@PHChess It's like kicking the breadwinner out of your household.

@ChessWarri42621 @GMJacobAagaard @Najdorf250 The big difference being that in chess there are no "Fide clubs" that pay players salaries. It's far closer to boxing where organizations collect their fee if the fight is sanctioned by them. While the fighters can choose for which belts they fight.

@GMJacobAagaard Not really. Not a man who should reference his values and self-respect considering his employment history.

@TarjeiJS Demanding 500k is simply greedy in this case. As expected.

@RobertoRoig @ChessProblem Fide is not "our game". It's sports federation which has made some good and some bad decisions over many years. It could disappear today and 95% of chess world would not change. And that 5% would be replaced by the new similar organisation.

@MikuCapital @MikeFritzell @CasinoCapital Yep. Nintendo discount their own games like once a year by 10-20%. Games that have been out for years. Often games that have been re-released multiple times. Compare to Ubisoft which heavily discount their new AAA games months after launch.

@suzatweet @ada_lluch Could be even less. You can reasonably expect 5% real (inflation adjusted) return on investment. That's 500k on 10 million. You probably can have a very comfortable lifestyle in most places for half of that.

@chess_insights @PHChess It would make sense to compare with other major sports federations.

@PHChess Top professionals expect to get paid well. As you can see, Emil is hard at work even on Saturday! You can't measure such dedication with money.

@chesscom @chess24com Great cheeky line, but he did score -4 with no wins in 2007. :)

@PHChess Or could put that money into organizing Grand Prix or some other tournament as a candidates qualifier.

@GMJacobAagaard Really interesting how it all plays out over the next 5-10 years. Seems like Gukesh-Arjun-Abdusattorov-Pragg are still all more or less on the same level. Curious if one of them can find an extra level and dominate this generation or it will be closer to Anand-Kramnik-Topalov.

@GMJacobAagaard @PHChess Is it also common sense to suspend players for TWO cycles? It's not "you play for them, you don't play with us". It's "you play for them, we punish your disobedient ass for two cycles". Intended as punishment. Leverage.

@GMJacobAagaard @PHChess We do know that Fide is using the Classical cycle as leverage in negotiations. To put it politely.

@GMJacobAagaard @PHChess Then you should also conclude that it's not about competing cycles, undermining Fide and whatnot. It's simply Fide not getting their standard fat cut.

@MeerMaurits There have been a lot of father-son duos in the NBA. But height is so much influenced by genetics that it becomes a poor example. You definitely have inherited advantages if your father was an NBA player.

@GMJacobAagaard @PHChess Also, about the numbers game. F1 only started in 1950. Tournament chess is roughly 100 years older.
