boris Johnson either used first person plural or 3rd person passive. At no point did he take personal responsibility or admit to personal failings. Only employed ‘I’ at the end in his triumphalist claims about the glories he was personally about to achieve.
Magee's television series The Great Philosophers and accompanying book not only helped me to understand the philosophers better; it showed me how philosophy might be presented to new audiences. Thank you.
Emotional weekend as I help daughter get ready to leave home on Sunday, studying theoretical physics at an excellent university. I haven't understood her maths homework since she was about 11 (my loss: I wish I could). So, so proud of her and happy for her.
@Dr2NisreenAlwan
I made an Archive on 4 programme, 'No More Heroes?', in which I discuss how politicians & others deploy the language of heroism to try to deflect attention from their own wrongdoings. I also think that in present dire circumstances doing one's duty can often count as heroic.

I shall be raising a glass to Plato tonight! His coruscating analysis in the Republic (562a-576b) of how demagogues manipulate democracy to get themselves elected and then become tyrants has been proved spot-on since 2016.
Plato, father of philosophers, died at a symposium at 81, on 7 November, his birthday. Platonists until Porphyry and Plotinus renewed this feast each year to mark Plato's birth and death , but after Porphyry these solemn banquets were neglected for 1,200 years.

This is a very serious assault on our representative democracy. A significant number of the MPs elected to represent us are being denied the right to vote. We have the technology for remote voting; this is unacceptable.
Tomorrow the Govt wants 650 MPs to stand in a giant queue to vote on how the Commons makes decisions from now on. As somebody in the 'vulnerable' category, I am unable to join them.
I am furious that for the first time in my 25 years as an MP I am being denied the right to vote!
@RoryStewartUK
It's a wonderful book. I was one of the judges for the Man Booker International 2019 (as it was then called) & it was on our shortlist. As I'm sure you know, the title is a (slightly amended) quote from Blake. Philosophy, black comedy, ecological thriller, poetry ...terrific read
On the occasions when I was caring for a young child when I had flu and her father was away, I tried as far as possible to be in a separate room; I did not enclose her in a car with me for 260 miles. And no loo breaks for a young child? I don’t believe it

See Plato Republic 567d-e and 575d on how the demagogue-turned-tyrant builds up his private bodyguard and uses it to wreak havoc on the country that originally elected him.
Duncan-Smith: 'I think we are all Brexiteers now.' No, we are not. I would still love my country democratically to change its mind & avoid what I feel more strongly than ever is a profoundly wrong course
@BBCr4today
Laura Trott sats that "the PM is preparing to introduce emergency legislation so foreign courts cannot obstruct the will of the people".
The ‘will of the people ‘ is a fascist trope widely used in Germany in the 1930s
You might want to check p.42 of my 'Plato's Republic: a Ladybird Expert Book', where I discuss Plato's incisive analysis of how a democracy can be subverted to tyranny by a cynical demagogue, who claims that he, & only he, represents the will of the people
The allure of the political strongman, who kicks over Parliament & the law in the belief that he alone knows "the will of the people", is becoming dangerously mainstream. If a historian cannot understand the dangers, our politics is truly lost. [THREAD]

The country that I love deeply being so profoundly damaged because of irreconcilable rifts in the Conservative Party: the unnecessary ref did not heal them & May has, disgracefully, decided to put keeping her party together above wellbeing of U.K., Europe & beyond. J'accuse.
Donald Tusk: “I asked David Cameron, ‘Why did you decide on this referendum, this – it’s so dangerous, so even stupid, you know,’ and, he told me – & I was really amazed & even shocked – that the only reason was his own party.”

To my students, So looking forward to returning to teaching & learning with you next week. Please understand that I have been striking for what imo is the future health of HE, for benefit of students as well as staff
Dear Mrs May, Please do not claim to speak for me. You are not 'on my side', &, although of course I am sick of this horrendous mess, I have not 'had enough' but will keep fighting for what I believe is in the national interest, namely a

a) Very, very unlikely to be a Labour majority; hung Parliament much more likely; b) for all the very serious problems afflicting Labour at the moment, the Johnson government is worse - genuinely bent on undermining the rule of law, Parliamentary sovereignty & cohesion of U.K.
See Plato 'Republic' 562a-569c: chilling analysis of the subversion of democracy to tyranny by a demagogue. Not that Plato was a big fan of (direct) democracy, but he did think tyranny a lot worse. Read it NOW.

We have a few days left of this crescendo of bullshit from Johnson/Hunt. The fact that both have already shifted to blaming the EU for *their* upcoming failure tells us all we need to know. The swaggering pride foretells the fall.
Don’t accept any of it. And don’t give up.
Power, justice, how to conduct debate and make democratic decisions ... and how to catch up with a boat that left 24 hours before ... Thucydides has it all

Yes. I gave a talk at Eton on Thrasymachus’ claim that justice is simply the interest of the stronger, and Plato’s distinction between sophistry and philosophy. I asked for local state schools to be invited (they were).
Amazon has just recommended I buy Plato's Republic. As I only possess 9 editions (in both Greek & English), this could be a good idea. I wonder if they will recommend I buy my own Ladybird Expert Guide to Plato's Republic when it comes out?

In Our Time programme this pm on Roman Emperor & practising Stoic Marcus Aurelius, with

& Simon Goldhill. All in our homes, in my case cuddling a hot water bottle, as I had turned off the noisy heating. Broadcast prob. 25 Feb.
I use my words with great care on all social media sites, so I will carefully state that it is impossible to exaggerate how critical the next few months are going to be for the survival of genuine democracy in the U.S., & in consequence for the health of democracies everywhere.
Best of luck to all my students taking my Plato's Symposium exam today! Read the questions carefully and don't say 'arguably' and then decline to argue for it ...
Given the Government’s apparent desire to stop students even considering alternatives to capitalism, it gives me quiet pleasure that I am currently writing a paper on the relationship between More’s Utopia and Plato’s Republic
I keep thinking of The Great Gatsby: ‘They were careless people, Tom and Daisy - they smashed up things and creatures and then retreated back into their money or their vast carelessness … and let other people clean up the mess they had made.’
Have just finished checking the proofs for my Ladybird Expert Guide to Plato's Republic - out early next year. Gorgeous illustrations by Angelo Rinaldi

Writers? Artists? Independent inventors? Explorers? Farmers?Conservationists? What counts as a ‘professional’ job? This sounds like knowing the price of everything and the value of nothing.
“Courses will be capped that do not have a high proportion of graduates getting a professional job, going into postgraduate study or starting a business, the prime minister will announce on Monday.”
Of all the very bad things going on in U.K. right now, this is the most dangerous. We all need to WAKE UP to what is happening and legally oppose it before any opposition, no matter how peaceful, is deemed illegal.
DESTROYING THE COURTS
Government plans could allow them to “...remove union rights, close down parliament ... close businesses, close publications, declare war, sell arms and break humanitarian law”
Currently It is the courts that prevent the abusive use of these powers.
Hugely impressed by mature & responsible way daughter & university housemates are coping: all doing exams in their bedrooms so timetable in kitchen to ensure no-one puts on washing machine or makes a noise, or puts unnecessary pressure on WiFi. Chess etc. in evenings
You attack all MPs (even though you are one yourself), yet still want them to obey you. You blame everyone but yourself. Your rhetoric is divisive & dangerous. The country needs a sensible coalition and you need a long holiday.
Personal survival kit for turbulent times: friends, swimming, jogging, Beethoven, Bach, Miles Davis, Jane Austen, P.G. Wodehouse, cricket commentary, dark chocolate. We all need breaks from anger & confusion. Your tips?
