📢 New essay.
Vinesh Phogat will not want to hear it right now, but she has accomplished something far greater than what a round, bulky piece of metal could’ve ever given her.
Read, share, subscribe, hydrate.
No, Gautam. Azhar wasn't captain "despite being a minority". He played cricket and captained the country to three World Cups on the merit of his ability. Sport doesn't see religion, you do.
Gautam Gambhir, BJP on Pakistani cricketer Danish Kaneria: This is the actual face of Pakistan, on the other side we have got people like Mohammad Azharuddin captaining India for such a long time, despite being a minority.
"Ben Stokes hasn't got runs, but he's been solid in his defence all series."
I don't know what Murali Kartik had for breakfast, but I want the same. Some good stuff from the Himalayas clearly going into the hotels.
Nope. Darren Sammy was called "Kalu". I was at the Ferozeshah Kotla when sections of the crowd called a South African cricketer "monkey".
This twisted sense of taking national pride whenever something goes wrong in another country is the worst kind of myopia.
Thirteen years back, on the same ground, against a far weaker bowling attack, a batting lineup of Jaffer, Dravid, Laxman, Tendulkar, Ganguly, Yuvraj and Dhoni couldn't bat out 75 overs. The Indian cricket team has come a long, long way in terms of grit.
This has blown up and many are suggesting Gambhir meant the same thing. The word minority, as demographically relevant as it is, is part of divisive lexicon. When a public figure uses it, you have to be tactful. Even if he meant well, 10000 better ways to express.
I have the greatest respect for you, Harsha, and it must've taken a lot of courage to write what you did. But look outside, and that word - Nazi (or fascist) - is exactly what's being used for our government. Justifiably so, too. The idea of India is in disarray right now.
No Dennis, my India isn't broken. It is full of vibrant young people doing amazing things too. We are a fully functional, mature democracy. We might voice our dissent, our disappointment at times but we are fiercely Indian. That word you used in comparison.....never.
Wrote 3000 words for
@Football_P
in honest praise of Bengaluru FC. I wholeheartedly believe they are the club that can turn around the fortunes of Indian football, and if you've seen their journey, they look well on their way.
A lifetime's worth of work. Mostly out of sight, away from camera. Just silent effort. Waking up with an aching body just to get faster by the measure of seconds.
Immersing it all into the Ganges because the ministry doesn't care. There, legitimately, cannot be anything sadder.
Sanjay Manjrekar is an unbelievably jarring commentator during a tight chase. For the love of god man, stay quiet for two seconds. You are not the story.
The

lit up yesterday as tribute to 26/11.
I'm a Bengali who was born into Mohun Bagan support, but hats off to

. Best run club the country has ever seen, and I dare say, the most balanced set of fans even.
Which accomplished batter has had the longest leanest run as he has walked into the sunset?
Warner certainly in with a shout for the top position, one would think
Oh yes. Jay Shetty and MeniscusMojito, the two leading experts in psychology, with a combined total of 0 IQ and EQ, discussing mental health with a thumbnail that implies a famous female singer is "hiding" mental issues.
Hashtag influencer, hashtag nofap, hashtag vibes.
Dinesh Karthik did not just say "the Lamborghini Urus is Rohit's car. He flies with it on the highway." Zero brakes on the mouth. Get him out of here, someone. Anyone.
It shouldn't, and indeed doesn't, matter what football club you've lent your heart to. It is irrelevant whether the herd mentality infused fandom demands you to curse every other team.
Liverpool and Jurgen Klopp are special and deserve every laurel that comes their way. End of.
@cricketcouch
But they didn't leave behind the seniors. Some of the seniors opted not to go because "tch, who plays T20?" Doubt any of the uncles opt out this time xD
It is easy to mock the Kohlis and Pants of this age because of their tattoos and gelled hair, but look at the team they have built. Ravi Shastri, so often derided, deserves generous praise too. This has been a stunning series by India so far.
@anishbhalerao
@devellix
This is the closest to "I'm not a racist, I have black friends" we're going to get.
The sheer cheek to suggest that Azhar was a made a captain "even though" he was a minority makes it seem like it was a point under consideration which gave him some weird ass edge over others.
How do you mourn when multiple fragments of your childhood, some of the strongest fragrances you can remember, evaporate into thin air? Does this ever get easier? Or do we eventually make peace with mortality and become indifferent?
It really shouldn't be that difficult to understand that playing cricket and broadcasting are two different professions. Being an all-time great at one doesn't give you the license to be an oaf at another.
22-year old Sunil Gavaskar on his debut series to the West Indies. His scores: 65, 67*, 116, 64*, 1, 117, 124, 220. A total of 774 at an average of 154.80.
Now every time you come down hard on him about saying something silly while commentating, just pause & think about this.
Covered Tu Bin Bataye. Man's in the news + heard a super inspiring vocal rendition of it, so thought what the heck! Some of Rahman's music feels like a cool breeze touching your face; this track is one such example.
It has been a tough, tough 24 hours. Here's my piece for
@Football_P
on Ronaldo and Man United.
When we celebrate Ronaldo, knowing the kind of evidence that exists against him, we show ourselves in rather dim light. We always have a choice to be better.
By the time India play Australia in a Test series again, it would be a decade since Australia won a
#BorderGavaskarTrophy
. This is an insane era of dominance by the Indian Test team.
I hope India don't play Pakistan in the final. I legitimately fear for the safety of some of our players if Pakistan end up winning. Give us anyone, get us a loss, all good. A bad result in an India vs Pakistan game brings out the absolute worst in us. No thanks.
The stands are empty. :) If there was ever an Indian team that deserved to have 100k people applauding them onto the dias, even if to receive silver medals, it was this. What a tragedy that they are followed by fair-weather muppets.
Every time I hear Roger Federer speak, I am reminded of something
@rohitdbrijnath
wrote about him.
"Federer is the face of tennis and yet wears his fame like a lightweight jacket."
New essay for
@Football_P
. I can't believe I had to write this. Sorry for intruding in the middle of a euphoric evening.
On Mason Greenwood, Harriet Robson, and a world designed to protect famous assaulters.
Alright, Twitter. Help! I am looking for freelance writing opportunities. Hopefully starting with the

