I went into an infrastructure meeting with a customer yesterday and decided to use @Ed_Milliband's logic for my server renewal project pitch. It went like this:- ME: So, I propose that we replace the current servers with new ones that will be more efficient and environmentally friendly. Customer: Sounds good, what's the catch? ME: Well, these new servers are VERY efficient but they only have 83% uptime. Customer: What's the uptime on our current servers? ME: 99.8% Customer: This is not sounding good so far... ME: Yes, but the new servers are VERY efficient and will tick all the right boxes. We can put a big announcement out about how environmentally friendly we are. Customer: Hmmm...ok...but what about the uptime only being 83%? ME: Well, we have ways to mitigate that. Customer: Excellent, how do we do that? ME: We keep the old servers on standby. Customer: Ah, so, we can do away with the disaster recovery servers? ME: No, we'll still need those too. Customer: Riiight.... ME: We'll also need to use some space on the servers of the company next door for, ummmmm, load-balancing. Customer: What!? ME: Well, we can't fire the old servers back up from standby immediately you see...so we'll use theirs instead. Customer: They'll be happy with that will they? ME: It'll be fine. We just have to pay them the going rate. Customer: Hold on, so now we need three sets of servers, we can't totally rely on the new ones, and Wainwrights nextdoor get to charge us money too? ME: Yes. Customer: Get the f*ck out of my office.
