Received my first 2 rejections this past Friday and, while it’s never pleasant, I appreciate the programs for not keeping me in the dark. Rejection is part of the process and I wish more programs did this. Now I can focus on the ones that do want me.

4.If you didn’t get enough IVs, how can you improve your CV? Have you taken Step 3? Do you have enough USCE? Are your LORs helping or hindering your app? Do you have research experience? Can you improve your networking? Does your PS really showcase who you are?

I hope no IMG accepts this, otherwise these companies are going to multiply and start charging even more. They know research is important to us, so they want to squeeze all money they can. Having unpaid positions is hard enough, but being charged is crossing a line.

2.Once you’ve recovered, it’s time to reflect on what could have gone wrong. (Of course, if you’re an IMG remember: it’s not just you. Match rates for IMGs are < 60%, so unfortunately, even great candidates go unmatched sometimes).

my experience (from what I’ve observed with colleagues) if you had a satisfactory number of IVs and didn’t match, you might want to reflect on your IV skills. Your CV got you the IVs, but you might need to train more and get better at selling yourself.

But on that note, I have recently heard of someone who went a few years unmatched, worked as a PA for 2 years, and then networked his way into a residency position. So maybe thats an option for some people who go unmatched more than a couple of times.

As an IMG, I see it this way: I wouldn’t have a visa to work in the US & I get to be a doctor in my home county, so I could use this money to have more USCE and maybe even research to apply again.

There’s no right or wrong, both are possible, you have to see what makes sense in your journey. I personally took the research position after completing all the steps but have many friends who did 2 or more years of research before finishing the steps. It really depends!

Through Twitter! After I went unmatched, I posted on Twitter that I was looking for a research position in the US, and a bunch of people were nice enough to answer, showing me some opportunities. I applied to a bunch and interviewed in a few, eventually, I got one!

Your mom is very kind. But as an applicant who didn’t match this cycle, I don’t mind at all to see people celebrating their match. In fact, I love it. Especially when it’s IMGs or people with not such traditional paths. It gives me hope ❤️🙏🏼

Of course! As soon as soap was over I started to actively look for research opportunities in the US. I’m currently in a voluntary research position at Oklahoma University. This helped open many doors!
