New in this story— Closer Sean Doolittle will not attend the White House with the Nationals on Monday. He is the first player to confirm that they will not be there:
"I don’t want to hang out with somebody who talks like that.”
An extensive, exclusive interview with Sean Doolittle on why he will not visit the White House with the Nationals on Monday:
Max Scherzer just struck out J.T. Realmuto to end the fifth and stared at Joe Girardi the whole way to the dugout. When Girardi walked out to say something, Max held up his glove and hat again, taunting him.
Girardi was ejected.
Fernando Tatis Jr. just spoke with reporters outside the same dugout he was shepherding fans into last night. He said that, in the moment, there is no distinction between players and fans.
“Everybody is just people. Just human beings.”
Anthony Rendon, Javy Guerra, Joe Ross, Wander Suero, Wilmer Difo, Michael A. Taylor, Victor Robles and Sean Doolittle are not on the official attendance list for today’s ceremony at the White House.
I keep thinking about this Stephen Strasburg quote from right after the Nationals clinched a spot in the World Series: “You have a great year, and you can run into a buzz saw. Maybe this year we’re the buzz saw.”
Here it is. The question was about some owners recently suggesting that there could be fans in parks later this season. Sean Doolittle's answer touched on a lot more:
While Trea Turner told reporters that he had nothing to say about the Astros, and wanted to focus on the Nationals, Howie Kendrick chimed in from the background: "Ain't what you told me yesterday."
Sean Doolittle on his message to fan: “I feel terrible for them … I can empathize with how they’re feeling.”
Later adds: “I’m still here. I don’t know if that helps.”
Former Nationals shortstop Ian Desmond just became the fourth player today to announce that he will not play this season. Desmond did so at the end of an Instagram post that touched on system racism and a lack of inclusion in baseball, among many other poignant thoughts.
Joe Girardi asked the umpires to check Max Scherzer and he spiked his hat and glove and then started to undo his belt by the mound. Holy hell this is getting nuts.
Juan Soto on when he found out he was going to the Padres: “I cried the whole morning.”
He then adds that he knows it’s a business and trades happen. But this further underscores no matter how much speculation there was, it still hit him hard.
On an off day in 2019, Juan Soto went to see the Potomac Nationals play so he could see some of the guys he befriended in the minors. He even spent some time in the dugout. So ... traveling to cheer on friends in his free time is nothing new.
Juan Soto just arrived at Nationals Park. Threw up his hands and said “Hey! Hey!” to the team’s social media crew by the tunnel. First thing he says to me: “You didn’t tell me where I was going!”
Then he went into the Nationals’ clubhouse with a stack of envelopes.
There is a nude streaker at Nationals Park who just climbed into the tarp roller. This is a picture that is not zoomed in so, you know, we don’t get too intimate here.
Stephen Strasburg twice mentioned that the World Series documentary produced by MLB had a clear Astros angle. He laughed a bit while saying the producers figured Houston would win, and added that it was cool to see the heartbreak from the other side. Stone cold.
Yan Gomes: "If any questions are about the umpire, I'm not going to talk about it. But I'll keep saying, the fact that you're asking about him, you're answering your own questions."
Someone with a bullhorn behind Petco Park is talking about the Astros: "The baseball community has not forgotten your transgressions."
This man is now going through each player and saying: "You are a cheater, shame on you."
Hearing that Max Scherzer has approved Dodgers as a destination and a deal to send him and Trea Turner to LA is close, according to people with knowledge of the situation.
* Ahem *
This past season was my last on the Nationals beat, capping my run at five years. I had a blast, even when you all yelled at me, and just want to thank everyone who read, engaged and cared about what I wrote (or at least a few things I wrote). You made it worthwhile.
The Nationals just tweeted that they look forward to having Joe Biden throw out the first pitch on Opening Day in 2021. Sounds like a presidential tradition will be restored.
