I am the artist who did most of the original Animorphs covers. I have an Etsy shop set up where you can buy signed (by me), numbered prints of the covers on acid free Epson Art Velvet paper. They come in a variety of sizes. Please check it out here:
I noticed a poster of mine being offered on eBay for over $50. You can buy it directly from me for less than half that. The print is 24 inches by 18 inches, on semi-gloss paper.
You can get one on Etsy here:
An Animophs fan bought some custom Animorphs prints with a single morph on them. She was good enough to send me photos of those prints in front of the Animorphs toys that came out. Thank you, Mag!!
You can buy prints of any of my Animorphs cover here:
A fan of the "Choose Your Own Adventure" books, Michael Reyes, contacted me to see if I had any of my covers left from the series. He got it beautifully framed, and sent me this wonderful picture with his daughter, Mika, looking at "Vampire Express."
I'm pleased to announce that the Hunter Museum on American Art in Chattanooga has purchased one of my paintings for display in their collection. I will have more on this once the details are finalized.
I was digging through my closet and found a cache of my 18x24 inch “Flying High” posters. I will send a signed, personalized print like the one I am holding to anyone who orders a 13x19 inch (or larger) print, or any piece of original art on any of my Etsy shops.
When I was 22 and just out of art school I did this cover for "The Commodores Greatest Hits". Those big vinyl record sleeves were sure a great place to show off artwork!
I am reunited with a painting I did 43 years ago. I bought it e-bay. How did it get on e-bay?
The seller bought it in an estate sale in TX. But what really hurts me is that I gave the painting to a friend over 40 years ago, yet I had to buy it back on e-bay.
As you may know, I teach at School of Visual Arts in New York, and at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn. With the school year starting, I'm offering a discount! via

I'm tweeting out some of my favorite covers. This one is called "Wizard World," and it is the only cover that features my father, John W. Mattingly. He is the big wizard on the left side of the painting. You can buy signed prints here:

I am selling my Animorphs style guide on Ebay!
If you are an Animorphs collector, I suspect this is one item you have never seen before, and may never see again.
My free signed ”Flying High” poster offer has been so successful that I need to bring it to an end. For the next 3 days only I will send a personalized print to anyone who orders a 13x19 inch (or larger) print, or any piece of original art on any of my Etsy shops, or my web site.
My father, John W. Mattingly, was the inventor of the Water Pik, and the sole name on the original patent. He always said the Water Pik was no replacement for flossing—you should do both. Here is a nice article in the NY Times about it.
I now have all of my Animorphs covers up on Etsy, even ones you've never seen before. I discovered I got my count wrong. I actually did 55 of them! Please check them out here:
I'm going to tweet out some of my favorite non-Animorphs, non-Honor Harrington covers. This is my favorite of all of my covers, called "Twilight of the Gods. You can order signed prints of it here:

I made this beautiful canvas print of my favorite painting, “Twilight of the Gods” but I printed it on the WRONG side of the canvas.
You can have it for free (as long as you are in the United States) if you are the first one who can tell me what neoclassical painting this honors.
Check out this wonderful video on the Elastic Reality software I used to create Scholastic's Animorphs covers from Clint Basinger:
The books were by K.A. Applegate, and designed by Karen Hudson.
Chris, Miranda + Eddy at the Anidorks podcast did this interview with me:
Thanks for being so interested in my work, and making me feel welcome.
You can get signed prints of all of my Animorphs covers here:
It was the great matte artist Peter Ellenshaw's 107th birthday yesterday. It was an honor to work with him at Disney studios. Here is a picture of him working on the opening shot of "Dick Tracy," with a much younger me right behind him
Joe Downey ordered prints of my artwork, got them beautifully framed, and sent me these photos of them hung in his home. Thank you, Joe!!
You can order prints of my artwork here:
Four more of my paintings are going up for auction. I have done over 2 dozen covers for David Weber, but all of them were digital, except for one, the cover for "Armageddon Inheritance," is an actual painting.

I often use friends and neighbors as models for my book covers, and I used my next door neighbor, Sheldon Teperman, as the model for the driver on my cover for David Weber's "Honor of the Queen." It just so happens Sheldon is a world famous trauma surgeon!!
One of the authors I have been privileged to do covers for, Simon Hawke, had my artwork tattooed on his body!! He was kind enough to share photos of two of them, along with the artwork that inspired them. Thanks, Simon!

I think this is from a press kit Scholastic did for the Animorphs books with a lenticular cover. I got one of them, and it has sat in my book shelf all these years. I didn't know any other copies existed!
I did some new Animorphs style artwork for designer Hillary Taymour of Colina Strata. Check out their innovative clothing line here: . I love their clothing, kind of Haight Ashbury meets Bridgerton!

cyclists for cars to park in the bike lane.
Right now their seems to be no enforcement of the bike lane at all. At least I have never seen a policeman make a car move. I would encourage the police the TICKET the cars, not make them move, and ticket them immediately

Ingres "Jupiter and Thetis" was the inspiration for this painting. Ingres copied himself for the pose of the central figure from his "Portrait of Napoleon".
Caryl Heard was the first person to guess this. Congratulations Caryl! I'll be getting the print to you.

In the early 1990's, I did the six covers for Edgar Rice Burroughs' "Pellucidar" series as a continuous strip so the books could be displayed side by side on the shelves. Here are all 6 covers as one like I originally envisioned them.
Marvel issued this omnibus volume of Conan stories, many by my idol John Buscema, with this cover I did in art school many years ago. The retail price is a hefty $125, but you can get it for $75.00 at .

It seems Midjourney has sucked up my style!! The weird thing is that is you type in “/imagine in the style of David Mattingly,” you get a result that looks NOTHING like my paintings.
I am honored to be the 298th subject of Walter Day's Science Fiction Historical Trading Cards, along with H.G. Wells and Robert Heinlein. There is a short interview with me on the web site for the card collection, and you can read it here:
On the advice of my good friend Paul Chadwick, I watched Roger Ebert's excellent commentary on Orson Well's masterpiece, "Citizen Kane." I thought I knew everything about that film, but I learned a lot!

Cathe and I just returned from 16 days in Poland and the Czech Republic. We spent 4 days in Gdansk, Warsaw, Krakow & Prague. The inspiration for the trip was to see Hans Memling’s “The Last Judgement” in Gdansk, one of my favorite paintings. Here are somephotos from the trip.
I'm selling a few of my paintings on Heritage Auctions over the coming months. The first is one of my Lensman paintings I did for Berkely Books many years ago. Please forward this link to any art lovers that might be interested.
The cover looks even better as a wrap with no type. You can see it here: Just type in "Steve Miller and Sharon Lee". And, or course, you can buy signed, numbered prints of any of their covers.

Chief Ferrante—
I was a supporter of protected bike lanes on Washington St, but when I saw we were getting clearly demarcated bike lanes, I hoped for the best. However, as I ride my bike down Washington St, I rarely encounter a block where at least one car in parked
