The real reason is Gov. John Engler got rid of residency requirements for all city workers statewide in 1999. It hurt Detroit worse. Until that point, most cops worked and lived in the city, primarily in two neighborhoods called “Copper Canyon”.

Like they say: "Forward down the field." That's what I care about as a 20 year season ticket holder. We're 2-0. Huge for us. FF is extra.

Great story. Great reporting. Great detail. Loved how you got his brother, an important element to this story to open up. THIIS. IS. JOURNALISM.
It started with me watching a simple Home Depot commercial with a HBCU band in the background. What turned out was an enterprise story on a number of HBCU band’s appearance in the the national spotlight.

It’s been almost 20 years ago, but I recall covering his launch that day. “I’m that little boy you told to get off your grass. I’m also that little boy you told to stay in school, make something of yourself and come back to serve this community.”
I know we want to blame the media on stuff, but every outlet in Chicago has covered this story since Saturday. We take enough criticism when we get it wrong.
Media blackout. This beautiful 24 year-old college grad wanted to make a difference. Areanah Preston became a police officer to demonstrate how law enforcement can help make communities better. Last night was gunned down in Chicago while off duty. The press ignored her story.
Cass Tech 2020 Isaiah Sanders is a huge reason Cass Tech is so good.
He had his usual impact in the PSL finals.
He talked to The D Zone after the win. It was hard for him to talk about himself, humble, good kid.

“We have a predator in the White House,” Kamala Harris says before a lengthy talk about them. “The other thing about predators is they are cowards.”

Visiting some of our new DPSCD schools today. Great feeling to see our principals and teachers getting classrooms ready. Hard to believe these buildings were taxpayer assets used by charter schools.
“It was a birthday party, but apparently some Black guests weren’t there to blow out the candles.”

This is so powerful. She taught Black history to her team every day during the season through her masks. But when she said Ayiana Stanley-Jones, it touched me. She was just a 7-year-old baby shot in a raid.
Every game day this season, Coach
@Raina15
wore a different mask. Every mask came with a story & each story led to conversation.

Just do what you do and don’t pay any attention to those who will never know what we do and how much advocating we do. Without us, who does the community have?
9-11 was historic in the nation. We were in shock over the Twin Towers when Kwame Kilpatrick got his improbable primary win. Glad a had a piece of this coverage, watching Kilpatrick launch his mayoral bid, while covering

All I will say is there’s a reason why his first CD was called College Dropout. Got slavery years wrong. Spelling Willie Lynch’s name wrong. A mind is a terrible thing not to have.

Derrick Walton Sr. turned Chandler Park Academy into serious contenders when he coached them from 2008-2013. He won five Charter School League titles with the Eagles and one NBA player, his son Derrick Jr. He’s currently at Lakeshore High, turning that program around.

The great Charles Nichols led Detroit Kettering to consecutive PSL basketball city titles in 1970 and 1971, with future NBA players Lindsay “Spider” Hairston and Eric Money. He was Kettering’s first head coach when it opened in 1965. He also coached at Detroit under Dick Vitale.
Sanders ends with discussing the importance of the election. “We need an election that energizes and excites the American people. This is not a moment to throw our hands in the air. We all know what we can become.”
