Actually not.
It was first formulated in the late 80s when R-33 was in full service. It started as a counter to AIM-54, which is a very capable missile with 180km+ range in the last version. The idea was to use R-77 to shoot down big AAMs which produces much higher RCS.
This post brings up something extremely interesting that I've seen mentioned occasionally in TG chatter - Russian SAMs are now shooting down Ukrainian SAMs to protect Russian aircraft.
This is a level of capability beyond anything conceived of even two years ago.
