So after years of hard work, today was a very proud day for me as I finally have my book in print. When it comes to health, men are a tricky group to engage, so this was my way to reach out and help more men become healthier.

Today I saw a patient I saw 4 weeks ago unhappy they had a 13m wait to see ENT. Advised by the booking office, I duly wrote a pointless letter asking them to expedite this which, of course had no effect. Today’s appointment was to complain about my failure to resolve this. Cont.
Being a man is bad for your health. Men have a greater chance of getting almost every illness. They die sooner too. In fact, 1 in 5 men die before the age of 65. I’m on a mission to help guys lead healthier lives. That’s why I wrote Man Alive. Link in bio.

When I was junior doc in paeds, I remember a mum literally screaming at me to help her unvaccinated child who had developed measles encephalitis. We did our best but he ended up with long term brain injury, and saddest thing was it was avoidable. It was just so sad
Yesterday I posted this message below. It wasn’t a dig at secondary care, (who are horribly stretched already), or blaming the patient, (who is trapped in the middle), and it wasn’t political. It was just highlighting my daily job as a GP - didn’t quite expect this response…

Just yet another example of how truly effective vaccines are. Shame on the UK we are now having to play catchup with measles again.

We need to make GPs work harder! I’m currently only seeing/speaking to up to 60 patients in a day, but if I didn’t eat, drink, or pass urine I could easily squeeze in another 10. Lazy doctors.
This is very uncomfortable read. Whether you support her Just stop oil stance or not, there seems a near unanimous condemnation of our regulatory body on how they handled this. Does this make her an unsafe or bad doctor?

At the gym i was asked if I was on testosterone- because I’m a doc I must be? I said I was not on TRT, but maybe one day I will need it, and I hope it will have less stigma than it does now. Men should not feel embarrassed about their hormones. ..

We’ve already got shortages in medicines in primary care. Many of us docs have been highlighting our worries over access to medicines for months, and for some reason the politicians think they know better. Why can’t a politician just admit they got something wrong?

How many of us rely on coffee to get through the day? 10% of GP consultations are for tiredness and yet we rarely consider testosterone as a cause. Fatigue is an early sign of low T in men and can last years. Get it checked.

This isn’t about scaring anyone. This was a simple case of a preventable medical problem that left a child with life long complications. Vaccines are not perfect but they have literally saved millions of lives. So it is about making an informed choice.
Under active thyroid = give thyroxine
Type 1 diabetes = give insulin
Menopause = give HRT
Low testosterone = lifestyle changes, retest in 6 months, just accept it’s normal for an ageing man. This is the story I see repeatedly in clinic.

Love the Government’s idea to allow people to become doctors straight from A-level without going to medical school. They’ll realise how screwed the NHS is by 20 and be able to retrain by 25. I presume this is their new medical kit? They’ll need the gun.

How very sad that this is a luxury of being a consultant. Could you imagine in the private sector if an employer said - “after 12 years if you work really hard you can have your own desk”. A sign of how we treat doctors?

The point is not that women have it better than men or vice versa, but that men are very bad at looking after their own health. The book is a way to try and get men to engage better in looking after themselves. Not a comparison of differences in the sexes.
@DrNighatArif
Social media is a tough place. Even when people do things that are clearly positive, there is always still someone with an axe to grind, a passive aggressive agenda, or is just openly unpleasant. Amazing that health promotion and education can be turned into a negative. So sad

One of the worst articles I think I have skimmed through... the Unnecessary use of so much descriptive text to tell us eating too much red meat increases cancer risk.
Had a patient today who asked if he should be taking extra magnesium. The answer as I keep saying to 99% of patients is NO!! You only need extra magnesium if you are deficient. If you have a good diet you should be fine. Stop buying this stuff

So studies found that women who are married tend to die sooner than those who stay single. The inverse is true for men….. you have a point
I’m tired of the constant GP bashing, but articles like this don’t help anyone. No doctor is “to blame”, and the media is constantly looking for ways to castigate us. If you want to look for blame, look at the politics, the funding, and the structure

I’m finding the same issue with main nhs practice account. Daily dozens of courses, IT systems, and other nonsense I never signed up. Finding it impossible to pick out the wheat from the chaff
In the next year we should see the release of generic “unbranded” testosterone gel. This may sound boring, but as cost of topical treatments have been sticking point, both nhs and private, this could help thousands of more men access treatment. 1 less hurdle .

This may be a mute point but, but for those people who say they’re Immune system is fine so they don’t need a vaccine, perhaps it would be worth considering that you’re getting the vaccine to protect others as well as yourself.
