We don’t pay ENOUGH for our clothes and if we want ethical production we have to expect to start paying more and buying less. Like, across the board. Or, shopping secondhand.
“The issue is not the devaluing of clothing, it’s devaluing the labor used to produce it.”
👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
When we demand $10 crop tops, we demand that human labor be devalued to below-subsistence levels. This hurts all of us, because as long as *some* labor is devalued, ALL labor is.
But your idea is so skewed of it all if you expect clothing new to cost £5-10 retail and consider £30 for a new item “overpriced”. That’s the way a lot of people think because fast fashion has kept prices extremely low through exploiting non white people in poorer countries.

. You can catalog your wardrobe on your own for free, or we can send an Archivist to your home to do all the hard work for you. Even better than Cher, you can then connect 1:1 with a professional stylist or resell with just a few clicks!
There is a fundamental misunderstanding that sustainable fashion = how the product is made when sustainable fashion is MUCH more about how a product is used.
The BLS Consumer Expenditures survey shows that we’ve been spending about the same amount on clothes (~$1700 per year, per household) since the mid-90s. The 90s!!!
It's actually bananas how clothing prices have stagnated and in many cases gone down. I'm looking at clothes from brands I bought in the early 2000s (going through stuff at my parent's house) and many of those brands are charging the exact same amount for clothes 20 years later.
Never in my life have I felt so disrespected as a human being. So THIS is what it feels like to have your fundamental rights taken away. The pain is palpable, but it is minuscule compared to all the pain and suffering this decision will cause for years and years to come.
So who else thinks it’s bullshit that lady bird WON best actress and best motion picture but its director Greta Gerwin was not even nominated 🙋♀️(spoiler alert a bunch of white dudes were nominated instead)
Can we talk about how much of an asshole Dumbledore is to Slytherin in Sorcerers Stone? He literally announces them winners of the house cup, Great Hall decorations and all and then he is just like lol no jk 10 points to Neville you loose

! Even better, the outfit recommendations are made by a real professional human stylist. If you’re in SF, NYC, or LA we will even come to your house and catalog your existing wardrobe for you to get started.
I hear a lot of puzzlement about the status of
#fashionsustainability
. We've become *so* much more aware of the issues, and so many people earnestly want to see change - so why was SHEIN the most popular fashion brand of 2022?
The truth? We still have the incentives all wrong.
Derek gets roasted for appearing “classist” or “out of touch”, but he is completely right. It doesn’t matter if we make the “sustainable” tee $20 if we’re going to continue to treat everything we own as disposable.
@antimaniac99
@yesfriendsbrand
i dont know how price can be excluded from how we understand sustainability. it's inherent in the issue. when the cost of repairing is >50% of the item's retail price, ppl choose not to repair. so when the first hole shows up, they toss and replace bc retail is so cheap
@nycsadgirl
Hi 👋🏻 , I built this
@IndyxApp
. If you’re too lazy, we’ll send someone to your house to take all the photos for you. AI isn’t there yet to make actual good outfits, but you can pay $15 a month for our professional human stylists to send you cute outfits, all from your own closet.
Here’s the Tip of the Day: many clothing companies have stealthily cut back on material, so order your stuff one size larger than you are. I am 6’4”, 210 pounds and an XL used to do it. Not anymore. Now XXL.
The fucking Roy Moore election party has the fucking NYT election needle projected on the stage. I thought they were fake news? I really cannot with these people.
@em_chan
My two cents: we can’t depend on the current dominant business model in fashion (brands & retailers) to solve this, because the model is fundamentally incentivized to keep selling more and more product…which makes absolute reduction nearly impossible.
I see folks clamoring to “make sustainable fashion less expensive”, implying that if we can somehow reduce production costs to make an $85 “sustainable” tee $20 then all our problems would be solved.
p.s. the correct esoteric physics metaphor to use with Rosenstein is the Heisenberg uncertainty principle, not Schrödinger's cat, insofar as the the reporting of the story has possibly affected the outcome.
@DLVermeer
You know we’re working on this! In the meantime, pulling the product images of whatever you buy into a digital wardrobe gets you 90% there in 30 seconds of effort. And of course,
@IndyxApp
can send an Archivist to your house to handle your existing wardrobe.
Constance Wu, Jennifer Lopez, Cardi B, Lili Reinhart, Keke Palmer, Julia Stiles, Mercedes Ruehl & Trace Lysette starring in a movie about a team of former strip club employees who band together to take down their Wall Street clients is EXTREMELY MY SHIT.
As of now, the narrative of the millennial generation is coming of age in a time when we thought everything was figured out only to see it torn apart piece-by-piece in front of us
I've said this before, but soooo many people just didn't grasp the stakes of 2016. Young people especially. They just kind of assumed that the Obama years were the baseline and that was no way we could bo backwards, progress-wise. That was comically wrong. The GOP never stops.