Ryan Zimmerman thanks Donald Trump to containing to “make America the greatest country to live in in the world” and presents him with a white Nationals jersey with the No. 45 on it.
Anthony Rendon when asked if he thinks about the playoff loss to the Dodgers in 2016: “Do you think about your girlfriend who dumped you 20 years ago?”
The Angels-Mariners brawl was on the TVs when we were in their clubhouse a bit ago. Everyone was watching, of course, then we went to talk with Nelson Cruz. He smiled and asked: "Why doesn't he like sunflower seeds?"
Final tweet before I try to steal a few Zs: Juan Soto wasn’t caught in a rundown in the way you may have thought he was. He kept running to draw a throw to third so Anthony Rendon could score. It was the biggest moment of his baseball life and that’s what he was thinking.
Cool story from the Nationals clubhouse: To celebrate Sean Doolittle reaching 10 years of major league service, teammates bought him a Darth Vader masked signed by David Prowse, the actor who was in the suit for the original trilogy.
Just spoke with Max Scherzer about Ryan Zimmerman retiring. His reaction: "His legacy of being a National, coming up as quick as he did, playing as well as he did for as long as he did, then culminating in the World Series ring, it's just really incredible."
A woman needed the Heimlich at Oracle Park and a Nationals fan rushed over and helped her. He got a big cheer and some others are now shaking his hand. Thankfully, she seems to be doing okay.
Desmond wrote: "In clubhouses we've got racist, sexist, homophobic jokes or flat-out problems. We've got cheating. We've got a minority issue from the top down. One African American GM. Two African American managers. Less than 8% Black players. No Black majority team owners."
Max Scherzer smiled and sipped his Budweiser when asked if the Nationals would match the way the Capitals partied after their Stanley Cup title: "We'll try."
They just celebrated Houston's AL pennant on the big screen and cut away when José Altuve tells teammates to not take his shirt off. This is something.
Howie Kendrick just posted on Instagram that he has retired from baseball. Both Mike Rizzo and Dave Martinez said last week that they thought Kendrick wanted to return, but he’s now announced that he’ll hang it up after 15 years.
Howie Kendrick has won the Heart and Hustle Award, given out by the Major League Baseball Players Alumni Association. Kendrick, 36, was the NLCS MVP for the Nationals and is now a free agent.
Dave Martinez says he sat with Max Scherzer for 45 minutes yesterday, then 45 minutes today, just reminiscing, laughing, getting sad about splitting up.
A cool moment during live BP earlier: Nelson Cruz noticed Erick Fedde tipping a pitch and met him in front of the mound to show him the tell. There’s that experience at work.
When Juan Soto was mic’d up on Apple TV+, he told the in-dugout crew that he wanted an Apple TV for every one of his teammates. Today, 30 of them arrived and were passed around the clubhouse by Soto. Guess he’s got some pull.
Some really exciting news to share: I’m writing a book for
@SimonBooks
on the Nationals’ 2019 season and World Series title. Much more information to come. In the meantime, I’ll be reliving it all so you can, too.
Big pregame update: A couple weeks ago, Dave Martinez asked where I bought a corduroy shirt/jacket. This afternoon, he walked into his presser wearing the same one (different color). Davey confirmed this is first time he’s taken fashion tips from a media member.
After a video for Juan Soto + Josh Bell, a message to fans from Juan Soto played on the big screen. He was wearing a backward Padres hat.
"I love you all even if I have another team's uniform. I am still going to love you guys. Thank you. You guys made me who I am today."
So a package arrived in West Palm Beach this morning, and inside it was this pair of real, bound books. Holding them for the first time was awesome, and I can’t wait for Buzz Saw to hit the shelves on March 24.
Juan Soto says he stared at Zack Wheeler after his home run because he is just being competitive and having fun. Says he chats with J.T. Realmuto a lot and they were bantering. Also said he would be cool if Zack Wheeler did a back flip after striking him out.