SRT, Lara, Inzi, Smith, AB - all of them built their Test careers on leaving the good balls, but Matunga McCullum plays Starc as if he is playing a practice match at Azad Maidan.
I just heard that Iga Swiatek listens to Thunderstruck and Pearl Jam before her matches. Here to tell you that Serena, Steffi Graf, and Justin Henin can move over to make some space on the all-time favourite shelf.
If we do end up signing Ronaldo, I hope we lose every game he plays in. It is a crime that he is allowed to play the sport after the cases against him, never mind get transferred between big clubs with illustrious histories.
Pet peeve, but the sound on Sony Liv is absolutely horrendous. Camila Cabello's vocals sounds like a bootlegged recording from a Delhi University fest. Shambles.

Gavaskar retired before I was born, and Tendulkar was already Tendulkar by the time I started watching cricket.
This one I have a different equation with. I watched him as a club cricketer at Delhi's Roshannara ground. He looked a different league then.
That Ishant and Virat over was so good. Imagine playing together at a nondescript, gravelled ground in West Delhi, dreaming of big things, and then graduating to Delhi, India U-19, then India, and all these years later, overlapping as the finish line is in sight. Great stuff.
He was exceptional until that South Africa series of 2010-11. Scored an all-timer of a century against peak Dale Steyn. Had a wonderful World Cup.
And then, kaboom. Over. Laborious, difficult, almost sore to the eyes barring the occasional knock.
Bunch of people tagging him in the replies. There is a reason I didn't tag. Don't intend to turn this into a personal attack on his socials. FFS air your views all day, but don't scream into his ears.
You shouldn't touch 90% of these books in your 20s IMHO. There is enough amazing literature outside productivity/business porn and low-effort psychology. Read fiction, investigative non-fiction, or totally silly stuff. Just please don't read Jay Shetty when you're 21.
Seven years in Chennai today. Took this picture a few hours after we landed. Wild that the beach and sea-breeze have been my constants all this while, even through a pandemic.

Hi
@sanjaymanjrekar
. Quick request. There are always two people in the commentary box. Currently, there is Kumar Sangakkara, one of our generation's most astute minds, sitting next to you. Please let him talk/finish what he's trying to say.
Eleven years. What a night. Spent ~5 hours just high-fiving strangers at India Gate, drowning in beer froth, screaming Chake De/Rahman's Vande Mataram loudly.
I spent twenty years in Delhi, but I never saw India Gate light up like that. It was *the* night.
One of their greatest ever, Steve Waugh, was sacked from captaincy in 2002 and didn't get a spot at the 2003 WC even after being a good enough batter and defending title winner. That's how you create space for your Andrew Symonds when the time is right.
People keep asking why Australia keeps winning titles while India doesn’t. It’s because Cricket Australia isn’t obsessed with star-worshipping and doesn’t make decisions considering marketing value!
Vinesh Phogat, words don't suffice what you've just done. A book might, someday. Hopefully written by a writer who knows your struggle deeply. And one, hopefully written by you.
We'll forget about it, though. Next Women's Day, or after the Paris Olympics, when Indian athletes land medals, the govt will release campaigns and hashtags, promise the world.
And the same athletes will struggle to get a word with the Sports Minister when the camera is off.
Was on an early morning flight from Chennai to Delhi, reading Curtly Ambrose's autobiography. Window seat. Half sleepy, but drudging through the book. Suddenly I hear "Whadda bowler, tcha. Legend ra."
Guy with glasses and a french beard sits at the aisle seat. Krish Srikkanth.
And of course, tip of the hat to Ajinkya Rahane for his leadership. He has guided the ship when so many parts have developed glaring cracks, but the framework hasn't been allowed to fall apart.
One of the greatest privileges of my life was growing up in a household where religion was not confused with faith.
Grandmum was our Chief of Religious Matters. She ensured there was a cupboard in her room set aside for religious artefacts, miniature idols, posters etc.
Should've walked after Monty did him dirty in 2012, but that's easy to say for an armchair fan. Can understand why a champion athlete saw age/slowing reflexes as a challenge to conquer.
Imagine how secure and warm a dressing room has to be for two captains to speak like this about each other. Beyond all the skill and aggression, there isn't a setup more professional than Australian cricket.
In 2016, after moving to Chennai, I harboured two wishes. One was to play solo at the Museum Theatre and the other was to watch MS Dhoni live at Chepauk. CSK and Chepauk were undergoing some serious issues with BCCI at that time, so I didn't know how the latter would materialise
Compiling some notes from last night's match. Was struck by the poetry of the moment when the cameras panned to Shikhar Dhawan after Kishan reached his fifty.