🙋🏼♀️ which task/functions can be reasonably grouped together under a smart generalist vs. which you should really have a specialist on from the beginning.
“Why doesn’t
@indyxapp
[or other digital wardrobe] just automatically pull in my purchases?” Trust me, we wish for that just as much as you do!
Here are some of the challenges we’re facing with it. In the meantime, save online image to camera roll -> add to wardrobe does a LOT.
@DLVermeer
@IndyxApp
Also, to share some challenges we’re facing with automatic scrapers (I feel you & your followers would care to deep dive!)
1. An email scraper requires integration with major providers, and at least with gmail this means big $$$s for annual security licensing/authentication
Men should take paternity leave because they should care for their children, and experience the love that grows out of caring for their children.
To miss that is to parent (and live) in grayscale, not color.
@DLVermeer
@IndyxApp
@indyapp
But, as you can imagine, that is a one-by-one game (with, hopefully eventually a flood). In the meantime, we’re focused on the Pro-Indyx service as a solution for getting great, true-to-life flatlays for all the things already in your closet.
Yeah so…today feels even more sickening. I am dreading that the decision will inevitably falls out of the news and our feeds and this just becomes the new ‘normal’. I haven’t felt normal since 2015.
This idea was deeply insidious. We fell asleep at the wheel for 50 years, and now we’ll have to spend another 50 years fighting just to get back to where we were.
I am unbelievably angry, but I am also ashamed that I didn’t fight back harder when we had the chance.
Ken Starr on NPR, claiming the Clintons are inherently dishonest, says he's written this book partly because he was "freed" of his duties at Baylor.
He resigned, under pressure, after being demoted as president, for covering up sexual assault at the school.
"Freed"😒
To see real change, we need wholly different business models - ones like
@indyxapp
that are incentivized from the bottom-up to slow consumption rather than speed it up.
This is where I wish there was a longitudinal study going back decades polling American women on "how much have you had it up to here?" Because I'd be very interested to see those numbers tomorrow.
But something like the Gustaf Westman plate? That is a SUPER specific, recognizable design from a small designer that’s getting blatantly knocked off and we all seem to just be….okay with it. We’ve lost our ability to even understand the difference.
Will the clinics in your area be able to handle the influx of women from the 13 states where abortion is now illegal today? (with almost certainly more to follow in the coming weeks and months)
Some people think they have the privilege to avoid Texas's abortion ban, i.e. to travel out of state if they need one.
But with an ectopic pregnancy, you will die unless you have surgery within hours. In Texas, you might not get that surgery.

3. This doesn’t address any of the stuff you *already* have. We hear this a lot: “oh now that I have
@indyapp
it it’s easy to pull in images of stuff as I buy it, but what about the 500 things already in my closet from years ago?”
It has been anesthetizing for liberals - especially wealthy white liberals - to believe that regardless of what happens with Roe, it won’t really matter for *them*. It’s the poor and uninformed who will no longer have a choice. I’ll still be able to get MY abortion.
This is simply insane.
Trust in the electoral process among Republicans has cratered from 68% before the election to 34% now.
The reason: Donald Trump can't accept that he lost.
This is the damage Trump is causing and almost every elected Republican is helping him do it.
Fashion brands exist to do one thing, and one thing only: sell product. Ideally *lots* of product. Yes, even the "sustainable" ones.
We can't escape the reality of their economics. And so, we also can't solely depend on them to be the change makers in sustainability.
Even if you are in a place in life where you don’t *plan* to have an abortion, do you realize how this may impact IVF or your care during what might be the most gut wrenching moments of a very much wished for pregnancy?
We also need regulation to force brands to take real financial accountability for their negative downstream impacts, which is why I'm happy to see the progress with California's Responsible Textile Recovery Act of 2023 (SB-707).
Elon Musk had twins last year with Shivon Zilis, one of his top executives. She has recently been floated as one of the people Musk could tap to run Twitter after his acquisition. Big scoop from

YES 👏🏻. This along with “safe, legal, and rare” is a self-defeating argument that makes me want to grind my teeth right out of my jaw. “Anytime I fucking want” isn’t just the morally right answer, it’s the only intellectually consistent one.
I really hate this need to justify abortion because of r*pe and incest. They’re obviously hugely valid and understandable reasons but “I simply don’t want to be a parent” is reason enough. Having autonomy over your own body is reason enough.