Let me get this straight: Jessica Mendoza is "sad" for baseball that ... a player spoke to reporters about a really big problem within the sport, which was greatly shifting the playing field and damaging careers? That's what she is "sad" about?
The building is being evacuated, media included, so I need to get moving. But we have a lot of reporters working on this and we'll continue to provide updates as we have them. Hope everyone is safe.
Sources: Juan Soto took multiple instant-result coronavirus tests today — both saliva and nasal — and the results were negative. The tests were conducted by the team, which is permitted by MLB protocol as a point-of-care option when rapid testing is necessary.
This may seem obvious because of pure timing, and Max Scherzer having to work through and approve any deal, but the feeling around the organization is that Scherzer will likely be dealt at some point today.
Dave Martinez is pretty emotional right now. He says the players are his family, and he's already lost a lot of sleep this month. When asked about whether he has doubts about going to MIA this weekend: "Hopefully they make the right decision. That's all I'm going to say."
Exchange continued ...
Turner: "You can stand up here and say it if you want."
Kendrick: "About what you said, or what?"
Turner: "Whatever you were about to say."
Kendrick, in a frighteningly high-pitched voice: "I plead the fifth!"
Can't tell if this is the right time or not to report that the Nationals have been in discussions with left-handed reliever Sean Doolittle this weekend. But, according to multiple people with knowledge of the situation, they have been.
There's video of this somewhere, but a fan asked Sean Doolittle to sign his Sheetz gift card before yesterday's game and Doolittle, a south Jersey native, wrote "Go Wawa" on it.
Nelson Cruz, a big napper, asked me during his opening presser if there’s a nap room at Nationals Park.
(The answer is yes)
When I suggested he probably should have known whether there was one or not, he said he figured his agent had that covered.
And that’s a wrap, wrap, wrap on regular season coverage. More stories to come, of course, but thank you to everyone who followed along and read for another season. You are very appreciated.
Juan Soto turns 22 today. He is a World Series champion, won the NL batting title in a 60-game season, led the majors in just about every important offensive stat in 2020 and has 69 career home runs. It’s a shame he’s already getting so old.
Sean Doolittle's tribute video just played at Nationals Park. There was some baseball, there was some Star Wars, there was some of his work around the D.C. community. There was a World Series celebration. Then there was a very loud ovation.
Just received this text from a Nationals player: "LET'S GOOOOOOO." That's seven O's.
Daniel Hudson was loved in the clubhouse for the three months he was in Washington. Imagine this is the common reaction among guys who get to keep playing with him.
Sources: By the end of today, the Nationals plan to terminate contracts for multiple employees who did not comply with the vaccinate mandate implemented in August. This includes Bob Boone, pitching coordinator Brad Holman and minor league pitching coach Larry Pardo.
Breaking: Stephen Strasburg is set to retire, according to three people familiar with the matter. There are tentative plans for a press conference at Nationals Park on Sept. 9.

Sean Doolittle: They still have not sent us the PPE gear players are supposed to have. He mentions N-95 masks, gloves, and says this is symptomatic of the negotiations being too focused on money and not enough on health and safety protocols.
Interesting to hear national reporters starting to hedge on whether there will be a Juan Soto trade by 6 p.m. on Tuesday. From the Nationals’ side — which is the side I know — my sense has always been that the ask would be extremely high and a deal has never been inevitable.
About to head out of Nationals Park for the last time this season. In all sincerity: Thank you to everyone who read and followed along all summer. It was weird, and often ripe for butting heads, but I so appreciate how invested you all are. It makes covering this team a blast.
“I know where they all came from and what they have been through."
Why Juan Soto donated all of his all-star week earnings to Olympians from the Dominican Republic:
A pure exchange between a young Star and his hitting coach...
Kevin Long: “When’s your birthday?”
Juan Soto: “October 25.”
Long: “And whats my goal for this season?”
Soto: “To play on October 25.”
